I defend her claim that belief’s objects are, in some important sense, not the bearers of truth and falsity, discuss her dispositionalism about belief, and argue it’s a good fit with the idea that belief’s objects are Russellian states of affairs.

Van koolstof tot diamant : de levenskunst van Marcus Aurelius en het diamantweg boeddhisme
No full textIn deze scriptie heb ik antwoord gezocht op de vraag hoe de levenskunst van Marcus Aurelius en van het diamantweg boeddhisme zich tot elkaar kunnen verhouden in theoretisch en praktisch opzicht. Dit heb ik gedaan aan de hand van vijf deelvragen. Wat steeds belangrijk is tijdens deze scriptie, is het aantonen van het belang van kritisch lezen, omdat ogenschijnlijke overeenkomsten tussen de twee levenskunsten toch verschillen blijken te zijn.
Ten eerste heb ik levenskunst gedefinieerd. Vervolgens heb ik de levenskunst van Marcus Aurelius en van het diamantweg boeddhisme behandeld. In hoofdstuk vier komen de overeenkomsten en verschillen aan bod, en worden enkele vooronderstellingen weerlegd. In hoofdstuk vijf stel ik de vraag of op basis van deze verschillen deze twee levenskunsten met elkaar verzoenbaar zijn, zo ja, onder welke voorwaarden. Het antwoord op deze deelvraag is dat deze verzoenbaar zijn, mits zij op twee verschillende terreinen in iemands leven van belang zijn. Zo kan bijvoorbeeld Marcus Aurelius zeer inspirerend zijn voor het vormen van een visie op hoe het sociale leven in de gemeenschap vormgegeven zou moeten zijn, en het diamantweg boeddhisme voor de spirituele invulling van de levenskunst. Door dit onderscheid te maken, loopt men niet vast op de verschillen tussen beide levenskunsten en kunnen zij beide een bijdrage leveren aan de levenskunst. In de conclusie heb ik weergegeven dat beide levenskunsten zich voor mij tot elkaar verhouden als de kleine beklimbare berg van Marcus Aurelius en de grotere, meer uitdagende, maar moeilijke berg van het diamantweg boeddhisme
