Scale-dependent influence of pre-existing basement shear zones on rift faulting : a case study from NE Brazil
Rifting of continental crust initiates faults that are commonly influenced by pre-existing structures. We document newly identified faults cutting Precambrian units in the interior of the NE Brazilian margin to assess the effects of structural inheritance on both rift geometry and fault architecture. Stratigraphic and structural data indicate that the faults were active in the main phase of rifting of Gondwana. The influence of pre-existing structures on the Mesozoic rift faulting is scale dependent. Regionally, the faults trend parallel to subvertical, crustal-scale Brasiliano (c. 750–540 Ma) shear zones. Mylonitic foliations and broadly distributed low strain in the lower crust indicated by shear-wave splitting controlled the overall orientation and kinematics of the rift faults. However, outcrop observations of the faults show that at scales up to hundreds of metres, mylonitic foliations have little influence on fault architectures. Faults cross-cut shear zones and do not commonly utilize foliation planes as shear fractures. Instead, slip zones and fractures have a range of orientations that form acute angles to the local foliation orientation. This observation explains the range of focal mechanisms associated with seismicity that coincides with ancient shear zones in intra-continental areas

Analytical pyrolysis (Py‐GC/MS) of sediments: sea‐level rise episodes During the holocene in the potengi–jundiai estuary, ne brazil
Póster presentado en el la XVI Reunión Científica de la Sociedad Española de Cromatografía y Técnicas Afines (SECyTA2016) P‐ENV‐31Eds: González-Pérez, José Antonio.-- Almendros Martín, Gonzalo.-- González-Vila, Francisco Javier.-- Rosa Arranz, José M. de laUnderstanding sea‐level changes on various time‐scales is important because it is usually associated to climate changes [1]. Sediments in estuaries may retain a continuous record of climatic and environmental markers surrogated to factors like relative sea level (RSL), vegetation cover, and connectivity with the open ocean. Sediments accumulated since the last glacial maximum (LGM; c. 20 kyr.) are particularly informative and encompass valuable information to infer accurate RSL curves. Lipid biomarkers are preserved in sediments and include molecular markers like n‐alkanes and n‐alkanoic acids increasingly used for paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental reconstructions [2]. In this communication analytical pyrolysis (Py‐GC/MS) is used to study the structure of organic matter (OM) contained in dated sediments from core IG‐8 (31 m depth). This technique has been previously used to monitor past environmental changes in the area [3]. The core was drilled in the area of central flood delta of Potengi‐Jundiai estuary, through the sedimentary sequence accumulated since ca 9,8 kyr cal BP [4]. Marked compositional differences between the OM of different ages were found. Specifically the n‐alkane series were found particularly informative in discriminating OM sources (terrigenous vs marine). In the surface, the alkane series is characterized by a high average chain length (ACL) value indicating a clear influence from terrestrial vegetation. From 6.5 to 11.5 m depth an increase in the terrigenous contribution is observed by an increase in ACL values in correspondence with δ13C depletion. At 22.8 m depth and at 26.6 m there are again inputs from terrestrial plants, but for short periods of Time. Bellow 26.6 m the influence is marine and ends at 29.45 m with a neat alteration of sediment isotopic signature with a δ13C enriched layer with no organic markers and indicating the occurrence of sedimentary conditions favouring carbonate formation. Below this depth, the OM in the sediments shows a conspicuous terrestrial influence (depleted conductivity and δ13C and increase in alkanes ACL and long vs short chain length (L/S) ratio) that increase towards bottom of the core down at 30.95 m. This possibly indicates a drastic sea‐level change during this period of time.[1] G. Milne, A&G 49 (2008) 2.24‐2.28. (doi: 10.1111/j.1468‐4004.2008.49224.x)

The Use Of Apatite Fission Track Thermochronology To Constrain Fault Movements And Sedimentary Basin Evolution In Northeastern Brazil
An apatite fission track study of crystalline rocks underlying sedimentary basins in northeastern Brazil indicate that crustal blocks that occur on opposite sides of a geological fault experienced different thermal histories. Samples collected on the West block yielded corrected fission-track ages from 140 to 375 Ma, whereas samples collected on the East block yielded ages between 90 and 125 Ma. The thermal models suggest that each block experienced two cooling events separated by a heating event at different times. We concluded that the West block moved downward relative to the East block ca. 140 Ma ago, when sediments eroded from the East side were deposited on the West side. This process represents the early stage of sedimentary basin formation and the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean in the region. Downward and upward movements related to heating and cooling events of these crustal blocks at different periods until recent times are proposed. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd.396627633Bigazzi, G., Guedes, S., Hadler Neto, J.C., Iunes, P.J., Paulo, S.R., Tello Saenz, C.A., Application of neutron dosimetry by natural uranium and thorium thin films in fission-track dating (2000) Extended Abstract of Ninth International Conference on Fission Track Dating in Thermochronology, pp. 33-35. , Lorne, AustraliaFleischer, R.L., Hart, H.R., Fission track dating: Techniques and problems (1972) Calibration of Humanoid Evolution, pp. 135-170. , W.W. Clinical Trials In Brazilian Journals Of Ophthalmology: Where We Are
