Quantum detector tomography of a time-multiplexed superconducting nanowire single-photon detector at telecom wavelengths

No full text
Superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) are widely used in telecom wavelength optical quantum information science applications. Quantum detector tomography allows the positive-operator-valued measure (POVM) of a single-photon detector to be determined. We use an all-fiber telecom wavelength detector tomography test bed to measure detector characteristics with respect to photon flux and polarization, and hence determine the POVM. We study the SNSPD both as a binary detector and in an 8-bin, fiber based, Time-Multiplexed (TM) configuration at repetition rates up to 4 MHz. The corresponding POVMs provide an accurate picture of the photon number resolving capability of the TM-SNSPD

Water-Rock Interaction Problems When Storing And Distributing Hot Water In Unlined Rock Tunnels And Caverns

No full text
The storage and transport of water-borne heat directly in rock caverns and tunnels is today a relatively untested technique which is judged to offer economic and technical advantages when applied on a large scale. The storage of hot water however, causes a change in the chemical composition of the storage water and gives weathering products on the exposed minerals of the cavern wall. These exolution and weathering processes are very complex and it is at present necessary to determine the ion exolution rate for each rock type at a certain specific water quality

How did Sweden Manage the European Union? ZEI Discussion Papers: 2001, C 96

No full text
[Introduction]. From a Swedish perspective the Swedish Presidency during the spring of 2001 was the single most important European event since the accession in 1995. It has even been argued that for the first time since the Vienna conference 1814-1815 Sweden could act on equal terms with the more powerful nations in determining European security policy (Wahlbäck, 2000, p 1). This raises several questions: (1) Does the presidency, as such, carry any weight? (2) Could a small member state, like Sweden, manage the EU as well as a large one like Germany or Great Britain? Is it possible that small is more efficient? (3) Did Sweden, in the role of the Presidency, influence the policies of the European Union? (4) To what extent can a reluctant and neutral nation like Sweden manage the Common Foreign and Security Policy area despite its non-NATO membership? What about the EMU? (5) What were the national and international reactions

Black-and-white photograph of a portrait of a First Nations Cree woman with her hair in braids and a scarf or hood draped around her head. Handwritten on verso: "Indian woman and child. My portrait of Cree Woman in 1956 at Fort La Ronge Saskatchewan." Based on the title given to the portrait by the author, the object that is on the woman's back and is partially shown in the picture could be that of a cradleboard

A study into one metaphor

The paper reviews Barbara Kaszkowska-Wandor’s book Res publica (post) literaria. Od poetyki wspólnoty do postliteratury. The study into the etymology of the metaphor of the “literary republic” leads the author to consider fundamental questions concerning the role of literature in shaping communities and the ways in which literature impacts political reality. The author’s erudition and bold methodological solutions allow her to answer those questions – often old and considered to be unanswerable – in an original, unobvious way

“Eagle? It is not half-turtle, half-thunder”. The problem of romantic irony in Vade-mecum

No full text
Numerous studies on the works composing the volume Vade-mecum confirm that although the individual poems are characterised by great ethical sensitivity and strong moral rigour, it is difficult to clearly define the worldview of Norwid’s work. The author of the article proposes an interpretation of Vade-mecum, taking into account the problem of Romantic irony. The poet uses irony as a tool to reach the elusive Truth. For him, ironic distance is not distancing himself from the views professed in particular works, but an awareness of the imperfections of a language which may falsify those views. Irony helps him in his quest to “give the right word to the thing”, not allowing the language to simplify or reduce the moral statements expressed in individual works

Kartezjusz — Lyotard — Dukaj. „Perfekcyjna niedoskonałość” jako propozycja oświecenia po uznaniu końca paradygmatu wielkich narracji

The paper explores the philosophical statements emerging from the plot of Jacek Dukaj’s science-fiction novel Perfekcyjna niedoskonałość [The Perfect Imperfection]. The argument of the article states that the Polish novel proposes a complete philosophical model of possible ways of imagining the future which is unique, yet fully coherent with the Enlightenment paradigm. After recapitulating the most important arguments of the mid-century’s discussion about the end of the grand narratives and brief recall of most canonical texts of the period of the Enlightenment, the author analyses ontological presuppositions hidden after the structure of the fictional world created by Dukaj. The novel appears to fully acknowledge the Cartesian dualistic model of the human being (which strongly separates its biological and mental roots) and sets plots in times when all biological limitations have been transgressed. Despite that, both optimistic scenarios of eighteenth-century utopians and catastrophic visions of twentieth-century sci-fi authors have never been fulfilled and the fictional world of the twenty-ninth century appears to be just the same as ours in its core, despite being totally different in terms of its phenomenological appearance. The paper explores the philosophical statements emerging from the plot of Jacek Dukaj’s science-fiction novel Perfekcyjna niedoskonałość [The Perfect Imperfection].
