    Sigrid Nunez has published nine novels, including A Feather on the Breath of God, The Last of Her Kind, The Friend, What Are You Going Through, and, most recently, The Vulnerables. She is also the author of Sempre Susan: A Memoir of Susan Sontag. The Friend, a New York Times bestseller, won the 2018 National Book Award and was a finalist for the 2020 International Dublin Literary Award. Nunez’s other honors include a Whiting Award, a Berlin Prize Fellowship, the Rome Prize in Literature, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her work has been translated into more than thirty languages

    The brilliant New York writer Sigrid Nunez's most recent novel is What Are You Going Through; her previous one, The Friend, (2018) won the National Book Award. She speaks with Tara Menon, of the Harvard English department, and author of a terrific article about Sigrid Nunez in the Sewanee Review. The conversation ranges widely and then plunges into depths. Because life is defined by grief and mourning, so too are my novels, says Nunez. She thinks her upbringing with immigrant parents who felt adrift from their homeland and her own "failure" as a dancer (recounted in her 1995 debut novel, A Feather on the Breath of God ) are the ferment from which her vocation as a writer arose. The question of genre is tossed around: "fictional memoir" perhaps, which gets confused (insultingly, Tara thinks!) with auto-fiction. But Sigrid is fascinated by establishing a reality that is entirely made-up ("not a single friend angry!"), yet also documentary in nature. Perhaps the best tag for her work is "essay novel": that allows one to do what Javier Marias calls "literary thinking." And there's a wonderfully non-Pavlovian answer to the treat question: sometimes you can just have the whiskey

    Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer (CMUT) have been subject to research by several research groups during the last two decades. Despite many potential advantages over traditional piezoelectric ultrasound transducers, the CMUT technology has not yet made a proper commercial breakthrough. One issue which we believe need more investigation is the control of the acoustic crosstalk, both through the silicon substrate and through the adjacent fluid medium. The work presented in this thesis concerns the modeling of immersed CMUT arrays and the investigation of two different acoustic crosstalk effects which may harm the transducer response. The CMUT array is modeled with an analytical model describing the motion of the single acoustically isolated CMUT cell as a combination of free acoustic vibration modes. Several CMUT cells may be connected to form larger elements, and the vibration modes of adjacent CMUTs are coupled through the fluid outside, by an acoustic impedance matrix. In addition, the model may also include the motion of the silicon substrate and the in uence from the source impedance of the electronics. The first crosstalk effect which we focus on in this work, is the generation of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) along the surface of the silicon substrate supporting the CMUT array. If the SAWs are not damped in any way, they may couple to waves in the fluid at certain steering angles, and cause a drop in transmission eciency at these angles. In the presented simulation we show that the silicon substrate must be limited in thickness in order for the backing material to be able to damp the SAWs. If the CMUT array is mounted on top of a stack of silicon substrates containing transmit and receive circuitry, the thickness and composition of both the bonding materials and the silicon substrates must be taken into account. We have compared three different bonding techniques, surface liquid interdi usion (SLID) bonding, anisotropic conductive adhesive (ACA) and direct fusion bonding, and we show that fusion bonding is the technique which is best suited for high frequency CMUT arrays with several IC chips underneath. The penetration depth of the SAWs is frequency dependent, and we show that a high frequency CMUT array with center frequency around 30 MHz, stacked on top of three circuit layers, should have a total silicon thickness below 100 m. If the acoustic backing material instead is placed between the CMUT array and the rst circuit chip, other bonding techniques than fusion bonding may also be used, and the thicknesses of the IC chips are no longer of importance. However, the transmission of the electric signal through or around the backing layer might be a challenge. The other crosstalk effect which has been investigated in this thesis, is the inter-element coupling at the CMUT- fluid interface. We refer to this effect as dispersive guided modes, and show that the excitation of local resonances in the interface region may affect the overall transmission from the array at frequencies well within the 100 % bandwidth of the transducer. These waves are not damped by the acoustic backing material. Many CMUT designers choose to have larger distances between CMUT cells in neighbor elements than between CMUTs within an element. We denote this as double periodicity. We have compared the e ect of the dispersive guided modes in arrays with the same distance between all the CMUT cells, regardless if they are in the same or in adjacent elements (denoted as single periodicity), and arrays with double periodicity. Simulations show that the response from arrays with double periodicity is affected by the crosstalk even at broadside radiation, whereas the effect becomes apparent at o -axis beam steering for arrays with single periodicity. Through simulations, we have shown that it is possible to mechanically damp the dispersive guided modes substantially by introducing a lossy coating material of a few micrometer thickness. The PDMS material RTV516 from GE Silicones seems to have material properties which are well suited for such damping. We have also shown that introducing a low electric source impedance in the transmit electronics may reduce the e ect of the local CMUT- uid resonances on the detected signal.PhD i elektronikk og telekommunikasjonPhD in Electronics and Telecommunicatio

