Conflicts, Borders and Nationalism: The Fiume Archive-Museum in Rome
The case study of the Fiume Museum-Archive set up by exiles in Rome helps reconsidering the role of museums to build cohesion and identity; the process of collecting in order to materialize the nation and cristallyze a center for the community; the construction of historical narratives on trauma, national belonging and contested heritage. It can also help reconsidering the issue of borders (geo-political; ethnic; linguistic;and disciplinary),anddiscussing the shifting between public history and the public use of history in the political arena
Representation and Regionalism: Moderna Museet and the Construction of a Narrative of Swedish Women Artists
Of phrenology, reconciliation and veneration: exhibiting the repatriated life cast of Māori Chief Takatahara at the Akaroa Museum
This chapter examines emerging practises of displaying contested indigenous artifacts at the Akaroa Museum on Banks Peninsula, New Zealand, considering values and belief systems of indigenous groups. Drawing on archival research, qualitative interviews with museum staff and visitors, the history of the museum and the object biography of a repatriated life cast of Māori chief Takatahara are depicted. The chapter shows how the repatriation of the life cast prompted a slow change in displaying indigenous artifacts from an ethnographical mode of display perpetuating the colonial gaze to a collaborative model, that acknowledges and reflects Māori believe systems and expectations
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

This article traces the destiny of the decorative elements that made up the so-called Salon Louis XV, ordered by the king of France for the conservation of his numismatic collections which up until 1741 had been housed in Versailles. Designed by the architect of the Bibliothèque du roi, Jules Robert de Cotte, it was richly furnished and decorated with paintings by François Boucher, Carle Vanloo and Charles Natoire. Situated above the arcade of the rue Colbert that was destroyed during the reconstruction undertaken by Henri Labrouste at the Bibliothèque nationale in 1865, the decors were put into storage. It will look at the changes in taste and the restauration effort that lead the administration of the Library and its architecte, Labrouste’s successeur, Jean-Louis Pascal (1837-1920) to reconstitute it in the new wing of the Library in 1904. It is still today the work place of the curators of antiquities of the Cabinet des médailles.
The five ivory masks of the Queen Mother Idia (16th century), which are now in London, New York, Seattle, Stuttgart, and in an English private collection, are without doubt the most iconic art objects from the African continent if we are to judge by illustrations in reference works. However, the vicissitudes of these objects, looted from the kingdom of Benin, then sold by British naval forces in 1897, lead us to observe two somewhat contrary movements in the history of this multiple: on the one hand, that of a market-driven global dispersion of a group initially conceived to function together locally and, on the other, the rediscovery of their status as an ensemble or multiple, and as what Alfred Gell has called the person-object disseminated through their (re)identification with Iyoba Idia starting in the 1950s. We will see how, from that moment on, these two movements become intertwined and subject to increasing tension. Across the Past and Present of Engaging with Colonial Contexts in the Arts and in Cultural Institutions
Over the summer of 2020, as statues were tagged and fell across North America and Europe, the question of how to deal with colonial legacy saturated media coverage, it became clear that we are as yet analytically ill-equipped to deal with the issues being brought up by different forms of public activism: the representations of and reparations requested in relation to the history of slavery, extractive colonial economics and the ideological constructions of racism. It is not the role of this r..