Purpose: To compare clinical trials published in Brazilian journals of ophthalmology and in foreign journals of ophthalmology with respect to the number of citationsand the quality of reporting [by applying the Consolidated Standards for ReportingTrials (CONSORT) statement writing standards]. Methods: The sample of this systematic review comprised the two Brazilianjournals of ophthalmology indexed at Science Citation Index Expanded and sixof the foreign journals of ophthalmology with highest Impact Factor® accordingISI. All clinical trials (CTs) published from January 2009 to December 2010 at theBrazilians journals and a 1:1 randomized sample of the foreign journals wereincluded. The primary outcome was the number of citations through the end of2011. Subgroup analysis included language. The secondary outcome includedlikelihood of citation (cited at least once versus no citation), and presence orabsence of CONSORT statement indicators. Results: The citation counts were statistically significantly higher (P < 0.001) in theForeign Group (10.50) compared with the Brazilian Group (0.45). The likelihoodcitationwas statistically significantly higher (P < 0.001) in the Foreign Group (20/20-100%) compared with the Brazilian Group (8/20-40%). The subgroup analysis ofthe language influence in Brazilian articles showed that the citation counts werestatistically significantly higher in the papers published in English (P <0.04). Of 37possible CONSORT items, the mean for the Foreign Group was 20.55 and for theBrazilian Group was 13.65 (P < 0.003).Conclusion: The number of citations and the quality of reporting of clinical trialsin Brazilian journals of ophthalmology still are low when compared with the foreignjournals of ophthalmology with highest Impact Factor®.7612125Chamon, W., Melo Jr, L.A., Impact factor and insertion of the ABO in the world scientific literature (2011) Arq Bras Oftalmol Internet, 74 (4), pp. 243-244. , http://www.scielo.br/pdf/abo/v74n4/v74n4a01.pdf, [cited 2012 May 21]Juãdie;ni, P., Altman, D.G., Egger, M., Systematic reviews in health care: assessing the quality of controlled clinical trials. Induced seismicity in the Castarthao reservoir, NE Brazil - Preliminary results
The Castanhao reservoir was built in the state of Ceara, a dry region in Northeastern Brazil, to regulate the flow of the Jaguaribe River, for irrigation, and for power generation. It is an earth-filled dam, 60 m high, with a water capacity of 4.5 x 10(9) m(3). The seismicity in the area has been monitored since 1998, with a few interruptions, using one analog or one digital station and, during a few periods, a three-station network. The first earthquakes likely to be induced events were detected in 2003, when the water level was about 20 in high. In early 2004 a very heavy rainfall season quickly filled the reservoir. Shortly after, an increase in the seismic activity occurred and many micro-earthquakes were recorded. We suggest that this activity resulted from an increase in pore pressure due to undrained response. Therefore, we may classify this cluster of microearthquakes as ""initial seismicity."" We deployed a network with four analog stations in the area, following this activity, to determine the epicentral zone. At least three epicentral areas under the reservoir were detected. The spatio-temporal analysis of the available data revealed that the seismicity occurs in clusters and that these were activated at different periods. We identified four sets of faults (N-S-, E-W-, NW-SE-, and NE-SW-oriented), some of which moved in shallow crustal levels and as recently as the Quaternary (1.8 Ma). Under the present-day stress regime, the last two sets moved as strike-slip structures. We suggest a possible correlation between dormant faults and the observed induced seismicity. Hydrothermal activity along a strike-slip fault zone and host units in the São Francisco Craton, Brazil – Implications for fluid flow in sedimentary basins
This study combines multiscale analyses of geological, fault, fracture, and stable isotope data to investigate strike-slip deformation and channeling of hydrothermal fluids along the Cafarnaum fault and calcite veins at different distances from the fault, which is a structure in the São Francisco Craton, northeastern Brazil. Meteoric fluids with δD values near −45‰ and δ18O values near −6.5‰ and temperatures at 40–70 °C precipitated as calcite veins in the host carbonate units. The Cafarnaum fault, a N-S-striking vertical, ~170 km long fault zone, juxtaposes Neoproterozoic carbonate rocks in the western block and Mesoproterozoic siliciclastic rocks in the eastern block. A zone of restraining bends occurs at the central part of the fault, whereas termination zones of horsetail geometry occur at both ends of the Cafarnaum fault. These zones are marked by NW-SE-striking extensional faults that are oblique to the main N-S-striking fault zone, where hydrothermal deposits occur. The zone of influence of the Cafarnaum fault is ~ 20 km wide around the main fault. The fault formed during the Brasiliano orogeny (740–560 Ma) after Neoproterozoic carbonate platform deposition. In contrast with the host units, fluids along the fault zone originated in deeper levels of the crust and show much lower δ18O values, indicating higher crystallization temperatures. These fluids caused brecciation in the Neoproterozoic carbonate host rocks, whereas a subsequent decrease in fluid pressure and cooling near the surface resulted in the precipitation of a hydrothermal paragenesis in veins, also affecting the host rock
Mangrove pollen of Indonesia and its suitability as a sea-level indicator
I investigated the mangroves of Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, to assess their potential as proxies for reconstructing sea-level during the Holocene. Initial investigations confirmed that the mangrove species demonstrate zonations parallel to the shoreline and are dominated by the family Rhizophoraceae with Avicennia, Heritiera and Sonneratia also important constituents of the mangroves. The vertical distributions of pollen assemblages were investigated at three sites in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Partial CCA analysis demonstrated that at all three sites, elevation was a significant control on the distribution of pollen assemblages in surface samples. The three contemporary transects were combined to develop a regional transfer function to elucidate the relationship between the surface assemblages and elevations using the Maximum Likelihood (ML) method. The developed transfer function indicated mangrove pollen can be utilised as a precise indicator of past sea-levels with an error of ±0.22m The transfer function was applied to two fossil cores from the Wakatobi Marine National Park and evaluated using the Modem Analogue Technique. Both cores showed similar patterns in changes of Reference Water Level and had modem analogues in the contemporary training set. I conclude that mangrove pollen is a suitable proxy for reconstructing sea-level in tropical environments
