This paper focuses on the interrelated meanings of the expression litterae communes as attested in different types of sources. One group of texts includes a law issued by the emperors Valentinian and Valens and one of the Justinian’s novels; here litterae communes is employed to refer to the minuscule writing system of the new Roman cursive, which was widespread in documentary practices outside the imperial chancery and, more generally, in current uses from the 4th century onwards. Another type of sources comprises pedagogical-grammatical texts from Late Antiquity to early Middle Ages, where the expression litterae communes relates to the rudimenta litterarum that could be learnt through primary education. The convergence point between these seemingly different meanings lies in the letterforms used for teaching/learning writing, as revealed by the comparison between the graphic models at the basis of elementary writings and the scripts employed for pragmatic purposes from Late Antiquity to Precarolingian Age
A spectroscopic study of anatase properties. 4. The adsorption of carbon dioxide
CO2 chemisorption at ambient temp. on a via-chloride anatase prepn. was investigated by microgravimetry and IR spectroscopy. Besides a CO2 species linearly held at surface acidic sites, different types of carbonate-like species were formed, revealing the existence of surface basic sites. The nature of surface carbonates varied on varying the sample activation temp. The overall chemisorbed amt. was quite small, indicating that very little surface basicity can be evidenced by a soft acid like CO2. The activity of surface oxygens depends strongly on the hydration degree, as well as on the preadsorption of polar mols., indicating that anatase surface basicity is influenced by the overall polarity of the surface layer
Sulla onciale cosiddetta “africana”
The paper focuses on the so-called “African uncial”, which is considered as a particular “type” of uncial used in the Roman province of Africa during 4th-5th century. First of all, the research shows the fragility of the textual arguments on which the African hypothesis is based. Secondly, it proves that the graphic features attributed to the African uncial are not so strongly – and not exclusively – present in supposedly African manuscripts: they probably depends on a “graphic taste” that does not – or not only – belong to a specific area. Finally, the evidences open up new perspectives on the variety and synchronicity of graphic trends in the uncial “old style”
The so-called Codex Seguierianus (Par. lat. 10592) is a late antique witness of Cyprian’s writings, which took different facies during its lifetime. By means of an integrated analysis of its graphic, bibliological and textual features and the meticulous observation of codicological peculiarities (signatures, marginalia and restorations), this paper attempts to reconstruct the manuscript’s stratigraphy and to retrace, backward in time, the book’s biography. In this way, this research reveals that the codex has turned into “various books” over time and it was born as “books in the book”, because of its complex genesis
