Paleoclimatic context of projected future warming in southern South America

    No full text
This paper describes changes of near-surface air temperature in southern South America from the Last Glacial Maximum (~ 21,000 years before present) to the end of the twenty-first century based on PMIP3-CMIP5 model simulations. The study shows modeled time evolution of temperature highlighting how different the projected future warming will be with respect to paleoclimatic changes documented in the region. In this context, model simulations suggest that the projected twenty-first century warming will be markedly higher than the change of temperature registered between the mid-Holocene (~ 6000 years before present) and the present. Even more, the regional warming projected by the following 60–80 years might be almost similar to or even higher than the pronounced increment of temperature developed between the Last Glacial Maximum and the present. This past/future comparison provides a new picture of the unusual warming expected for the following decades in southern South America in the context of climate changes developed through the last ca. 21,000 years.Fil: Berman, Ana Laura. Differences between Last Glacial Maximum and present-day temperature and precipitation in southern South America

    Get PDF
This paper is the first analysis of differences between Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and present climates in southern South America considering the state-of-the-art PMIP3 paleoclimatic models. The study is focused on characteristics of temperature and precipitation over the portion of the continent to the south of 20°S at both sides of the Andes Cordillera. Results demonstrate that model outputs coincide with glacial conditions inferred from the very few paleorecords available in the region. Consequently, these models are a valuable tool for inferring additional conditions in areas where there is a lack of proxy information allowing the reconstruction of the past climate at regional scales. The analyzed PMIP3 models expose an LGM cooling of ∼2-5 °C throughout the year over almost all southern South America but differences are even more pronounced in areas around the southern Andes. Models also suggest that LGM precipitation was substantially lower than present over the portion of southern South America to the east of the Andes inferring reductions of ∼20–30% with respect to present-day values in subtropical areas and ∼40–50% in the southern tip of the continent.Fil: Berman, Ana Laura. On the variability of seasonal temperature in southern South America

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to investigate different aspects of the seasonal-to-interannual temperature variability in Eastern Patagonia, the southernmost area of South America, east of the Andes Cordillera. Homogenous regions of seasonal variability and the atmospheric circulation patterns associated with warm and cold conditions in each of them are described in this study. Relationships between temperature in Eastern Patagonia and that registered in other areas of southern South America are also addressed. Results show that the northern and southern areas of Eastern Patagonia have different temperature variability in summer and autumn whereas the temperature variability tends to be more homogeneous within the region during winter and spring. Warm (cold) conditions in the northern areas are associated with reinforced (weakened) westerlies in summer, winter and spring whereas northerly (southerly) advections of warm (cold) air toward the region produce such conditions in autumn. Temperature in the southern portion of Eastern Patagonia is affected by anticyclonic (cyclonic) anomalies that enhance (reduce) the incoming solar radiation and induce reinforced (weakened) westerlies promoting warm (cold) conditions in the region. Furthermore, cyclonic (anticyclonic) anomalies at subpolar latitudes hinder (favor) outbreaks of cold air increasing (decreasing) the temperature over areas of Eastern Patagonia. The circulation anomalies associated with warm (cold) conditions in Eastern Patagonia also promote cold (warm) conditions over areas of northern Argentina, Paraguay and southern Brazil. Consequently, a dipole of temperature is detected in southern South America with centers of opposite sign over these regions.Fil: Berman, Ana Laura. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Tropical Pacific interactions in the WCRP-CMIP3 multi-model dataset

The ability of numerical models in reproducing the observed statistical links between the sea surface temperature of central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean is analysed in this paper. Significant links in the whole spectrum of frequency were studied for models of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP-CMIP3/IPCC-AR4) using the methodology of wavelet coherence. During the second half of the twentieth century, in-phase or quasi-in-phase links in oscillations of 2–6 years, a lack of relation in oscillations of 8–12 years and time lagged links in the longest periodicities are detected in the observed dataset. Some of the analysed models are able to reproduce the observed relationships in oscillations shorter than 6 years and few of them also reproduce the lacks of significant relation in the band of 8–12 years. On the other hand, all models have serious problems representing the observed time lagged links in the longest waves. The analysis shows that climate models are still unable to reproduce specific features of tropical Pacific interactions with potential effect on the Southern Hemisphere atmospheric circulation and, in particular, the South American climatic variability.Fil: Berman, Ana Laura. Last millennium climate changes over the Antarctic Peninsula and southern Patagonia in CESM-LME simulations: differences between Medieval Climate Anomaly and present-day temperatures

    No full text
This paper describes differences between Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) and present-day temperatures in the area composed of the Antarctic Peninsula, southern Patagonia, and the surrounding southern oceans. The investigation is conducted with the simulation results from the Community Earth System Model Last Millennium Ensemble (CESM-LME) considering the impact of each natural (volcanic activity and solar variability) and anthropogenic (greenhouse gas, ozone-aerosols and land use/land cover) individual forcing relative to the full forced simulations. Model results show generalized warming during the MCA in the study area. However, the simulated MCA temperatures are significantly colder than present-day mean values due to the influence of increased atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations since the beginning of the modern Industrial Era in the ∼1850s. In fact, model runs in which only natural forcings were applied show that, in the absence of greenhouse gas forcing, present-day temperatures in the Antarctic Peninsula and southern Patagonia would be lower than or similar to those during the MCA. The study demonstrates the value of paleoclimate proxy–model comparisons but also highlights the limitations of current available proxy information to perform that integration in the study area.Fil: Silvestri, Gabriel Emilio. Variations on the Author

    Get PDF
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
