MEAN FIELD GAMES MASTER EQUATIONS: FROM DISCRETE TO CONTINUOUS STATE SPACE
This paper studies the convergence of mean field games (MFGs) with finite state space to MFGs with a continuous state space. We examine a space discretization of a diffusive dynamics, which is reminiscent of the Markov chain approximation method in stochastic control, but also of finite difference numerical schemes; time remains continuous in the discretization, and the time horizon is arbitrarily long. We are mainly interested in the convergence of the solution of the associated master equations as the number of states tends to infinity. We present two approaches, to treat the case without or with common noise, both under monotonicity assumptions. The first one uses the system of characteristics of the master equation, which is the MFG system, to establish a convergence rate for the master equations without common noise and the associated optimal trajectories, both when there is a smooth solution to the limit master equation and when there is not. The second approach relies on the notion of monotone solutions introduced by [8, 9]. In the presence of common noise, we show convergence of the master equations, with a convergence rate if the limit master equation is smooth, and by compactness arguments otherwise
Optical biosensor analysis in studying herpes simplex virus glycoprotein D binding to target nectin1 receptor
Studies on molecular interactions between cellular receptors of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and the viral glycoproteins showing receptor-binding activity are of great relevance for understanding the molecular basis of virus entry. Information on such interactions further provides the basis for a rational design of antiviral drugs. A variety of biochemical and biophysical methodologies are used for determining the binding parameters of interacting biomolecules. Most of them require relatively high amounts of the analyzed compounds, or the use of labeled target molecules. Here, we report the study of the binding of two recombinant forms of HSV glycoprotein D, gD(Δ290-299t) and gD(305t), and a recombinant form of the human cellular receptor for HSV, nectin1-Fc, by using an optical biosensor (IAsys Plus, Affinity Sensors, UK). This device detects and quantifies the changes in refractive index in the vicinity of the surface of sensor chips to which ligands are immobilized. The changes in the refractive index are proportional to the change in the absorbed mass, thus the analysis allows the monitoring of the interaction process in real-time and the determination of the binding parameters. HSV cellular receptor has been immobilized on the surface of the biosensor cuvette, bearing a carboxymethyl dextran layer. The immobilized receptor cuvette was then used for the binding experiments of the two glycoproteins. A significant difference in their dissociation constants was determined, showing for the gD(Δ290-299t) protein a much higher affinity (KD, 2.8×10-7 M) with respect to gD(305t) (KD, 2.8×10-6 M). The active ligand concentration decreased on time, however the binding properties of the immobilized receptor were maintained over 5 weeks. © 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved

HPLC resolution of C5 chiral 4,5-dihydro-1,4-benzodiazepines: Stereochemical characterization and enantioselective GABA(A) receptor binding
HPLC resolution on chiral stationary phases has been successfully employed to obtain single enantiomers of C5 chiral 4,5-dihydro-1,4-benzodiazepines and to determine the enantiomeric composition of the collected stereoisomeric fractions. The absolute configuration of the prevailing enantiomer has been assigned on the basis of the circular dichroism spectra, as compared with that of the structural analogue (5R)- and (SS)-dihydrodiazepam. The single enantiomers, assayed for their binding to the central nervous system receptor, showed relatively low affinity but significant differences in displacing radioactively labelled flunitrazepam from specific benzodiazepine site. GABA shift experiments allowed the classification of these benzodiazepines as partial agonist or antagonist. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
