Caeli Blake Interview
Caeli Blake (Class of 2021) was interviewed by Valeria Reynosa in the Oral History Studio at Fondren Library at Southern Methodist University on March 3, 2022. Although she was born in Woodbridge, Virginia, Blake calls Fort Washington, Maryland, her home. Her most memorable experiences during childhood include her time at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington D.C., a performing arts institution. She enjoyed being able to perform throughout her early school career, especially living in the DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) region. Because she wanted to attend a university with a recognized dance program, Blake decided to go to SMU. Ms. Blake remembered hearing about the school when she came to perform for the International Association of Blacks in Dance in Dallas, Texas. While at SMU, Ms. Blake became involved in organizations like the Association of Black Students in the school and the B. Moore Dance organization in Dallas. In her interview, she described how the dance program lacked racial and ethnic diversity. However, the university selected Silas Farley to teach ballet as a Visiting-Artist in Residence in Ballet. Ms. Blake enjoyed being able to learn methods in dance from a Black teacher, the first Black educator she learned from throughout her academic journey. At the time of the interview, Ms. Blake had accepted a job offer to perform professionally outside of Texas
Automation of Caeli: A High Performance Raman Lidar
Caeli is the CESARWater Vapour, Aerosol and Cloud Lidar and is a multiwavelength, high-performance Raman lidar which is stationed at the Cabauw Experimental Site for Atmospheric Research (CESAR) in the Netherlands. The instrument was developed as a key instrument for CESAR to strengthen the sites capabilities as a vertical profiling station. It was designed to withstand operations running 24=7. It is highly equipped with different sensors and monitoring units to keep a check on the health and status of the lidar instrument. Since its deployment at the CESAR, the instrument has been run by an operator, which is very time consuming. The operator has to follow a certain start-up sequence to to initialize the instrument, and then has to wait for atleast 2–3 hrs to perform the measurements. Also, despite having such a unique hardware setup, there is no medium to keep an eye on the system’s health. Manual operation limits the usage of the instrument; currently the measurements are performed mostly twice a week, that too depending on the weather conditions. Now, to reduce the dependence of operation of Caeli on an operator, and to improve the effciency and the smartness of the instrument to predict and analyze different situations, it needs to be fully automated. This thesis provides an integrated solution so as to automate the Raman lidar in such a way that it can be operated from a remote location through a secured link. All the sub-systems have been linked to a single user interface giving an easier access to the user to run the instrument even while sitting home. Programming techniques like producer/consumer, client server architecture, object-oriented programming have been used to develop the interface for the instrument. Different algorithms have been designed to build an interactive application for the user to operate the instrument. Constant notifications and updates keep the user informed about the health and status of the instrument. It also talks about the open points that needs needs to be worked on, and gives a brief discussion on how the instrument can reach upto a full automation stage.Mechanical, Maritime and Materials EngineeringDelft Center for Systems and Contro
Inspiracja pieśnią roratnią Rorate caeli desuper w Koncercie na altówkę i orkiestrę smyczkową
The author describes the inspiration for and background to the creation of the Concerto for viola and string orchestra. It elaborates the sphere of the composer’s inspiration: the religious period of Advent (rorate mass and its song Rorate caeli desuper) with the accompanying reflection on the symbolism of luminosity and darkness. The basic idea of sound in the concerto for viola and string orchestra was inspired by a musical quotation from the initial motif of the rorate song Rorate caeli desuper. The opening tunes of the song became the foundation for the development and shaping of the sound material in the subsequent movements of the viola concerto. The musical architecture and dramatic content of the entire piece rests on the aforementioned quote, which integrates the particular movements in accordance with the concept of unity in diversity understood as coherent input sound material whose narration is enriched by being presented in various sound contexts. Autorka opisuje inspirację i tło powstania Koncertu na altówkę i orkiestrę smyczkową. Nakreśla tło bezpośredniej inspiracji powstania utworu: religijny okres Adwentu (msza roratnia oraz pieśń Rorate caeli desuper) wraz z towarzyszącą mu symboliką światła i mroku.

