Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Surgical learning curve for open radical retropubic prostatectomy
Get PDFCilj istraživanja: Cilj ovog rada je prikazati rezultate liječenja raka prostate retropubičnim pristupom dva operatera u periodu od 01.01.2006. do ožujka 2015. godine uz analizu utjecaja iskustva i vještine operatera na ishod liječenja i istražiti da li postoji razlika između prve i druge polovice operacija u oba operatera zajedno te odvojeno u svakog operatera na ispitivane intra- i perioperacijske parametre. Također, cilj je bio i utvrditi razlike u ispitivanim parametrima između dva operatera
Materijal i metode: Istraživanje je provedeno na klinici za kirurgiju Kliničkog bolničkog centra u Splitu. U uzorku su bila 222 pacijenta sa lokaliziranim rakom prostate. Uključujući čimbenik je bio da je bolesnik operiran tehnikom otvorene radikalne retropubićne prostatektomije dok oni sa dijagnozom raka prostate koji nisu operirani ovom tehnikom nisu bili uključeni u ovaj rad. Svi bolesnici su operirani od strane dvojice specijalista urologa. Parametri uključeni u rad bili su trajanje hospitalizacije, sekrecija na dren, duljina trajanja operacije i transfuzije krvi i krvnih pripravaka. Podaci su skupljeni iz operacijskog protokola i uroloških pismohrana bolesti.
Rezultati: Između dva operatera najveća razlika je bila u učestalosti ordiniranja transfuzija krvi i krvnih pripravaka i trajanju hospitalizacije dok sekrecija na dren i trajanje operacije se nisu mijenjale. Analizirajući parametre rane i kasne faze istraživanja poboljšanje je dobiveno za trajanje hospitalizacije i to za kasnu fazu dok se ostali parametri, sekrecija na dren, transfuzije krvi i trajanje hospitalizacije nisu mijenjali. Analizom parametara rane i kasne faze istraživanja za pojedinog operatera dobili smo statistički značajnu razliku u trajanju hospitalizacije za Operatera 1 dok se ostali parametri nisu mijenjali. Za Operatera 2 nije bilo statistički značajne promjene ni za jedan od parametara.
Zaključak: Sustavna edukacija je najvažniji čimbenik u svladavanju retropubične radikalne prostatektomije. Kvaliteta i trajanje krivulje učenja najviše ovisi od broja izvršenih operacija od strane samog kirurga te sama tehnika otvorene radikalne retropubične prostatektomije je sigurna i učinkovita procedura za evaluaciju kirurške krivulje učenja.Objectives: The purpose of this paper is to show prostate cancer treatment results with the retropubic approach in two surgeons. The other goals are to show are there any differences between the first and second half of the operations in both surgeons combined and also separately in each surgeon. Establish differences in examined parameters between two surgeons.
Methods and materials: The study was conducted at the Department of urology of the University hospital, Split, Croatia. There were 222 patients included into this study with the localized prostate cancer. The including factor was that the patient had to be operated with the technique of open radical retropubic prostatectomy. Every patient with the diagnosis of localized prostate cancer who wasn't operated with this technique wasn't part of this study. All patients were operated by two specialists urologists. Parameters evaluated in this study were length of hospital stay, blood transfusions, length of operation and drain secretion. The data was collected from operative protocols and urologic patient's archives.
Results: Between two surgeons the biggest difference was in administrating blood transfusions and length of hospital stay unlike drain secretion which hasn't changed. After analysis of parameters of early and late phase of investigation the length of hospital stay was the one which significantly changed for late phase. There wasn't change for other parameters. With the analysis of parameters of early and late phase for each surgeon we had a statistically significant difference in length of hospital stay for surgeon 1 and rest of the parameters didn't change for both surgeon 1 and surgeon 2.
Conclusion: Sistematic education is the most important factor when it comes to managing radical retropubic prostatectomy. The quality and duration of the learning curve depends the most of the number of operations performed by a single surgeon and therefore, the technique of open radical retropubic prostatectomy is a safe and efficient procedure for evaluating surgeon's learning curve

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
