'A date with Barbara': paracosms of the self in biographies of Barbara Newhall Follett
In 1927, 13-year-old Barbara Newhall Follett published her first book, the critically acclaimed novel, The House Without Windows and Eepersip's Life There.
Twelve years later, on December 7, 1939, 25-year-old Barbara quarrelled with her husband and left her apartment in Boston with $30 in her pocket, and a notebook. She was never seen again.
The House Without Windows is set in a paracosm (Farksolia) she invented, and ends with the metamorphosis of the titular character into a 'fairy-a wood nymph … invisible for ever to all mortals, save those few who have minds to believe, eyes to see'.
In Barbara's (auto)biography, The Unconscious Autobiography of a Child Genius (1966), written by Harold Grier McCurdy 'in collaboration with Helen Follett' (Barbara's mother), the authors wonder: 'Can we be far wrong in substituting Barbara's name for Eepersip's in the closing scenes of [House Without Windows]?
In this paper, I grapple with the formal and ethical challenges of writing about Barbara Newhall Follett, and the ways her family and others have approached the problem of writing her unresolved life story: a child raised and educated in solitude, a celebrated 'natural' child author, a young woman whose disappearance remains unsolved. The paper will explore the ways in which adults write the stories of children's lives, as nostalgia and fable, as fairytale and paracosmic narrative, and the ways in which Barbara's biographers have, consciously and unconsciously, created biographical concordances, or paracosms of the self, in seeking to make meaning of her life's story

In 1960 she arrived in Darwin working in a variety of occupations such as a journalist, historian, author, activist, advocate and editor. Barbara wrote 13 books including "No Man's Land" which explored the contributions of women in the Northern Territory. Characterization of gas condensate reservoirs using pressure transient and production data - Santa Barbara Field, Monagas, Venezuela

Please report any quality issues you encounter to [email protected], referencing the URI of the item.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 76-77).Issued also on microfiche from Lange Micrographics.This thesis presents a field case history of the integrated analysis and interpretation developed using all of the available petrophysical, production, and well test data from the condensate zone of Block A, Santa Barbara Field (Monagas, Venezuela). The reservoir units in Santa Barbara Field present substantial structural and fluid complexity, which, in turn, presents broad challenges for assessment and optimization of well performance behavior. Approximately 60 well tests have been performed in the gas condensate sections within Santa Barbara Field, and the analysis and interpretation of this data suggests the existence of condensate banking and layered reservoir behavior, as well as "well interference" effects. We demonstrate and discuss analysis and interpretation techniques that can be utilized for wells that exhibit condensate banking, layered reservoir behavior, and well interference effects (where all of these phenomena are observed in the well performance data taken from Block A in Santa Barbara Field). We have established that the layered reservoir model (no crossflow), coupled with the model for a two-zone radial composite reservoir, is an appropriate reservoir model for the analysis and interpretation of well performance data (i.e., well test and production data) taken from wells in Santa Barbara Field. It is of particular importance to note our success in using the "well interference" approach to analyze and interpret well test data taken from several wells in Santa Barbara Field. While it is premature to make broad conclusions, it can be noted that well interference effects (interference between production wells) could be (and probably is) a major influence on the production performance of Santa Barbara Field. In addition, our well test analysis approach corroborates the use of the Correa and Ramey (variable rate) plotting function for the analysis of drillstem test (DST) data. In summary, we are able to use our integrated analysis developed for Block A (Santa Barbara Field) estimate areal distributions of "flow" properties (porosity, effective permeability, and skin factor), as well as "volumetric" properties (original gas-in-place, gas reserves, and reservoir drainage area (all on a "per-well" basis))
Experiential Simulation for Urban Design: From Design Thinking to Final Presentation
The chapter presents the research outcomes developed by the author on the topic of environmental urban design and simulation, carried out at the Urban Simulation Laboratory ‘Fausto Curti’ at Polytechnic of Milan, Department of Architecture and Urban Studies. In particular, the author focuses the attention on the experiential approach: she proposes an urban design method that make use of multi-sensory simulation and that addresses the human-environment relationship. The author firstly traces the origins of the research laboratories dealing with environmental urban design and simulation; given this research context, she then presents an overview of the central characteristics of reliable experiential simulation. Following, she proposes a design method based on recursive key phases and a mixed used of different kinds of representations. In the conclusion she synthetically sums up the relevant issues addressed in the text

Partial Equalization for MC–CDMA Systems in Non-Ideally Estimated Correlated Fading
Multicarrier code-division multiple access (MC–CDMA) can support high data rates in next-generation multiuser wireless communication systems. Partial equalization (PE) is a low-complexity technique for combining the signals of subcarriers to improve the achievable performance of MC–CDMA systems in terms of their bit error probability (BEP) and bit error outage (BEO) in comparison with maximal ratio combining, orthogonality restoring combining, and equal-gain combining techniques. We analyze the performance of the multiuser MC–CDMA downlink and derive the optimal PE parameter expression, which minimizes the BEP. Realistic imperfect channel estimation and frequency-domain (FD) block-fading channels are considered. More explicitly, the analytical expression of the optimum PE parameter is derived as a function of the number of subcarriers, number of active users (i.e., the system load), mean signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and variance of the channel-estimation errors for the aforementioned FD block-fading channel. We show that the choice of the optimal PE technique significantly increases the achievable system load for the given target BEP and BEO