Сіґрід Унсет розвивала жанр родинної саги, зображуючи сучасність крізь призму Середньовіччя ХІІІ століття північної Норвегії. Роман-трилогія «Крістін, дочка Лавранса» – яскравий приклад історичного родинного роману, який демонструє зміну сімейного та суспільного укладу на тлі середньовічної доби. За цей твір письменниця удостоїлася найвищої літературної нагороди – Нобелівської премії.The article deals with Sigrid Undset, one of the three Nobel Prize winners of Norwegian literature, and reviews her main novels. Sigrid Undset is one of the famous writers in Scandinavia and Northern Europe, but because her novels were not translated, she is still unknown in Ukraine. The author lived during the Second World War and became an example of a strong individuality and powerful writer. Sigrid Undset began as a writer of novels on women’s life and their position in society. She continued and developed the genre of family saga, describing the modern Norway through the prism of the Middle Ages of the thirteenth century in Northern Norway. The trilogy “Kristin, Lavrans’ Daughter” is one of the main novels of Undset and a vivid example of historical family novel that demonstrates the social and the family changes in the structure of society in the Middle Ages. This novel describes the life of a woman who lived in a typical patriarchal family in Northern Norway and changed her position from a dependent person into a powerful and independent one. For this novel, the writer won the highest literary award, the Nobel Prize, and was included in the canon of Norwegian literature. The genre of family saga is one of oldest genres in Scandinavian literature, and at the same time, one of the most popular one even in the 21st century. The works of Sigrid Undset have produced a great influence on contemporary Norwegian literature, and nowadays we can see a new interpretation of historical themes and the genre of family saga in novels of Vera Henriksen and Tom Egeland

    Sigrid Undset's Kristin Lavransdatter in Czech Translations

    The subject of this master thesis is a comparison of Czech translations of Sigrid Undset's trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-22). The novel was translated by Emil Walter (1931-39), Jan Pollák (1948), Dagmar Chvojková-Pallasová (1963 a 1999) and Jiřina Vrtišová in collaboration with Radko Kejzlar (1977). The aim of the thesis was to find out if the methods used by the translators correspond with the contemporaneous trends in translation and if there are any signs of censorship in the translations. The general part of the thesis focuses on the author, the reception of her work, the analysis of the original text and the contemporaneous trends in translation. The translations were compared and analyzed in the practical part. Based on the analysis, we found out that only the methods of two translators correspond with the contemporaneous trends. There were also signs of censorship found.Předmětem této diplomové práce je srovnání českých překladů románové trilogie Kristina Vavřincova (Kristin Lavransdatter, 1920-1922) Sigrid Undsetové. Román přeložili Emil Walter (1931-39), Jan Pollák (1948), Dagmar Chvojková-Pallasová (1963 a 1999) a Jiřina Vrtišová ve spolupráci s Radko Kejzlarem (1977). Cílem práce bylo zjistit, zda metody překladatelů odpovídají dobovým překladatelským tendencím a zda se v překladech objevují cenzurní zásahy. Obecná část práce se věnuje autorce, recepci jejího díla, analýze originálu a dobovým překladatelským tendencím. V praktické části je provedeno srovnání a analýza překladů. Na základě analýzy jsme zjistili, že dobovým tendencím odpovídají pouze metody dvou překladatelů.
