Review of My Name is Barbara by Barbara Streisand

My Name is Barbra is a brick, a monumental tome clocking in at 966 pages. This work chronicles many things; it is an accounting of an extraordinary life by an extraordinary person. It is also the exemplar of absolutely everything that is wrong with autobiographies. One can presume that Viking gave the author carte blanche to write what she wanted as she wanted, with seemingly no editorial input. The book is first and foremost an extremely long love letter to voice-to-text. The author is clear at the beginning that she never learned to type, and the reader can easily hear her speaking into her phone . . . via all the ellipses. Thousands of ellipses. Such a book only exists because of the fame of its author, and perhaps this is the case with most autobiographies. Their authors are famous not because they are writers, but because of their singular art form. I would argue this is why editors exist—to spin into gold the raw material produced by the artist. No such luck here. Similar to other autobigraphies by performing artists, Streisand specializes in telling us the what and the who. What happened and who was there. What I sang is also part of this formula, but it’s almost second fiddle compared to what I wore, the real surprise and delight of this monograph</p

The Audacity of Hi-Fi: A Case for Lending LP Records

LPs are a format that were once headed for obscurity but have seen a remarkable resurgence in recent years. This study continues research published in 2018 on the circulation of LPs at the University of Colorado Boulder. This collection was moved off-site in 2015 and access to the collection was expanded to allow lending via interlibrary loan and via the local consortium, Prospector. Findings show a significant increase in use of the collection across multiple musical genres. In most cases, the University of Colorado Boulder was the sole owning library of the recordings that circulated. When additional copies existed, they often were not available to circulate. Additionally, newer formats of the recordings, where they existed, were often not available due to local use policies or restrictive streaming licenses. The author advocates for libraries to expand access to existing audio collections in order to help meet the needs of patrons.</p

The Importance of LPs in a Digital World

Long-playing records (LPs) were collected and maintained by libraries following the introduction of the format in 1948. While newer sound formats like compact discs and streaming audio have supplanted LPs in the market, they continue to have value to library patrons. The University of Colorado Boulder has an LP collection of nearly 22,000 items. In this study, I examine the 256 LPs that circulated in 2014, prior to moving the collection and expanding access to it. Using the consortial catalog Prospector, the primary mechanism for interlibrary loan in the region, I investigate how frequently the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries was the sole owning library of each record and I consider the availability of the audio content on a newer format. Overwhelmingly, I found that the University of Colorado Boulder Libraries was either the sole owner of the content, or licensing and lending restrictions prevented patrons from accessing the content on a newer format. I argue that hard format collections, like LP collections, bridge a gap between patron need and access to content. I also advocate for the expanded circulation of existing collections of LPs through interlibrary loan.</p

Preserving Cultural Heritage in Times of War

The Russian invasion in Ukraine February 24, 2022, activated a new expression of international community action and crowdsourcing. Saving Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Online (SUCHO) was launched by three digital humanities librarians to rescue data and back up digital objects belonging to cultural institutions in Ukraine. Its overwhelming success can serve as a model for librarians and activists responding to future conflicts. In this article, I explore the genesis of SUCHO and other large-impact data rescue projects. I examine the role of affinity and personal connection to this work, positioning the public response and rescue efforts to the war in Ukraine against the 2011 war in Syria and the 2023 war between Israel and Gaza. I advocate for structured data rescue teams within professional organizations as a counterbalance to the extreme role affinity has on the initiation and success of such projects.</p

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
