Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
S-punti di viSta»: adolescence and visual narratives in the province of Milan
These photos are the result of a workshop held at CPIA (Provincial Center for Adult Education) in Cinisello Balsamo (Milan), from March to December 2018. This work reflects on the imagery of twelve kids coming from different countries and backgrounds. Participants developed a path for research, narration and analysis of the contemporary overuse of images, taking their distances from it with the help of an alternative medium: disposable cameras
Autogenous platelet-rich plasma in combination with bovine-derived hydroxyapatite xenograft for treatment of a cystic lesion of the jaw
In the last 5 years, many studies about autogenous platelet-rich plasma have been undertaken pointing out its regenerative and reparative properties on tissues. The features of this product are an attribute of platelet cells, which, after cellular interactions, release growth factors. These molecules promote tissue healing and also induce cellular regeneration. Bone is a dynamic tissue subject to balanced processes of bony formation and reabsorption; autologous platelet gel or concentrate (PRP) can be used alone or in association with bony graft for the treatment of bony defect, cystic lesions, alveolar bone defects, and periodontal pockets. Its application fields are oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and general surgery, and it can be applied particularly in patients with coagulation diseases. In our experience, a giant cystic lesion of the jaw was treated with PRP and granules of bovine-derived hydroxyapatite xenograft to enhance bony regeneration and promote tissue healing
Warm up and postactivaction potentiation (PAP): a very topical debate
The relationship between the way to organize the warm-up and the subsequent expected performances is a very relevant topic, because it provides important deductions to be transferred into practice by the coaches.
The coaches demand this from Sports Science research.
Today the application of PAP in fact has been largely popularized through the application of complex training. The principle is that PAP will allow an athlete to train at power outputs exceeding their normal capabilities and therefore increase the potential training adaptations. The coaches and the athletes expect improved high-intensity performance following warm-up, and postactivation potentiation is assumed to contribute to this improvement. However, the scientific evidence supporting this assumption is incomplete. PAP is known to result from prior muscle activation, and should enhance maximal effort contractions of very short duration. Our reflection on this theme and on the type of exercises chosen by Gil and colleagues aims to broaden the discussion on the topic to consider the ways in which the ballistic exercises (BE) are performed.
And a further reflection must then extend to the time needed for PAP to be effectively exploited4. The BE is widely recognized in literature as a useful method for the PAP phenomeno
Measure inducing classification and regression trees for functional data
We propose a tree-based algorithm (μCART) for classification and regression problems in the context of functional data analysis, which allows to leverage measure learning and multiple splitting rules at the node level, with the objective of reducing error while retaining the interpretability of a tree. For each internal node, our main contribution is the idea of learning a weighted functional (Formula presented.) space by means of constrained convex optimization, which is then used to extract multiple weighted integral features from the functional predictors, in order to determine the binary split. The approach is designed to manage multiple functional predictors and/or responses, by defining suitable splitting rules and loss functions that can depend on the specific problem and can also be combined with additional scalar and categorical predictors, as the tree is grown with the original greedy CART algorithm. We focus on the case of scalar-valued functional predictors defined on unidimensional domains and illustrate the effectiveness of our method in both classification and regression tasks, through a simulation study and four real-world applications
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
