Porto Alegre: UFRGS, 2019. 333 pp.Já há algumas décadas, determinados conceitos, que pareciam sólidos e davam base a teorias antropológicas, estão sob suspeita na disciplina: sociedade, cultura, parentesco e, particularmente, religião. Hoje, é quase consensual na antropologia a necessidade de questionar sua universalidade. Críticas à religião como categoria antropológica (como a de Asad) são bastante conhecidas, sendo desnecessário repisá-las aqui. Mas quero atentar para o mal-estar daí derivado. Diante de uma noção tão abstrata, universalizável, temos de nos haver com o fato de que “religião” é uma palavra fundamentalmente eurocêntrica, demasiadamente cristã e que amiúde traduz mal práticas de povos não euro-americanos. Paira algum incômodo sobre como tratar a religião antropologicamente, se rejeitamos sua universalidade, mas permanecemos utilizando o termo, tanto para descrever certas instituições, práticas e ideias, quanto para demarcar temas e horizontes disciplinares. Nas últimas décadas, poucos antropólogos têm ousado propor um conceito de religião. Ainda assim, continuamos a fazer “antropologia da religião”. Aí o desconforto
