    No full text
Albin F. Irzyk was the commander of the 8th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, which liberated Ohrdruf on April 4, 1945. In this interview, he gives the highlights of the division\u27s arrival in Europe, experiences during the Battle of the Bulge, and progression through the Rhineland. En route to Dresden, Irzyk received orders to go to Ohrdruf and look for an underground complex which was thought to hold communications equipment. His division bivouacked outside the town for the night and started to hear reports of bodies. The next morning, Irzyk went into the camp to look around, finding over 300 corpses. He describes his reactions to the camp and how it affected him as a commanding officer. Irzyk retired from the army as a brigadier general and is the author of three books about the U.S. military

Beteendepåverkande åtgärder i planering för ökat kollektivt resande - en studie om Enköpingsprojektet

This paper examines how planning can increase the ridership on public transit by using measures that influence behaviour. This is done by examining the planning process of the new bus network that is to be implemented in the city of Enköping which aims to increase the ridership on city buses. Mobility management is a tool in planning which entails the use of measures to influence peoples’ behaviour and to support sustainable transportation. The paper examines if and how mobility management can be implemented in the planning process of the new bus network. This is done by interviewing actors from Enköping municipality and Region Uppsala that are involved in the planning process and analyzing municipal transport documents. The paper shows that the actors see great value in measures that influence behaviour. However, the two organizations lack methods in working with mobility management. Mobility management has not yet been implemented in the project and is likely to be used as a marketing tool to encourage ridership rather than an integrated part in the planning process. This may not be effective in increasing the ridership since investment in public transit and mobility management must be complemented by actions that makes car-use less attractive

Reform der Tötungsdelikte – Eine unendliche Geschichte? | Gedanken zu Albin Esers Ideen zu einer Neugestaltung der §§ 211 – 213 StGB

Since 1980, Albin Eser presented and co-authored various proposals for the reform of intentional homicide offenses in German criminal law. Yet, the misguided and outdated formulations on murder and manslaughter introduced in the German Penal Code in 1941 still remain in force. The author, in the spirit of Albin Eser’s writings, presents a reform proposal based on a graduated model of aggravated, „normal“, and mitigated instances of intentional homicide. The distinction between these three degrees of homicide relies on a flexible system of aggravating and mitigating circumstances, which relate to the circumstances of the killing and special conflict situations of the perpetrator

Vägen till urbana gator : omvandlingen av transportinfrastruktur i relation till den svenska planeringsprocessen

Urban planning needs to address the future role of transport infrastructure in cities. Due to previous planning ideals, our cities consist of transport networks that stand in conflict with ambitions to create dense and multifunctional urban environments, decrease pollution, and create safe urban space. Here, the urban street is a measure that enables new multifunctional solutions for transport infrastructures. This thesis, therefore, investigates street redevelopment projects in relation to the Swedish planning process, which is assessed through five case studies of street redevelopment projects in Swedish cities. Interviews combined with a desktop study are utilised as methods. The theoretical framework of obduracy and socio-technical transitions is applied to understand the mechanisms behind the hindering- and enabling factors present in the projects.  Our results show that hindering factors exist on the interpersonal scale in the projects between planners and planning departments, internally within the municipalities between planning organisation and politics, and externally between different actor groups such as public and state actors. Hindering factors are also identified in the physical infrastructure and historical context of the streets where older planning ideals still influence the physical and societal preconditions of the street networks. These factors slowed down the planning processes and led to compromises in aim and vision. It is not evident that the formal planning process should change in order to overcome these obstacles. Rather, it is the cooperation and coordination between actors that mainly determines the functionality of the process. Successful strategies in the projects have been; anchoring projects in municipal goals, combining incorporating different urban planning aspects and departments, municipalities as main actors, carefully assessing the location and context and integrating street redevelopment projects with broader development projects

Refined intersection homology on non-Witt spaces

    No full text
We investigate a generalization to non-Witt stratified spaces of the intersection homology theory of Goresky–MacPherson. The second-named author has described the self-dual sheaves compatible with intersection homology, and the other authors have described a generalization of Cheeger's L2 de Rham cohomology. In this paper we first extend both of these cohomology theories by describing all sheaf complexes in the derived category of constructible sheaves that are compatible with middle perversity intersection cohomology, though not necessarily self-dual. Our main result is that this refined intersection cohomology theory coincides with the analytic de Rham theory on Thom–Mather stratified spaces. The word "refined" is motivated by the fact that the definition of this cohomology theory depends on the choice of an additional structure (mezzo-perversity) which is automatically zero in the case of a Witt space

Speaking of Books… Connecting with Faculty through a Campus Author Series

    No full text
A faculty author speaker series is an effective way to build bridges between academic librarians and the teaching faculty, as well as raise the profile of the university library. To explore the challenges and rewards of hosting such a series, this article presents a history of the series “Speaking of Books… Conversations with Campus Authors” at the University of Maryland. It discusses the details of planning and executing author events, in the hope that others can use this information to host their own lecture series. Finally, it presents a few ideas for future directions of the faculty author series.https://southernlibrarianship.icaap.org/content/v10n01/hackman_t01.htm

Looking for Genres on the World Wide Web: Content Analysis of American Author Web Sites

    No full text
Poster and handouts for presentation at American Library Association Annual Conference, Chicago, July 11, 2009.This project entails content analysis of 200 websites for authors commonly taught in university-level American literature survey courses. Using a faceted classification scheme to categorize site content, the researchers explore the extent to which consistency has developed in the scope and content of Web sites for authors in the canon of American literature. The goal is to identify both the full range of unique content on these Web sites and, within that range, the core content elements that comprise the “American Author Web Site” genre. The authors also gathered biographical details on each author, to consider the question of whether Web site content varies by an author’s gender or racial background. Ultimately, the goal is to identify a set of common and/or “best” practices for content and organization of author Web sites that will assist both undergraduate students and advanced researchers looking for author information on the Web, as well as site designers hoping to create quality resources for these users. In the choice of subject, size of the sample, and novelty of the approach, this promises to be a unique project that will interest librarians, web developers, and literature researchers alike.https://drum.lib.umd.edu/handle/1903/941
