    Starvation resistance in Drosophila melanogaster in relation to the polymorphisms at the Adh and αGpdh loci

    In view of the world-wide latitudinal cline of the Adh and alpha Gpdh allozyme frequencies of Drosophila melanogaster and the interactions between these loci, experiments were performed to study the phenotypic effects of these loci. Starvation resistance, oxygen consumption, body weight, protein content and triglycerides content were measured in flies with all possible combinations of Adh and alpha Gpdh alleles. Genotypic differences were found for survival time under food deprivation, body weight, protein content and triglycerides content. Oxygen consumption did not differ significantly between genotypes. A significant positive correlation was observed between triglycerides content and starvation resistance. Body weight, protein content and triglycerides content decreased significantly during starvation but no rate differences between genotypes could be found. It is argued that genotypic differences in starvation resistance and triglycerides content can play a role in the maintenance of the world-wide dine of Adh and alpha Gpdh allele frequencies

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Interaction between the Adh and αGpdh loci in Drosophila melanogaster: Adult survival at high temperature

    The role of high temperature resistance in the world-wide cline of Adh and alpha-Gpdh allele frequencies of Drosophila melanogaster was investigated. Experimental strains were used with different combinations of Adh and alpha-Gpdh alleles but with similar genetic background. The survival time of adult males, reared at different pre-adult temperatures, was measured at 35-degrees-C. To investigate the relationship between survival and protein content, triglycerides content and ADH and alpha-GPDH enzyme activity, the latter characters were measured before and after 12 h exposure to 35-degrees-C. Three-way ANOVA of survival at 35-degrees-C showed significant effects of rearing temperature and Adh genotype, interaction between Adh and alpha-Cpdh, interaction between Adh and rearing temperature and interaction between Adh, alpha-Gpdh and rearing temperature, alpha-GPDH enzyme activity did not change significantly. Although protein content, triglycerides content and ADH enzyme activity decreased significantly at 35-degrees-C, no correlation was observed between survival and these traits. It is concluded that the world-wide cline of Adh and alpha-Gpdh allele frequencies cannot simply be explained by the genotypic differences in resistance to high temperature of adult Drosophila melanogaster

    Dynamics of genetic rescue in inbred Drosophila melanogaster populations

    Genetic rescue has been proposed as a management strategy to improve the fitness of genetically eroded populations by alleviating inbreeding depression. We studied the dynamics of genetic rescue in inbred populations of Drosophila. Using balancer chromosomes, we show that the force of heterosis that accompanies genetic rescue is large and allows even a recessive lethal to increase substantially in frequency in the rescued populations, particularly at stress temperatures. This indicates that deleterious alleles present in the immigrants can increase significantly in frequency in the recipient population when they are in linkage disequilibrium with genes responsible for the heterosis. In a second experiment we rescued eight inbred Drosophila populations with immigrants from two other inbred populations and observe: (i) there is a significant increase in viability both 5 and 10 generations after the rescue event, showing that the increase in fitness is not transient but persists long-term. (ii) The lower the fitness of the recipient population the larger the fitness increase. (iii) The increase in fitness depends significantly on the origin of the rescuers. The immigrants used were fixed for a conditional lethal that was mildly deleterious at 25A degrees C but lethal at 29A degrees C. By comparing fitness at 25A degrees C (the temperature during the rescue experiment) and 29A degrees C, we show that the lethal allele reached significant frequencies in most rescued populations, which upon renewed inbreeding became fixed in part of the inbred lines. In conclusion, in addition to the fitness increase genetic rescue can easily result in a substantial increase in the frequency of mildly deleterious alleles carried by the immigrants. This can endanger the rescued population greatly when it undergoes recurrent inbreeding. However, using a sufficient number of immigrants and to accompany the rescue event with the right demographic measures will overcome this problem. As such, genetic rescue still is a viable option to manage genetically eroded populations

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Effects of assay conditions in life history experiments with Drosophila melanogaster

    Selection experiments with Drosophila have revealed constraints on the simultaneous evolution of life history traits. However, the responses to selection reported by different research groups have not been consistent. Two possible reasons for these inconsistencies are (i) that different groups used different environments for their experiments and (ii) that the selection environments were not identical to the assay environments in which the life history traits were measured. We tested for the effect of the assay environment in life history experiments by measuring a set of Drosophila selection lines in laboratories working on life history evolution with Drosophila in Basel, Groningen, Irvine and London. The lines measured came from selection experiments from each of these laboratories. In each assay environment, we measured fecundity, longevity, development time and body size. The results show that fecundity measurements were particularly sensitive to the assay environment. Differences between assay and selection environment in the same laboratory or differences between assay environments between laboratories could have contributed to the differences in the published results. The other traits measured were less sensitive to the assay environment. However, for all traits there were cases where the measurements in one laboratory suggested that selection had an effect on the trait, whereas in other laboratories no such conclusion would have been drawn. Moreover, we provide good evidence for local adaptation in early fecundity for lines from two laboratories
