Dirac quantum cellular automaton in one dimension: Zitterbewegung and scattering from potential
We study the dynamical behavior of a quantum cellular automaton which reproduces the Dirac dynamics in the limit of small wave vectors and masses. We present analytical evaluations along with computer simulations, showing that the automaton exhibits typical Dirac dynamical features, such as the Zitterbewegung and, considering the scattering from potential, the so-called Klein paradox. The motivation is to show concretely how pure processing of quantum information can lead to particle mechanics as an emergent feature, an issue that has been the focus of solid-state, optical, and atomic-physics quantum simulators
Quantum field as a quantum cellular automaton: The Dirac free evolution in one dimension
We present a quantum cellular automaton model in one space-dimension which has the Dirac equation as emergent. This model, a discrete-time and causal unitary evolution of a lattice of quantum systems, is derived from the assumptions of homogeneity, parity and time-reversal invariance.
The comparison between the automaton and the Dirac evolutions is rigorously set as a discrimination problem between unitary channels. We derive an exact lower bound for the probability of error in the discrimination as an explicit function of the mass, the number and the momentum of the particles, and the duration of the evolution. Computing this bound with experimentallly achievable values, we see that in that regime the QCA model cannot be discriminated from the usual Dirac evolution.
Finally, we show that the evolution of one-particle states with narrow-band in momentum can be efficiently simulated by a dispersive differential equation for any regime. This analysis allows for a comparison with the dynamics of wave-packets as it is described by the usual Dirac equation.
This paper is a first step in exploring the idea that quantum field theory could be grounded on a more fundamental quantum cellular automaton model and that physical dynamics could emerge from quantum information processing. In this framework, the discretization is a central ingredient and not only a tool for performing non-perturbative calculation as in lattice gauge theory. The automaton model, endowed with a precise notion of local observables and a full probabilistic interpretation, could lead to a coherent unification of an hypothetical discrete Planck scale with the usual Fermi scale of high-energy physics
Abstract : Intending to delineate the way the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco has been inserted in the Brazilian literary system and the paths his translated books have followed, this thesis gives voice to the translating experiences of his translators. Baricco's insertion in Brazil began in 1997, through a personal project of Dr. Roberta Barni, with her translation of Oceano Mare. Since then, seven other of his works have been published in Brazil, three of which were translated by Roberta Barni and the other four by four different translators. On the one hand, the translator is considered as the main figure in mediation betweencultures and, on the other, this figure's reality is analyzed within theliterary system: its invisibility, its limits and its professional practice. Criticisms and reviews of this Italian author published in well established Brazilian newspapers are also considered, with the understanding that they are part of Baricco's image reflected here
Quantum reading of unitary optical devices
We address the problem of quantum reading of optical memories, namely the retrieving of classical information stored in the optical properties of a media with minimum energy. We present optimal strategies for ambiguous and unambiguous quantum reading of unitary optical memories, namely when one’s task is to minimize the probability of errors in the retrieved information and when perfect retrieving of information is achieved probabilistically, respectively. A comparison of the optimal strategy with coherent probes and homodyne detection shows that the former saves orders of magnitude of energy when achieving the same performances. Experimental proposals for quantum reading which are feasible with present quantum optical technology are reported
A simple ultrasonic Indoor/Outdoor detector for mobile devices
Context information is fundamental for mobile application. A system able to detect Indoor/Outdoor state switching can give useful information to upper-level applications permitting to improve their performance or reduce the computational load and consequently the lifetime of the smartphone. A localization application may exploit the Indoor/Outdoor information to smartly decide if using GPS (that performs well outdoors but poorly indoors) or other localization methods. In this paper we present an ultrasonic-signal-based Indoor/Outdoor detector for smartphones. The phone plays an ultrasonic ping by using its in-built speakers and records the echoes by using its microphone, therefore, no specific hardware is required to be added to the smartphone. The proposed detector shows good performance in terms of accuracy and latency
Tradeoff between energy and error in the discrimination of quantum-optical devices
We address the problem of energy-error tradeoff in the discrimination between two linear passive quantum optical devices with a single use. We provide an analytical derivation of the optimal strategy for beamsplitters and an iterative algorithm converging to the optimum in the general case. We then compare the optimal strategy with a simpler strategy using coherent input states and homodyne detection. It turns out that the former requires much less energy in order to achieve the same performances
A massless interacting Fermionic Cellular Automaton exhibiting bound states
We present a Fermionic Cellular Automaton model which describes massless Dirac fermion in 1+1 dimension coupled with local, number preserving interaction. The diagonalization of the two particle sector shows that specific values of the total momentum and of the coupling constant allows for the formation of bound states. Furthermore, we present a classification of the local number-preserving interactions that are invariant under the isotropy group of the cellular automaton which simulates the Weyl equation.10 pages, 5 figure
