Tome I Textes, Tome II Livre d'images (photographies, dessins, gravures, documents); lexique, index hominum, index locorum, bibliographieInternational audienceIn 1903 the Swiss journalist William Ritter set out to walk through the Myjava region in the foothills of the Lesser Carpathians in the westernmost corner of Slovakia, which was still a part of the Kingdom of Hungary at the time. It was a revelation: he kept returning to this region until 2014, his passion for it inspired by the myth of a Slovak countryside protected from the effects of modernisation. However, Ritter, a dandy, aesthete and lover of boys, embellished this myth to fit his own dreams. He tirelessly made notes, drew, took photographs and enjoyed a relationship with Janko, who became his lover. He published articles on politics to pay the bills and wrote two sociographic novels (The/A Little Slovak Girl, 1903, and Slovak Stubbornness, 1910) and a study of the architecture of Myjava. But although he encouraged his friends – including Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, the future Le Corbusier – to travel there, this country remained his own secret domain [private passion?].During the years after 1900 Ritter was the author of pioneering articles on Mahler (the first in 1901), Studies of Foreign Art (1906), the first monograph in French on the Czech composer Smetana (1907), and reportage on Moravia and the painter Uprka (1912). But he could not lift the veil on his Slovakia. This book of images was inspired by the restoration at the Neuchâtel Library of discovered photographs, which it complements with samples of graphic work and written sources.

PAVAO RITTER VITEZOVIĆ, NATIONAL IDENTITY AND POLITICAL SCIENCE

    Get PDF
Using Quentin Skiner’s and John Pocock’s methodological guidelines, the author argues that the topic of the text by Pavao Ritter Vitezović, Oživljena Hrvatska /The Revived Croatia/ is – identity. The text establishes ethnic identity, and at the same time provides the “tools” for the future “constructors of the nation” in their creation of the national identity. Because of this, the author suggests that Pavao Ritter Vitezović, due to the subject he covered – identity – should be considered as part of the Croatian political science tradition

The diagnostic strategy in patients with fever or inflammation of unknown origin remains a major clinical challenge. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of F-18-FDG-PET/CT in patients with unexplained elevated C-reactive protein with or without fever. Contribution of F-18-FDG-PET/CT to the final diagnosis was evaluated. In addition we determined whether a differentiation between patients with or without fever is clinically reasonable. Patients, methods: We retrospectively analysed 72 consecutive patients with unexplained elevated C-reactive protein levels (above 8mg/l) that underwent F-18-FDG-PET/ CT in our facility between 10/2009 and 11/2012. 18F-FDG-PET/CT was considered a so-called diagnostic scan when results decisively led to a final diagnosis and adequate therapy with a response of symptoms was initiated due to the PET/CT result. Results: In 60/72 patients (83%) a final diagnosis was established. Diagnoses included infections (58%), non-infectious inflammatory diseases (29%) and malignancies (8%). F-18-FDG-PET/CT was true positive in 47 cases (65%) and the diagnostic scan in 29 patients (40%). Sensitivity of 18F-FDG-PET/CT was 81% and specificity was 86%. Diagnostics, final diagnoses, F-18-FDG-PET/CT results, SUVmax, C-reactive protein levels and the diagnostic scan did not differ significantly between patients with fever and patients without fever. Conclusion: F-18-FDG-PET/CT is a useful method in the diagnostic workup of patients with inflammation of unknown origin. In our series there was no significant difference between patients with or without fever. Regarding F-18-FDG-PET/CTimaging inflammation of unknown origin and unexplained fever can be joined to one entity

Robust cluster analysis and variable selection

    No full text
Clustering remains a vibrant area of research in statistics. Although there are many books on this topic, there are relatively few that are well founded in the theoretical aspects. In Robust Cluster Analysis and Variable Selection, Gunter Ritter presents an overview of the theory and applications of probabilistic clustering and variable selection, synthesizing the key research results of the last 50 years. The author focuses on the robust clustering methods he found to be the most useful on simulated data and real-time applications. The book provides clear guidance for the varying needs of bo

    No full text
This article deals with the Supplement-Band zu jedem italienisch-deutschen und deutsch-italienischen Wörterbuch, the supplementary volume to every Italian-German and German-Italian dictionary, published in Vienna in 1831 by the imperial-royal Rechnungsrath, “accountant”, Johann Ritter von Vogtberg. The volumewas developed in the context of the Habsburg Monarchy and was an auxiliarytool for civil servants and tradesmen who had to solve language-mediating tasks in the field of administration, trade or navigation in the Italian territories. For them, the larger German-Italian dictionaries of the time did not provide the necessary terminology. After an introduction to the teaching of Italian and German in the historical context under analysis and an overview of the situation of the German-Italian dictionary, the author Johann von Vogtberg is introduced. Furthermore, the most important notes on his approach are reconstructed from the preface to the supplementary volume. The conclusion is a random analysis of his four glossaries
