    Constructing indicators from patent specifications: What they reveal and what they imply?

The paper attempts to highlight this through empirical examination of patents granted to Indian institutions in the US.     Fast encoding of synthetic aperture radar raw data using compressed sensing

    Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is active and coherent microwave high resolution imaging system, which has the capability to image in all weather and day-night conditions. SAR transmits chirp signals and the received echoes are sampled into In-phase (I) and Quadrature (Q) components, generally referred to as raw SAR data. The various modes of SAR coupled with the high resolution and wide swath requirements result in a huge amount of data, which will easily exceed the on-board storage and downlink bandwidth of a satellite. This paper addresses the compression of the raw SAR data by sampling the signal below Nyquist rate using ideas from Compressed Sensing (CS). Due to the low computational resources available onboard satellite, the idea is to use a simple encoder, with a 2D FFT and a random sampler.     Demulsifier performance in diluted bitumen dewatering: effects of mixing and demulsifier dosage

    Mixing conditions were explored as a possible avenue for improvement of demulsifier performance in the solvent-diluted bitumen dewatering process. The effects of demulsifier bulk concentration, demulsifier injection concentration, and mixing energy on water and solids removal from the oil phase were tested. All of the experiments were carried out in a confined impeller stirred tank, which provides well-characterized mixing conditions and relatively uniform flow and turbulence. Results showed that lowering the injection concentration and increasing the mixing energy both improve demulsifier performance, allowing a 50% drop in the bulk concentration of demulsifier. This result agrees well with an earlier study by Laplante et al.1 in which a different demulsifier was investigated. In that study, it was shown that the product of mixing time and energy dissipation rate at the feed point (the mixing energy = J) provides an alternate mixing variable.</p

    Reduce overdosing effects in chemical demulsifier applications by increasing mixing energy and decreasing injection concentration

    It has been known for years that the performance of a demulsifier in diluted bitumen dewatering improves up to a certain demulsifier bulk concentration. After this limit, the water removal deteriorates. This phenomenon is called overdosing. In this paper, the effects of mixing energy and demulsifier injection concentration on water removal are studied in systems with a high bulk demulsifier concentration. The experiments were conducted in a confined impeller stirred tank (CIST), which provides well-controlled mixing conditions with more uniform turbulence and flow than a conventional stirred tank. The results show that an increase in mixing energy and pre-dilution of the demulsifier may be able to overcome overdosing effects at a high bulk (mean) concentration. If the mixing conditions are well-designed, high local demulsifier concentrations at the feed point are avoided and the demulsifier can perform well, even at high bulk concentrations. The best demulsifier performance in an overdosed system was obtained with a combination of high mixing energy and low injection concentration, where over 80% of the water content was separated at a demulsifier bulk concentration that showed severe overdosing behavior at poor mixing conditions.</p

    Regulating two-sided markets: an empirical investigation

    We study the effect of government encouraged or mandated interchange fee ceilings on consumer and merchant adoption and usage of payment cards in an economy where card acceptance is far from complete. We believe that we are the first to use bank- level data to study the impact of interchange fee regulation. We find that consumer and merchant welfare improved because of increased consumer and merchant adoption leading to greater usage of payment cards. We also find that bank revenues increased when interchange fees were reduced although these results are critically dependent on merchant acceptance being far from complete at the beginning and during the implementation of interchange fee ceilings. In addition, there is most likely a threshold interchange fee below which social welfare decreases although our data currently does not allow us to quantify it.Payment systems ; Consumers

    Research on Marine Sciences under Core University Marine Science Program in the Period of 2001-2005 : The Bibliometrics Approach

    This research aims to analyze the contribution of collaboration research under Core University Marine Science Program sponsored by Japan Society for Promotion of Sciences (JSPS) over a period of 2001-2005. The data were papers of JSPS seminars. We used co-word technique of bibliometrics methods to identify the research topics. Then we calculated which topics are core and prominence levels based on method of Sujit Battarcharja and Moh’d Taiyab Rashid Khan. In-depth interviews were also carried out to explore problems on Indonesian marine research besides getting confirmation, comments and ideas related to the result of bibliometrics analysis. The informants were experts in marine science from a research institution, a government ministry, and a university. The results of this study could be employed to evaluate the research collaboration program between LIPI and Japanese institutions especially under JSPS program in the future

    Acute diarrheal diseases (ADD) are important causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. ADD includes, among others, cholera, shigellosis, and rotavirus diarrhea. These diseases are known to cause sporadic epidemics. Cholera and shigellosis are known to even cause pandemics. The treatments of these two diseases have been simplified with the advent of oral rehydration therapy and effective antibiotics. However, development of drug resistance poses tremendous therapeutic challenges. This book includes chapters on new methods of classification of dehydration and this information will provide a better classification method of dehydration. Epilepsy and its association with acute diarrhea is a new area for research. Prevention of acute diarrhea in school children and treatment with herbal medicines are important areas to pursue further. The readers will find herein new concepts in diarrheal disease research and management
