Towards an integrated approach to industry dynamics and labour mobility
No full textIndustrial dynamics and labour mobility are two fields of economic research that have developed fast in recent years, but along what are essentially separate lines. This paper shows that the processes those two fields deal with can be highly interdependent, and demonstrates the usefulness of (and the opportunity for) an integrated approach to the dynamics of industries and labour mobility. It concludes with a list of questions that inform a research agenda dedicated to such approach.
Big Browser Manning the Thin Blue Line:Computational Legal Theory Meets Law Enforcement
No full textThis paper analyses some current jurisprudential and conceptual issues in evidence and procedure from the perspective of a computational legal theory. It introduces a specific investigative device, Trojans operated by police during crime investigation, and analyses whether current formal approaches to legal reasoning can be modified in such a way that the software code underlying this device can represent the relevant legal constraints that should govern its operation. We will argue that traditional formalist theories of legal reasoning are typically restricted to reasoning within a system, and incapable therefore of making the notion of 'legal system' sufficiently explicit. We discuss possibilities to expand on these approaches and identify the necessary elements of a computational theory of legal reasoning in an age of porous borders
Effects of target firm's inventory turnover on post-merger and acquisition performance
No full textFirms use merger and acquisition (M&A) as a strategic tool to restructure their business. We explore the factors that determine the success of M&A in manufacturing. The literature has highlighted financial variables as success factors. However the literatures have not considered how operational factors of target firm have effects on the post-M&A performance of the buyer firm. Thus, we hypothesise that operational factors of the target firm also affect the M&A performance. In particular, we look into three different types of inventory, i.e., raw material, work-in-process, and finished goods, simultaneously. Then, we put forth that the turnover of the target firm's work-in-process inventory, which directly reflects its operational efficiency, is the most important factor. Thus, we conclude that in addition to financial factors, the target firm's operational efficiency determines the M&A performance. We elaborate on the analysis results and discuss economic as well as managerial implications. © 2018 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
