    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Solving heat conduction problems with phase-change under the heat source term approach and the element-free Galerkin formulation

    The present work has been conducted in order to introduce an alternative solution for heat transfer problems with phase-change and moving boundaries, via the element-free Galerkin (EFG) method. In this novel approach, the phase-change non-linearity is addressed under the heat source term methodology. For this purpose, the global weak-form of the internal energy balance for such a non-linear transient heat transfer problem has been developed by including the latent heat as a source vector. In order to prove the reliability of this approach, the EFG formulation has been adapted to the solution of a 1-D alloy solidification benchmark problem. The suitability and potentialities of this novel approach have also been depicted in the solution of a variable domain (moving boundary) solidification problem, by considering the start-up stage of a round billet steel continuous casting process as an applied example. Results have revealed that this technique can be successfully used to deal appropriately with the marked non-linearity related to the fusion latent heat release in heat transfer problems with phase change, and its straightforward implementation leads to both accurate and stable numerical results.Fil: Álvarez Hostos, Juan Carlos.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Implementation of a standard stream-upwind stabilization scheme in the element-free Galerkin based solution of advection-dominated heat transfer problems during solidification in direct chill casting processes

    The present work has been conducted in order to propose an alternative solution for the heat transfer problem involved in direct-chill casting (DCC)processes, employing the element-free Galerkin (EFG)method. The internal energy balance has been solved on the basis of this global weak formulation under an Eulerian description. The EFG formulation has been adapted to a three-dimensional steady thermal problem on an aluminum alloy slab. Additionally, the advection dominated problem involved in the casting direction during the liquid-solid phase change has been stabilized by extending adequately the implementation of the stream upwind Petrov?Galerkin (SUPG)scheme to the EFG formulation. A detailed explanation concerning the suitable numerical procedure to achieve such an extension, has also been provided. The feasibility and reliability of this novel approach has been depicted by comparison with both finite element method (FEM)and finite volume method (FVM)based solutions. The results have demonstrated that a proper extension of the SUPG scheme to the EFG method allows the achievement of stable numerical solutions, when predicting the three-dimensional temperature distribution during the phase-change heat transfer phenomena involved in slab DCC processes.Fil: Álvarez Hostos, Juan Carlos.     Implementation of standard penalty procedures for the solution of incompressible Navier–Stokes equations, employing the element-free Galerkin method

    The present work introduces an alternative implementation of the element-free Galerkin method (EFGM) for the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The linear momentum balance and mass conservation equations have been developed on the basis of this global weak formulation. The weak forms of both equations have been coupled by means of two standard penalty procedures, which have been previously formulated and successfully employed in mesh-based numerical techniques such as the finite element method (FEM). These include the consistent penalty method (CPM) and reduced integration penalty method (RIPM). A detailed explanation concerning the characteristics inherent to the implementation of both penalty procedures in the EFGM based solutions for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, has also been provided. The resulting systems of equations have been adapted to the solution of different well-known incompressible flow benchmark problems. The feasibility and reliability of extending the implementation of these penalty procedures to the EFGM based solutions has been verified by comparison with the numerical techniques proposed and the results reported by other researchers. Results have revealed that this technique could be successfully used in the solution of Newtonian incompressible flow problems under the aforementioned penalty approaches.Fil: Álvarez Hostos, Juan Carlos.     We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
