Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Bigger than My Dad’s Size Twelve Feet
Get PDFMany moons ago, around the year 1977, an incredible event in the eyes of a young girl occurred. I hiked to the top of Big “J” mountain with my 2 older brothers. It was thrilling to reach the “J” which stands for Juab County in Central Utah. This was no small feat for a five year old. Then we discovered giant tracks that were even bigger than my Dad’s size 12 feet. They didn’t look like human footprints with shoes, but like a giant foot. My brothers told me that maybe they were Bigfoot’s so we better get off the mountain. They hurried down the mountain and I rushed to keep up. I stopped briefly to look back and I saw a large brownish/black creature on the mountain. Almost scared out of my pants, I ran to catch my brothers. When I finally caught them and told them what I saw the creature was no longer there. Could it have been a bear or maybe Bigfoot? I’ll never know for sure, but when people ask me to this day if I believe in Bigfoot the answer is a resounding “yes”
Hey, Alexa, What’s the Weather?
Get PDFIt took a few years for Alexa to catch on. The jokes were sparse at first, not a whole lot of people knew about the device. The first rib that I remember receiving was from a friend of my brothers, who thought it was funny to ask me “Alexa, what’s the weather?”, like I was the device. Doing so every single time he saw me. When we passed in the halls, when my brother and I went to his house to play Dungeons and Dragons, etc. I truly mean every single time he saw me. I remember one time he did this when he passed me and a friend while we were running in the school 5K. My friend got all up in arms, thinking that he was cruelly making fun of me for my tall height. It was kind of funny, explaining to him that it was ok, he was making fun of me, but for an entirely different thing. And not doing so, maliciously, at least I thought he wasn’t trying to be mean. That was the extent of the jokes for a while, I think they initially got worse last year. The Amazon’s Alexa had gained notoriety by then. It had made appearances on SNL and a number of YouTube videos. Every new person I met had to comment when I told them my name “Alexa? Like the robot thingy?” yes, Alexa like the robot thingy. Every once in a while someone in my math class would shout out “Alexa, what’s the answer.” or “Hey, wiretap what’s 240/60?” stupid little things like that. It became a common theme of many class periods. Even my coworkers decided it was fun to tease me, my manager asking me to play Africa by Toto at random times, insisting that I sing it, right there and then, in the ice cream shop. People used to make fun of me for my last name “Bills like money? You must be rich then? Hah ha ha” But with the Amazon’s Alexa out and about, the jokes pointed towards my name have gotten much cleverer, and come much more often

Get PDFThis is a story that my seminary teacher, he was seminary teacher in Spanish Fork. [Uh] when I was a sophomore in high school at Spanish Fork High school. He was, I can’t remember his name. But he was a really funny seminary teacher, I really like him. He [Uh] had some stories to tell. And [uh] one of the stories, he was from Las Vegas, I guess when he first got married he, [uh] when he was a new seminary teacher, he [uh] came home from work one day and he said he felt like just pure evil when he entered his house. So he asked his wife what she did that day and he said that she told him that she went to a yard sale and bought some board games. And he asked her if he could see it, and [uh] so when he looked through the board games he found a Ouija board. And then, kinda the Mormon, Ouija board is kind of [uh, takes pause.]

Like a taboo, like I’ve heard stories from Ouija Boards from when I was a kid. So when he said that he asked her what she did. And he found that she had bought this Ouija Board, so he [uh] somehow went and threw it away and he said the next morning when he woke up, went outside and found that it was on his front porch. That gave me like goosebumps and stuff. So I don’t think he lied, he was a seminary teacher, so [takes pause]

Chaco Friday
Get PDFDear Lex, So as you already know my awesome friends and I have Chaco Friday every Friday. This mainly is to send off granola vibes but also to set us apart from other teenagers so we ain\u27t basic. The shoe itself is very comfortable which is a plus but it also makes us a community and draws people together if you do your research there is a thing called Chaco nation. Chacos are very popular in the outdoor and cross-country kid community. At cross country meets many people compliment my amazing chacos and I return the compliment for theirs are awesome to. It gives a sense of friendly competition. Meets are often on Friday. I didn\u27t create Chaco Friday so I don\u27t know if this was why it is on Friday or if it\u27s because it\u27s the end of the week and we just need to air out our feet, or maybe it is just catchy. Needless to say Chaco Friday is the best weekly national not yet but soon to be holiday there is. Love, Your Chaco loving cousin Allie.
