Learner Variations in Communication Strategies : A Study of Japanese, Chinese and American Paraphrasing Techniques in English and Their Application to Task-Based Grammar Instruction
This study investigated how speakers with different L1 backgrounds (Japanese, Chinese and English) would cope with the situation where they had a lexical difficulty in oral English discourse. A total of fifteen subjects participated in the study, consisting of a taped inteview. They were asked to pretend to be tourists who did not recall the word for 'aquarium,' while the interviewer assumed to be a police officer. Each interviewee had to manage to have the officer understand the destination by utilizing such communication strategies (CSs) as "paraphrasing," or "word coinage" in order to express the meaning of 'aquarium.' These conversations were all transcribed to see national variations as well as personal varieties with comparisons made between individual subjects in terms of word choice, length of speech, frequency of particular interjections or phrases, and clarity of speech. In this paper, the author proposes the application of the results to task-based grammar instruction in ESL/EFL classrooms
HTML & CSS: The Good Parts
HTML and CSS are the workhorses of web design, and using them together to build consistent, reliable web pages requires both skill and knowledge. The task is more difficult if you're relying on outdated, confusing, and unnecessary HTML hacks and workarounds. Author Ben Henick shows you how to avoid those traps by going beyond the standard tips, tricks, and techniques to connect the underlying theory and design of HTML and CSS to your everyday work habits. With this practical book, you'll learn how to work with these tools far more effectively than is standard practice for most web developer

A Confederate Biography: The Cruise of the CSS Shenandoah
In A Confederate Biography Dwight Sturtevant Hughes chronicles the journey of the cruiser CSS Shenandoah: both geographically as it traversed every one of the earth’s oceans except the Antarctic, but also emotionally; through the personal, political, and ideological experience of the men who served on her. Hughes quotes the famed captain of the CSS Alabama Raphael Semmes on page 1 that “The cruise of a ship is a biography. The ship becomes a personification”, the author himself stating that a ship can be “a central character in a life story through which we view more clearly our ancestors, their epoch, and their momentous war”. This broader lens beyond the cruise’s pure military effect touches such issues as international law and diplomacy, public relations, command relationships, and faith (whether in god, the cause, or even fellow crewmates)
Modern Airline Pilots\u27 Quandary: Standard Operating Procedures—to Comply or Not to Comply
Modern airline pilots are tasked every flight with the safe and efficient operation of highly automated airliners in today’s complicated global and economic environments. Airlines have developed standard operating procedures (SOP) for normal, abnormal, and emergency operations. These procedures serve as a script for crews to follow. These procedures are designed by airlines to ensure that aircraft are operated in the (1) most safe, (2) most efficient, and (3) most on-time manner. For the most part pilots will comply with SOP, but when they (1) don9t agree with SOP, (2) don9t understand SOP or the risks associated with not complying with SOP, or (3) don9t feel adequately trained to know what SOP is, it is difficult to motivate them to comply. Airlines have the means to measure compliance through Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) and Line Operations Safety Audit (LOSA). The purpose of this research is to determine if increased understanding, knowledge and awareness of the risk of noncompliance with SOP increase airline pilots’ compliance with SOP. This research explores data from line checks at a major US airline that was gathered in pursuit of understanding what drives SOP compliance. Baseline data was gathered and analyzed to determine the top 12 noncompliant items. The airline provided training during the Human Factors module in each pilots recurrent training on Pilot Intentional Non Compliance (PINC). The training including developing pilots’ understanding that while most Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) reports grant pilots immunity from legal action, if a violation is labeled PINC, ASAP protections do not apply. Further line checks were conducted after the pilots received the PINC training. The top 12 noncompliant items from the pre-PINC training group were compared to the same 12 items in the post-PINC training group. Significant improvement in SOP compliance was found in six of the 12 items tested. The results established that training pilots on the risk of PINC did significantly increase SOP compliance
De los acuerdos del diálogo del 2005 para salvar la CSS.
The Panama Social Security Fund (CSS for its acronym in Spanish), an institution of great importance to all Panamanians, has been facing structural problems that threaten both its efficiency and its survival. In 2005, a national dialogue was established to "save" the CSS. As a result of this dialogue, Law 51 of December 27, 2005 was signed. In this article, the author comments on the details of that meeting, providing elements that, after almost two decades, remain in force, because the CSS continues to face a serious risk.

Energy Efficacy to Score Organic Refuses Pretreatment Process for Hydrogen Anaerobic Production
The present paper reports the results of experimental tests on hydrogen production under Anaerobic Digestion (AD) in order to verify the efficacy of several pretreatment processes. The majority of carbon in Organic Wastes (OW) could be present in form of carbohydrates, celluloses or lignocelluloses, with different degree of digestibility. Three types of waste were tested with different C structures to have a large representation of the OW. The selected wastes were: Sweet Product Residue (SPR), confectionary residue taken from the market after the expiry date, Organic Waste Market (OWM) refuses from a local fruit and vegetable market and Coffee Seed Skin (CSS) a waste of coffee production plant. Several pretreatment processes have been tested: chemical, thermal, ultrasonic and a combination of the afore mentioned. To score the different pretreatment process, two parameters were used: the efficiency (x ) that takes into account the produced energy compared to the available one embedded in the refuse and the efficacy (h ) that compares the efficiency obtained in using the pretreatment with that obtained without pretreatment. In the case of SPR, the best result was obtained for the basic pretreatment on its own with h =6.3. In the case of OWM, the best results was for a combination of alkaline/thermal processes with h =9.9. Finally, using CSS, the ultrasonic pretreatment resulted the most efficacy, h =5.
