Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Get PDFThis article is devoted to investigating some language peculiarities of modern English scientific and technical literature style which influence mainly the specific character of its rendering into Ukrainian. The author analyses the linguistic features of scientific and technical texts: the peculiar impersonal constructions, the wide usage of quotations and references, the frequent usage of foot-notes, and different terms and etc. Both scientific and technical styles create the fundamental part of the non-fiction used in writing guidance, manuals, and instructions for installation, specific characteristics and requirements, books as guides, scientific articles, monographs or textbooks but these styles may also be found in oral form in scientific reports, lectures and discussions at conferences.For the last decades the scientific and technical styles have split into a lot of new and more specialized styles as a result of technology and higher specialization. The author proves a concept of scientific and technical translation in modern linguistics, offers the requirements of rendering scientific and technical texts and concludes that scientific and technical translator plays the key role in the process of translating scientific and technical texts because the translator’s primary task is presenting information in an appropriate way to make communication successful and effective in the scientific and technicalareas by means of the target language. This information should be translated in the most precise and objective way so the mentioned aim explains all rendering means used by a translator for interpreting scientific and technical texts.Keywords: scientific and technical style, the genre of scientific writing terms and professional knowledge, science vocabulary, purely scientific phraseology, scientific and technical translation.Исследованы языковые особенности стиля современной английской научно-технической литературы, которые существенно влияют на специфику ее перевода на украинский язык. Проанализированы лингвистические черты научно-тех-нических текстов: характерные безличные конструкции, широкое использование цитат и сносок, различного рода терминов и т.п.Подчеркнуто, что как научный, так и технический стили составляют фундаментальную часть нехудожественной письменной литературы и используются в справочниках, пособиях, инструкциях по установке, специальных технических характеристиках, в книгах-справочниках, научных статьях, монографиях или учебниках. Однако эти стили могут быть представлены и в усной форме научных докладов, лекций и дискуссий на конференциях. В последние десятилетия стиль научно-технической литературы разделился на новые и более специализированные стили, чтосвидетельствует о развитии технологий и дальнейшей специализации.Дано определение научно-технического перевода в современном языкознании, рассмотрены требования к переводу научно-технических текстов и сделан вывод, что переводчик научно-технической литературы играет важную роль, поскольку его первоочередной задачей является обеспечение информации, которая в дальнейшем используется для определенных целей. Эту информацию необходимо перевести средствами другого языка как можно точнее и понятнее, чтобы сделать акт коммуникации в научной или технической сфере успешным и эффективным. Указанная цель обусловливает все переводческие приемы и способы, которые использует специалист для интерпретации научно-технических текстов.Ключевые слова: научно-технический стиль, жанр научной литературы, термины и профессиональные знания, научная лексика и фразеология, научно-технический перевод.Досліджено мовні особливості стилю сучасної англійської наукової і технічноїлітератури, які суттєво впливають на специфіку її перекладу українською мовою. Проаналізовано лінгвістичні ознаки науково-технічних текстів: характерні безособові конструкції, широке використання цитат і посилань, різноманітних термінів тощо. Висловлено думку, що як науковий, так і технічний стилі складають фундаментальну частину нехудожньої письмової літератури і застосовуються в письмових довідниках, посібниках та інструкціях по установці, особливих технічних характеристиках і вимогах, у книгах-довідниках, наукових статтях, монографіях або підручниках. Але ці стилі можуть бути представлені і в усній формі наукових доповідей, лекцій і дискусій на конференціях. За останні десятиліття стиль науково-технічної літератури був розділений на нові і більш спеціалізовані стилі, що є результатом розвитку технологій і подальшої спеціалізації. Надано визначення науково-технічного перекладу в сучасному мовознавстві, розглянуто вимоги щодо перекладу науково-технічних текстів і зроблено висновок, що перекладач науково-технічної літератури має велике значення, оскільки його первинною задачею є подання інформації, яку подалі буде використано для певних цілей. Тому цю інформацію треба перекласти засобами іншої мови якомога точніше і зрозуміліше, щоб зробити спілкування у науковій або технічній сфері успішним та ефективним. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
