Subsurface imaging using a 2D structural cooperative inversion approach of multi-method geophysical data : theoretical formulation, numerical and experimental applications to electrical and seismic data

Understanding geology from geophysical investigation is better when information is obtained from different kinds of data. A single method may not have sufficient resolution to provide the expected information. Joint inversion is a step forward to quantitatively combine data of different nature. Joint inversion may be considered in two different ways, petrophysical or structural. We may subdivide a joint inversion into two categories, joint inversion of data function of the same physical parameter, and cooperative inversion of data of different nature such as electrical and seismic data. In this work, we propose to combine a zonal cooperative inversion scheme with a Gauss-Newton method for minimizing the cost function. The basic idea of zonal cooperative inversion is to use cooperatively fuzzy c-means (FCM) classe analysis and separate inversion algorithm. For each iteration classe analysis of separate inversion results is used to construct models composed by several classes that contain the parameter characteristics of dominant subsurface structures. These constructed models are then used in the expression of the model space a priori covariance term in a new stage of separate inversion. The resulting models are then possibly biased to a priori models which depend on the number of classes. To overcome this problem, we formulate the inverse problem using a regularization parameter selected by an adapted L-curve method to weigh the impact of the a priori model on the solution when geology cannot be described by segmented models. The advantage of such a formulation is to avoid undesirable bias towards the starting model and leads to significantly improved spatial resolution for consistent prior information. Hence, the choice of the number of classe to create the a priori model is although less important. The developed methodology is tested and validated on two synthetic models. An experimental application is performed on real data acquired as part of a research survey of the National Agency for Radioactive Waste Management (Andra) for the characterization of a site of interest. Given the results of this application, the use of a cooperative approach for the inversion of electrical and seismic data allows the reconstruction of a more robust geological model, consistent with all the data. The variations of the parameters with depth are more precisely described using this approach

Study of seismic observables in surface waves for the detection and characterization of underground cavities : a numerical and experimental approach

Many underground collapses are due to the presence of natural and anthropogenic cavities in the subsurface. The detection and characterization of this kind of cavity remain a challenge for geophysical methods, due to the complexity of subsurface media. To address this need, we suggest a method based on active seismic measurements to study the influence of a cavity on surface Rayleigh waves. So far, the different methodologies proposed in the literature are not able to precisely assess the cavity parameters, because the interactions between the void and Rayleigh waves are poorly identified and not taken into account. In this context, we define new seismic observables bearing information, with the aim of suggesting a new underground cavity imaging method suitable for subsurface environments. Our approach combines numerical modelling and reduced scale experimentations. The analysis of seismic recordings and associated phenomena lead us to define robust observables, especially based on the consideration of the horizontal component. Their sensibility is studied as functions of the cavity parameters, such as its diameter or its depth regarding the propagated wavelength. Our results demonstrate the significance of the horizontal component, which is highly sensitive to the presence of an object such as a cavity. Indeed, the analysis of the particular displacement ellipticity through H/V spectral ratios reveals strong perturbations in the vicinity of the heterogeneity caused by a void. In addition, several field data have been carried out and in the aim to initiate feasibility tests in real media

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Karst investigations using microgravity and MASW; Application to Orléans, France

International audienceAn integrated geophysical approach to detecting and characterizing karst structures in an urban environment was applied experimentally to partially explored karst conduits located in Orléans, France. Microgravity was performed to detect voids, in conjunction with multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) for the purpose of identifying areas of mechanical weakness.Microgravity detected negative anomalies corresponding to known conduits and succeeded in identifying the probable extensions of this network in unexplored areas. Control boreholes located on these extensions encountered several levels of water‐saturated voids, probably belonging to the shallowest part of the karst system, overlying the main conduits. Buried urban networks, accurately located by ground‐penetrating radar (GPR), were shown to have no significant gravity effect. Simulations using the compact inversion approach to characterize the size and density of environmental disturbances confirmed this conclusion. In this context, the gravity method has been shown to be suitable for detecting near‐surface (<25 m deep) karst features. The MASW method, which analyses Rayleigh‐wave propagation, can determine the mechanical behaviour of superficial formations and serve as an indicator for subsurface heterogeneities such as voids or fractures. At the Orléans site, MASW provided evidence of perturbed zones superimposed on gravity anomalies, characterized by the appearance of several dispersion modes, velocity inversions and the attenuation of seismic markers. One of these features was characterized by low velocities and was interpreted as an area of mechanical weakness, confirmed by pressure measurements in the boreholes.Repeated gravity measurements, or time‐lapse microgravity, were conducted on the anomalous areas to ascertain gravity reproducibility and detect possible temporal variations due to subsurface mass redistribution that may indicate site instability. A two‐year experiment revealed low‐amplitude gravity changes that were recorded in the two sensitive zones. However, their significance is still unclear and these changes need to be validated by further repeat experiments

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Imaging a near-surface feature using cross-correlation analysis of multi-channel surface wave data

International audienceIn this study, we demonstrate that cross-correlation gathers of multi-channel and multi-shot configurations provide accurate estimations of shear wave velocity (Vs) perturbations from Rayleigh wave data for the reconstruction of two-dimensional (2D), high-resolution velocity distributions without requiring the systematic calculation of surface wave dispersion, as in the spectral analysis of surface waves (SASW). Data acquisition for cross-correlation analysis is similar to that for a 2D seismic common midpoint reflection survey. The data processing involved is similar to the coda wave interferometry used for seismological data but differs in the sense that the cross-correlation of the original waveform is calculated for active source seismic data. Data processing in cross-correlation analysis consists of the following three steps: First, cross-correlations are calculated for every trace in each shot gather with the same offset trace as a reference shot to flatten the linearly sloping events of surface waves. A common receiver location stack section can then be obtained, which allows for the assessment of lateral variations in the elastic properties of the medium. Second, the maxima of the time-shifted cross-correlation gathers and the maxima of the shot gathers' envelope traces are picked for different frequencies, and trace values having the same receiver location are averaged to calculate Vs perturbations, as described in the theory of coda wave interferometry. Finally, a 2D Vs profile is reconstructed by applying the lateral Vs perturbation to a homogeneous Vs velocity profile obtained by inversion of the surface wave dispersion of the reference shot gather. Analyses of waveform data from numerical modelling and field observations indicate that this new method is valid and greatly improves the accuracy and resolution of near-surface imagery using surface waves and reconstructed subsurface velocity distributions compared with a conventional SASW or multi-channel application

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
