Birds of a Feather Shop Together: Aesop's Fables for the Fashionable Set

    No full text
This book is a delightful surprise. It takes some seventeen traditional Aesop's fables, told in the book's last pages. For each it spins out a new tale about fashion, shopping, and clothes. The watercolor (?) illustrations are splashy, colorful, and suggestive. For a taste, try A Girl with Curls (30) and Bella and the Mouse (38) for both text and illustration. The contemporary shopping stories translate the fables well. This book is worth showing off in a lecture on fables. This is a hardbound book (hard cover)First printingSandra Bar

SARA LEE FOODS TAKES FLIGHT: AN ECONOMIC IMPACT ANALYSIS OF A TURKEY PLANT CLOSURE

    No full text
In 1998, the Sara Lee Corporation implemented a corporate strategy of deverticalization. Bil Mar Foods, Inc., a subsidiary of Sara Lee responsible for the processing of packaged meat products, followed the strategy by shutting down its turkey slaughter facility in Zeeland, Michigan. As a consequence, turkey growers in Michigan were left with no viable outlet for live bird slaughter and the potential end of live bird production in the region. This study analyzes the economic impact associated with the cessation of live bird slaughter at the Bil Mar Foods plant. The economic consequences may be as high as an 81millionlossintotalindustryoutput,a81 million loss in total industry output, a 29 million loss in income, and a total employment loss of nearly 800 jobs. Faced with these economic consequences, turkey growers in the region joined forces to form a valued-added cooperative.impact analysis, plant closure, turkey industry, Community/Rural/Urban Development, Livestock Production/Industries,

    Transdisciplinary Engineering Research Challenges

    No full text
Transdisciplinary research (TDR) has been the subject of discourse in the past few decades, but has not been studied much in the context of engineering problems. Many engineering problems can be characterized as ill-defined, like open innovation, adoption of new technology, business development, and the adoption of the Industry 4.0 concept. Transdisciplinary engineering research (TDER) is also performed in large projects by multi-disciplinary teams, as in TDR projects, including stakeholders and people from practice. Such projects may last long, often years. In such large projects, the involved disciplines should include both engineering disciplines as well as disciplines from social sciences. In this paper we address the challenges that exist in adopting a TDER approach. Universities need to prepare students to work in TDER projects. We discuss the current situation in transdisciplinary engineering education (TDEE) and identify challenges that need to be addressed for including TDEE in curricula. The paper ends with a summary and ideas for further research

Women and Tacoma's Civil Rights Movement: Mrs. Bil Moss

    No full text
Community leader Bil Moss looks back at six decades of social activism and discusses her involvement in Tacoma's civil rights movement. She describes her early work to secure open housing in Tacoma, which arose from her personal struggles to purchase property outside the Hilltop area, and her work with the Tacoma Chapter of the Links on the Sickle Cell Project. Moss touches on a number of her civic and political activities in these three lengthy interviews and shares some insights into the social barriers she has faced as an African-American woman. The Bil Moss oral history interviews form the core of a class project by Kristina L. Walker for the Community History Project under the supervision of Professor Michael K. Honey. The contents of Walker's project are contained in a looseleaf binder, which includes the transcripts of the interviews, Walkers research paper, and twelve undated color photographs of Moss and Walker, presumably taken in Mosss home on the day of the interview. Also included are a number of photocopied news articles covering Mosss political career and civic activities, a collection of photocopied portraits and family pictures from the Moss family, and other research materials. Two CD-Rs contain the original sound recording of the interview and digital copies of the photographs and transcript documents
