Decip me or I reveal you: the author for Foucault and Chartier

    No full text
This article seeks to tension the author\u27s conceptions based on the reflections of Michel Foucault (1926-1984) and Roger Chartier (1945-). Therefore, it presents what we call the authorship problem, exploring the various faces of the author in a historical perspective and in the present time. From this, we follow the main concepts of Michel Foucault, for whom the notion of author plays a central role in the individualization present in the history of knowledge, since the return to the genealogy of any concept, literary genre or philosophy overvalues the relationship of a subject author and his work. Then, we look at Roger Chartier\u27s thinking about the author. About thirty years after Foucault\u27s lecture at the French Philosophy Society, Chartier is invited by the same institution to revisit the author\u27s theme. Chartier\u27s (2012) return to the question is justified, according to himself, by the rectification of chronologies pointed out by Foucault (2009) and which support his argument. Finally, we conclude with the possible intersections arising from the two thinkers. It is possible to draw a parallel of what Chartier (2001) called social place with the modes of circulation of texts in the sociocultural sphere, which constitutes the author-function proposed by Foucault (2009). Only through a social place, understood as a space in which social dynamics are revealed from the values of that same society, is it possible to emerge the author as a subject of speech. In this case, it is a speech symbolically valued from the same socially circulating values

Entrevista a Roger Chartier

In this brief interview, the French historian Roger Chartier (Lyon, 1945) covers a series of concepts related to three of the major areas to which he has devoted most of his academic work over the last four decades. The first deals with the figure of the author and in it a conceptual arc is authenticated that goes from new technologies applied to literary production and changes in authorial models to a return to the clas-sics. The second axis focuses on the book as a support for texts and is an attempt to cover the different materialities of said object (physical, electronic or audiobook books). The third axis, in this case a single broad question, reflects the relationships between the historiographical and literary sciences, how they intersect, and ways to approach the historicity of textsNesta breve entrevista, o historiador francês Roger Chartier (Lyon, 1945) percorre uma série de conceitos relacionados a três das grandes áreas às quais dedicou a maior parte de sua produção acadêmica nas últimas quatro décadas. An Investigation on the application of DBD plasma actuators as pressure sensors

    No full text
This paper investigates the possibility of using a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma aerodynamic actuator to measure ambient pressure conditions. Previous studies of DBD actuators have focused on the use of plasma as a flow control device, which have highlighted the change in the plasma formation at low ambient pressure and the mechanism for plasma wind production. The modification of the plasma formation process has significant influence on the plasma driving circuit and therefore can be used to extract data regarding the local flow conditions. The time scales of the plasma formation orders of magnitude smaller than that of the flow structures. Sufficient sensitivity of the plasma driving circuit to the ambient pressure implies that this phenomenon could prove useful for application of this technology as a pressure sensor, for relatively high bandwidth measurements.Benjamin J. The effectiveness of project-based learning on net-generation aerospace engineering students

    No full text
This paper presents an analysis of project based learning for today’s engineering students, of the ‘net-generation’. The learning attributes of the so-called ‘net-generation’, being characterised by their exposed to computer technology throughout their childhood development, generate specific challenges to educators, as traditional education techniques are less effective. Independent learning and active collaborative learning are critical components of the project based learning technique, which may be an effective educational tool for academics to exploit. These approaches match the preferred learning style of ‘netgeneration’ students who exhibit strong preference for independent learning, group work and the use information and communication technologies. This investigation is supported by a case study, of a project conducted by final year students, in the School of Mechanical Engineering, at The University of Adelaide.

Historien - eller om at læse tiden

In this article the author reflects on the supposed ‘crisis of history’ which obsessed historians in the 1980s and 1990s. From these reflections the article seeks to provide answers to questions of ‘what history is’ between the definitions as narrative and knowledge. By analyzing the ideas of many intellectual historians such as Michel de Certeau and Reinhard Koselleck, Chartier contextualizes fundamentalhistoriographical knowledge with more recent trends such as microhistory and globalism in order to arrive at a proposal of history as specifically capable of recognizing and articulating different times imbricated in historical moments