Texts and illustrations in Venice, Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, ms. Lat. VIII 22 (2760). The Carolingian star catalogue De signis caeli and its ancient models
The article deals with the images of constellations depicted in the manuscript Lat. VIII 22 (2760) of the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice, produced probably in an Anglo-Norman milieu in the last quarter of the 12th century. After a short introduction on the manuscript and the texts it contains, the paper focuses on the illustrations of the Carolingian star catalogue known as De signis caeli, examining their different iconographic traditions as attested in the surviving copies. While the images in the main recension of the star catalogue clearly derive from a late antique archetype (probably the same that was used also for the so-called Aratus Latinus), the Venetian copy belongs to a group of manuscripts with a very different set of illustrations. The author proposes that this second recension is a Carolingian creation, invented between the late 8th and the early 9th century through contamination with the iconographic tradition of Germanicus’ Aratea. In this group of manuscripts, the original late antique set of illustrations was replaced by a new one, in order to give the star catalogue more consistency and to obtain a more effective tool for the study of the constellations
Intergenerational gender preferences in romantic partner selection: An Indonesian perspective [Author Accepted Manuscript]
Trends in the transition of gender role expectations that have occurred in the last few decades have slowly shifted the views regarding the characteristics that are deemed important in a romantic partner. Both evolutionary and contemporary perspectives are considered in the effort to better understand changes in these shifts. This study aims to explore these shifts by comparing data from two generations based on the year of marriage. Using a cross-sectional design, 279 Indonesian heterosexual married adults (Mage = 39.95; SD = 10.23) completed Buss’ (2013) Mate Preferences Questionnaire. Participants were grouped by the year of marriage: the senior group (n = 96; married before 2000) and the younger group (n = 163; married after 2000). Their responses were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA. The study results show that based on sex differences, there were no significant differences between the senior group and the younger group in romantic partner preferences. However, when considering the time of marriage, participants in the younger group prioritised certain criteria more strongly than those in the senior group. These included maintaining order, being ambitious, and having good prospects in terms of intelligence and finances. The interaction between gender differences and marital duration showed significant differences in theimportance of similar education levels as well as good education and intelligence. The study highlights the impact of evolving gender role expectations on the process of selecting romantic partners.reviewedacceptedVersio
Short stories from Caeli
As a form of sequential art, comics can have various roles. They can serve to provide and extend on instructions, education, serve as entertainment, etc. Through comics, the author has the ability to tell a story, show a character’s emotional state and their interactions with others in a way that’s similar to a film. Through history, film and comics have significantly influenced one another. This paper contains a brief theory about comics, however, it mostly refers to the creation process of the original comic. The work describes the process from the beginning of the concept on which the comic was based, the development of the characters and stories, as well as the detailed process of the technical production of the comic (from sketches to the final product)

Jan Kochanowski’s Psalter : a source of Polish poetry and mirror of the human mind
The article deals with Jan Kochanowski’s Psałterz Dawidów [David’s Psalter], published in 1579. This paraphrase of the biblical Psalter, intensely lyrical in its spirit, was inspired by George Buchanan’s Latin poetic paraphrase of the Psalms, which is strongly Horatianising. Kochanowski’s work can be seen as a presentation of humanist piety. That is to say that the borders between secular and sacred spaces, or even between Judeo-Christian and Pagan traditions, may seem blurred. The Psalter is also interconfessional (or "doctrinally neutral") and acts as a universal mirror reflecting the human mind. The author analyses three of Kochanowski’s Psalms to demonstrate the intellectual and emotional space of his Psalter and its polyphonic structure: 1 (Beatus vir qui non abiit in consilio impiorum), 19 (Caeli enarrant gloriam Dei) and 91 (Qui habitat in adiutorio Altissimi), displaying some interplays of ideas and different approaches to paraphrasing applied by the poet
