Assessment of Articular Cartilage by Second Harmonic Microscopy: Challenges and Opportunities

    Get PDF
Second harmonic microscopy (SHM) has emerged as a powerful non-destructive optical imaging modality that has high potential to perform the advanced structural characterization of intact articular cartilage. This article provides the current status, opportunities, and challenges of SHM for the use in cartilage evaluation. A novel perspective on SHM is being addressed that includes the reason, need and the importance of SHM in the assessment of articular cartilage. By taking the advantage of collagen specificity and high-resolution imaging, SHM can detect the structural and morphological changes in early stage cartilage damage that would otherwise be overlooked by standard clinical imaging methods such as radiography and arthroscopy. The current status of SHM for articular cartilage analysis and the major progress reported in recent literature are briefly described herein. We summarize the status of scientific efforts and the challenges that need to overcome before moving toward clinical applications of SHM in the context of cartilage evaluation.publishedVersionCopyright © 2019 Kumar and Kumar. Article and Author Level Measurements

    Get PDF
Article and author level measurements have been discussed in this Unit. Author and researcher identifiers are absolutely essential for searching databases in the WWW because a name like D Singh can harbour a number of names such as Dan Singh, Dhan Singh, Dhyan Singh, Darbara Singh, Daulat Singh, Durlabh Singh and more. The ResearcherID.com, launched by Thomson Reuters, is a web-based global registry of authors and researchers that individualises each and every name. Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) is also a registry that uniquely identifies an author or researcher. Both have been discussed in this Unit. Article Level Metrics (Altmetrics) has been treated in this Unit with the discussion as to how altmetrics can be measured with Altmetric.com and ImpactStory.org. Altmetrics for Online Journals has also been touched. There are a number of academic social networks of which ResearchGate.net, Academia.edu, GetCited.org, etc. have been discussed. Regional journal networks with bibliometric indicators are also in existence. Two networks of this type such as SciELO – Scientific Electronic Library Online, and Redalyc have been dealt with. This Unit discusses in details aspects such as Unique Identifiers for Authors and Researchers; Article Level Metrics (Altmetrics); Academic Social Networks; and Regional Journal Networks with Bibliometric Indicators

International Tourist Arrivals, Foreign Exchange Earnings, and Barriers to Inbound Tourism in Bangladesh

    No full text
This research aims to examine the Long-Run (LR) and Short-Run (SR) impacts of foreign exchange earnings (FEE) from international tourists’ arrival in Bangladesh and identifies the barriers to inbound tourism so that the government can take the appropriate development plans or programmes for inbound tourism. This study is carried out using secondary as well as primary data and by deploying mixed methods. For qualitative data, a Key Informant Interview (KII) is deployed. This study\u27s quantitative method relies on econometric analysis. It includes the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) unit root test, the Johansen cointegration test, and the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) using yearly data ranging from the period 1995 to 2019. According to the cointegration and causality test results, there is no SR causal relationship between FEE and the number of tourist arrivals. However, an LR causal relationship exists not only between the earnings from foreign exchange and tourist arrivals numbers but also with the earnings from foreign exchange and capital investment in travel and tourism and earnings from foreign exchange and government spending on travel and tourism services. The qualitative data show that poor infrastructure and security of tourist destinations, lack of visa facilitation, high accommodation costs and unprofessional inbound tour operators are the major barriers to inbound tourism in Bangladesh. The results of the study will provide the Bangladeshi government with valuable information for crafting improved tourism policies that would benefit the nation\u27s economy

Information literacy and public libraries in India

Information literacy competency ensures maximum utilization of the information resources as well as optimization of information handling capabilities. Many libraries and information systems introduce user orientation programmes to educate users on the salient features of information resources, search techniques, search strategies, scholarly communications and other aspects. In India a number of training programmes are conducted by the different agencies, who are also architects of modern information systems, to the end-users. For example, INFLIBNET conducts workshops on information resources in Infonet e-journal consortium. NISCAIR conducts workshops on information resources in CSIR e-journal consortium. National Informatics Centre conducts training programmes on ‘biomedical information retrieval’ covering Indian Medlars Centre’s resources like, IndMED, medIND, OpenMED and UNcat. All these training programmes are meant to develop information literacy competencies of the end users. Similarly, public library authorities and public librarians should impart information literacy competencies to the public library users. The importance of public libraries would be felt more strongly, if the public libraries attract common citizens and younger generations and such librarians meet the information needs of all walks of users. Public libraries can also play a pivotal role for national development programmes and bringing mass affectivity of such programmes. Hence, horizontal diffusion of information literacy can reap the optimum value of envisaged programmes

Introduction to Research Evaluation Metrics and Related Indicators

This Unit encompasses and discusses citation analysis, use of citation-based indicators for research evaluation, common bibliometric indicators, classical bibliometric laws, author level indicators using authors’ public profiles, article level metrics using altmetric tools. It is to be noted that author level indicators and article level metrics are new tools for research evaluation. Author level indicators encompasses h index, citations count, i10 index, g index, articles with citation, average citations per article, Eigenfactor® score, impact points, and RG score. Article level metrics or altmetrics are based on Twitter, Facebook, Mendeley, CiteULike, and Delicious which have been discussed. All technical terms used in the Unit have been defined. This Unit discusses in details aspects such as Use of Citation-based Indicators for Research Evaluation; Transition from Citation-based Indicators to Author Level and Article Level Metrics for Research Evaluation
