Impact of campus physical characteristics on university sustainability performance

To download, navigate to Log In in the top right-hand corner of this screen, then select Log in with my UTSA ID.There has been increasing attention and effort for campus sustainability practices from governmental and non-governmental organizations because of its proven negative effect on environment, strong influence on society, and huge economic power on market. Those efforts and activities include campus recycling, sustainable transportation in campus, and eco-efficient (green) campus buildings, etc... Those practices directly related to individual campuses, and the purpose was to rehabilitate them to achieve sustainability in a single campus. Since there has been a progress for campus sustainability effort, a parallel question appears? Which campus model performs better for sustainability? In other words, do certain campus physical characteristics such as urban density, residential character, and population have any influence on campus sustainability performance? This is a necessary question to answer because it is not only related directly to campus sustainability internal issues (individual campus sustainability practices) but also related to external sustainability issues (regional and city sustainability practices), such as the urban density of city, density of downtown and university, location of a campus in the city, and campus population. These important factors matter while considering city sustainability because higher education institutes have huge influence on cities economically, socially, and environmentally. Although this study is not able to cover all of the those components, this research intends to identify certain campus physical characteristics (urban density, residential character, and population) on campus sustainability performance and reveal a pattern, if there is one, by using STARS campus sustainability assessment tool database as a benchmark to conduct a correlational study. For this correlational study, 58 sample campuses across the US are going to be investigated. The dependent comparison factor is going to be final STARS sustainability score. The results of this correlational study will reveal optimum campus physical characteristics (the ideal location for campuses in cities, the optimum residential character, and effective population scope) for campus, city, and regional sustainability purpose. Proposed results of study will be quite informing for existing and future campus decision making mechanisms as well as city urban planning and designing departments, since campuses are an effective part of cities and communities, in order to achieve desired sustainable society goal.Architectur
INVESTIGATION OF URBAN TEXTURE AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION RELATIONSHIP IN THE CONTEXT OF URBAN TRANSFORMATION: KADIKÖY CASE STUDY
Türkiye büyük bir kentsel dönüşüm süreci yaşamaktadır. Kentsel yenileme olarak da adlandırılan busüreç mahalle ve bina (yerinde dönüşüm) ölçeklerinde gerçekleşmektedir. Literatürde kentseldönüşüm süreci irdelenirken daha çok mahalle ölçeğindeki dönüşüm sorunsalına odaklanılmaktadır.Fakat bina ölçekli dönüşüm ile ilişkili problemlerin karakteristiği farklılık arz etmektedir. Bunlardanbir tanesi doku farklılaşmasıdır. Yerinde yenileme süreciyle, mevcut kentsel doku ve onun mikroiklim özellikleri değişmektedir. Sokak içerisindeki az katlı mevcut bir yapı dönüşüm geçirerek çokkatlı bina olarak inşa edilmekte ve dokudaki komşu binaları gölgelemektedir. Bu durumda mevcutbinaların enerji tüketim performansının etkilenmesi öngörülebilir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, yeniden inşaedilen çok katlı binaların dokudaki mevcut binalar üzerindeki etkisinin enerji açısındanincelenmesidir. Kentsel yenileme aktivitesinin çok yüksek olması nedeniyle örnek çalışma alanıSuadiye (Kadıköy, İstanbul) olarak seçilmiştir. Bilgisayar simülasyon metodolojisi kullanılarak, birreferans binanın enerji performansı üç doku senaryosu için hesaplanmıştır: temel durum (kırsaldoku), 1960 kentsel dokusu ve 2019 dokusu (yenileme sonrası). Yapı kabuğunun sabit tutulduğu buçalışmada kent dokusunun bina enerji tüketimine etkisi açıkça gözlenmiştir. Çalışma sonuçlarınagöre kırsal dokudan 1960 dokusuna geçiş sürecinde referans binanın aydınlatma ve ısıtma enerjitüketimi artmıştır. 2012 yılında çıkan 6306 sayılı kentsel dönüşüm kanunu ile kent dokusu optimizeedilerek enerji tasarrufu sağlamak mümkündü. Fakat uygulamada, 1960 dokusundan 2019 dokusunadönüşümde referans binanın enerji tüketimi artmaya devam etmiştir. Başka bir ifadeyle, dokudeğişimi enerji tüketimini azaltmak yerine artırmıştır. Deprem riski ile zorunlu olarak yaşanan buyüksek maliyetli dönüşüm sürecinin hedeflerinden bir tanesi de enerji tasarrufunun sağlanmasıolarak belirtilmiştir. Bu amaçla, yenilenen binalarda kabuk yalıtımı zorunlu tutulmuştur. Fakat yapıkabuğundan bağımsız olarak, kent dokusunun karakteristiği de enerji tüketimi üzerinde önemli roloynamaktadır. Bu sebeple, kent dokusunun optimizasyonu dönüşüm sürecinin bir parçası olarakdeğerlendirilmeli ve bunu destekleyici yasal düzenlemeler gerçekleştirilmelidir. Kent dokusunamüdahale edilmeden önce potansiyel etki analizi yapılmalıdır.Turkey is undergoing a major transformation process. This process, also called urban renewal, takes place at neighborhood and building (on-site transformation) scales. The literature focuses on transformation problem of the neighborhood scale; however, the characteristics of the problems associated with building scale transformation differ. One of these is texture differentiation. With the on-site renewal process, the existing urban texture and its micro-climate characteristics change. An existing low-rise building in the street is transformed and built as a high-rise multi-storey building, which shades the neighboring buildings in the texture. In this case, it can be predicted that the energy consumption performance of existing buildings will be affected. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of reconstructed high-rise buildings on existing buildings in the texture in terms of energy performance. The study area is chosen as Suadiye (Kadıköy, Istanbul) because of the high urban renewal activity. Using computer simulation methodology, the energy performance of a reference building was calculated for three texture scenarios: base situation (rural texture), 1960 urban texture and 2019 texture (after renewal). In this study, in which the building envelope is kept constant, the effect of the urban texture on the building energy consumption is clearly observed. According to the results of the study, lighting and heating energy consumption of the reference building increased during the transition from rural to 1960 texture. With the urban transformation law numbered 6306 enacted in 2012, it would be possible to save energy by optimizing the urban texture. However, in practice, it is seen that energy consumption of the reference building is increased more in the transformation from the 1960 texture to the 2019 texture. In other words, texture change has increased energy consumption. One of the goals of this high-cost transformation process, which is necessarily experienced with earthquake risk in the first place, was stated as providing energy savings. For this purpose, envelope insulation is mandatory in reconstructed buildings. However, independent of the building envelope, the characteristics of the urban texture also play an important role in energy consumption. For this reason, the optimization of the urban texture should be evaluated as a part of the transformation process and legal regulations should be implemented to support this. Potential impact analysis should be done before intervening in the urban texture
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
