Kütüphanelerarası İşbirliğinin Neresindeyiz?
Full text linkThe amount of information sources available through both printed and electronic media are ever increasing. Even libraries with considerable collection development budgets are having difficulties in coping with this increase. Yet with the development of new technologies, the possibilities of innovative interlibrary cooperation projects emerge: libraries combining their efforts through various consortia are trying to get access to electronic information sources more economically. In this paper, we briefly review the Turkish university library budgets, summarize the current developments in interlibrary cooperation and concentrate on efforts to form a university library consortium in Turkey to provide consortial access to electronic information sources and services. We discuss some of the causes which are presumably delaying the establishment of such a consortium
A land information system for Turkey - a key to the country's sustainable development
Full text linkThis paper describes the development by the General Directorate of
Rural Services (GDRS) of a land information system for Turkey,
namely the National Soil and Water Information System. It is of
great significance for the modern state of Turkey as, prior to its
establishment in 1999 under the Turkish Agricultural Research
Project, there was no definitive, national technological information
resource underpinning land and water resource management. The
system will underpin the operational and research responsibilities
of the Directorate in combating some of the pressing contemporary
environmental concerns in Turkey, including wind and water
erosion, waterlogging, sodicity and salination of the soil resource.
The complex process of compiling the first national digital soil map
will be among the initial tasks, as well as establishing a national
infrastructure for distributing the information amongst GDRS
managers and scientists. With the proposed accession of the
Turkish Republic to the European Union, alignment of the National
Soil and Water Information System with European standards and
protocols will prove to be an important facet of its ongoing
development

No full textWeb’in yeni bir dijital ağa dönüşmesi birçok yeni gelişmenin ve uygulamanın ortaya çıkmasını sağladı. Web 2.0 uygulamaları ile kullanıcıların da sunulan içeriğe ekleme yapabildikleri; içeriği geliştirebildikleri; katkıda bulunabildikleri ve kolayca öğrenebildikleri bir ortam yaratılmış ve kullanıcıların katılımı sağlanmıştır. Internet, insanların bir parçası haline gelmiş, birbirleri ile buluştukları bir platform olmuştur. Kullanıcılar, içinde yer alabildikleri; katkıda bulunabildikleri ve yaratıcı oldukları sistemleri daha çok benimsemektedirler. Yaşanan bu gelişmeler doğal olarak kütüphanecilik alanında da karşılığını bulmuştur. Kütüphane 2.0 etkileşimli, katılımcı ve çoklu ortamlı web tabanlı teknolojilerin kütüphane hizmetlerine ve koleksiyonlarına uygulanmasıdır. Kütüphane 2.0, kullanıcıları katılımcı olmaya davet etmekte ve sunulan servislerde kullanıcı odaklı bir paylaşımı amaçlamaktadır. Bu gelişmeler doğrultusunda bu çalışmada, Sabancı Üniversitesi Bilgi Merkezi Kullanıcı Hizmetleri’nde yapılan web 2.0 uygulamaları ve diğer bilgi hizmetlerini pazarlama çalışmaları anlatılmıştır

The Impact of Electronic Journals on Document Delivery Services
Full text linkCollection management policies of libraries were mainly shaped by in-house use of materials in the past. Yet the emergence of electronic journals and their availability through publishers’ or aggregators’ web sites is changing this practice considerably. Libraries are no longer limited with the “one source – one user” model. This paper investigates the potential impact of the availability of electronic journals through the web sites of publishers or library consortia on document delivery services. It reviews the relevant literature first and reports the findings of the study with regards to the provision of articles through electronic journals and its impact on the Turkish national document delivery service. It then compares the number of articles supplied through the service with that downloaded from publishers’ web sites by the users of the consortium of Turkish academic libraries. Following questions are addressed: Is document “delivery” using traditional or electronic means becoming a withering practice in libraries? Would document delivery services exist as we know them today in the age of electronic journals, big deals, and library consortia? The paper discusses the implications of electronic journals available through big deals on national document delivery services along with some conclusions
