The privateering activities of a Swiss merchant, Benoit Bourcard, at Nantes, 1793-1814
Crowhurst Patrick. The Minarets of Sanaa
In his mid-eighteenth-century poem titledThe Mosques of Sanaa,¹ the author Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Khafanji tells the tale of a visit paid by the Great Mosque of the city to the tiny ʿAddil Mosque, located in the former Ottoman suburb of Bir al-ʿAzab. The Great Mosque is personified as a character of wealth and distinction, and impoverished ʿAddil makes a desperate plea for improved conditions of his neglected state. In response, the Great Mosque forecasts that one day ʿAddil will be endowed with all the necessary amenities, including his own minaret andmuʾazzin(person who performs the call to prayer).²..

The French Journalist René Marchand: Some Facts about “Soviet Russia’s Friend”
This article is devoted to the life, political views and activities of Le Figaro correspondent René Marchand (1888-1962). Marchand became widely known in Soviet Russia thanks to his open letter to French President Raymond Poincaré in 1918, which criticized the republic’s policy vis-à-vis Moscow as well as acts of sabotage by the Allies. The missive became an important episode in the confrontation between the Entente’s special services and the young Bolshevik regime. French and Russian historians tend to argue that the French journalist’s sympathies turned to socialism and Bolshevism in 1918. However, they generally pay little attention the French Left in Soviet Russia. Based on research in French diplomatic and military archives at Courneuve and Vincennes, respectively, the author concludes that René Marchand was a multi-faceted individual and the nature of his sympathies to the Bolsheviks remains questionabl
Abstract 5503: Interplay between the transcription factors PRRX1 and FOXM1 in pancreatic cancer
Abstract
Introduction: We have identified previously the Paired Related Homeobox 1 gene (Prrx1) as a key regulator of embryonic ductal development, acinar-to-ductal metaplasia (ADM) and pre-cancerous lesion (PanIN)/pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) progression (Reichert M. et al Genes & Dev 2013). We discovered an isoform switch between PRRX1A and PRRX1B occurring in EMT-MET plasticity in pancreatic tumorigenesis (EMT) and metastatic colonization of the liver (MET) (Takano S. et al Genes & Dev 2016). The transcription factor FOXM1 is also implicated in EMT of pancreatic cancer cells. Interestingly, both transcription factors, FOXM1 and PRRX1, are overexpressed in PDAC. The aim of this study was to investigate if PRRX1, specifically its isoforms, might interact with FOXM1, to regulate gene transcription in pancreatic cancer.
Methods: Experiments were performed in human pancreatic cancer cells (PANC1, MIA PaCa2 and BxPC3), and HEK293T cells. Epitope-tagged PRRX1 and FOXM1 proteins (wild type or deletion mutants) were either transiently or stably expressed in these cells. Immunoprecipitation and western blot were performed to evaluate potential interaction between PRRX1 and FOXM1. As a functional readout, the TnC and 6xFOXM1 luciferase reporters were used to measure Tenascin C and FOXM1 transcriptional activities.
Results: Immunoprecipitation of tagged-PRRX1 or endogenous FOXM1 showed co-binding of both PRRX1 isoforms (A and B) with FOXM1 in pancreatic cancer cells. We further characterized this interaction using deletion mutants of PRRX1 C-terminal region, FOXM1 binds to the 200-222 amino acid region of PRRX1. Similarly, using deletion mutants of the FOXM1 N-terminal region we mapped PRRX1 binding to the winged helix DNA binding domain of FOXM1. Interestingly, we also observed co-binding of HA-tagged PRRX1A with either Flag-tagged PRRX1A or PRRX1B suggesting homo and heterodimerization of the PRRX1 isoforms. Next, we found that co-expression of PRRX1 and FOXM1 cooperatively induced transcriptional activity of a known PRRX1 target gene, Tenascin C. Furthermore, co-expression of PRRX1A and FOXM1 cooperatively induced FOXM1 transcriptionnal activity. FOXM1 has been reported to regulate Wnt signaling in glioblastomas (Zhang N. et al. Cancer Cell 2011). Given the importance of Wnt signaling in early pancreatic carcinogenesis, we observed co-binding of PRRX1 and FOXM1 with beta-catenin.
Conclusion: Our results provides new insights in the interaction of PRRX1 and FOXM1 with functional activation of FOXM1 mediated transcriptional activity, and potential regulation of the Wnt pathway.

Fertilization: trade-offs between manure abatement and plant productivity
In 2005, 30% of the Flemish farms faced a manure excess, while at aggregated level still 9.7% of the emission rights were unused. This means that, despite the various possibilities, Flemish farmers do not succeed in an effective exchange of manure between farms. In current paper is shown how inorganic fertilizer use influences the use and exchange of organic nitrogen. Because of the mutual interdependency between organic and inorganic nitrogen emission rights (or quota), inorganic nitrogen use limits the emission rights for organic nitrogen. Utilisation of these emission rights are analysed as a trade-offs choice between plant productivity (use of inorganic nitrogen) and manure disposal, as the major abatement alternative of manure production. Farmers still prefer inorganic fertilizers because of their effect on plant productivity and income. However, by changing the quota rent of organic nitrogen, the fertilization behaviour can be influenced. A higher quota rent of organic nitrogen would increase the use of manure. This trade-off behaviour seriously influences effectiveness of policies. When the objective is to lower the total nitrogen use, a mere reduction of organic quota can partially be counteracted by a higher inorganic nitrogen use. When the objective is to better spread the manure, increasing the quota rent for deficit farms will increase their acceptance of manure.manure abatement, nutrient emission rights, Tobit model, Crop Production/Industries,
Du théâtre en chanson ? : La transfolklorisation chez les collaborateurs du Carillon canadien de Charles Marchand
The contribution of folk-singer Charles Marchand and his “Carillon canadien” to the history of the chanson in Québec before Madame Bolduc deserves to be better understood. First, the article proposes a biographical update about this overlooked artist and his professional networks (magazines, sheet music, concerts, festivals, records, radio broadcastings). Second, the author introduces the new concept of “transfolklorisation” in order to analyze Charles Marchand’s chanson performing practices that blend elements from music and theater. The “Carillon canadien” consisted in French Canadian folk-singing, operatic vocals, Montmartre café-concert influences and a taste for French modern theater.
