No full textThe 'cerco flutuante', a floating trap net, is used by the caiçaras from the southeastern coast of Brazil for artisanal fishing. This technique is part of a set of historical influences that formed the caiçara culture, and it was introduced in Brazil by the Japanese at the beginning of the last century. Fishing with floating nets occurs in Trindade, State of Rio de Janeiro coast, amongst other fishing devices, such as set gillnets, line, ripper jig, and 'bate-bate'. For a period of nine months fish landings were followed in Trindade, at the Praia do Meio and Rancho. The result of 112 fishing trips includes 70 trips (visits) to the cerco, capturing 1973kg of 35 species. Ecological, Cultural, And Economic Approaches To Managing Artisanal Fisheries
No full textApproaches towards the management of artisanal fisheries have been enlightening the scientific literature for approximately the last 20 years. Coming from diverse disciplines such as anthropology, biology, economy, and ecology (especially human ecology), these approaches have dealt with common theory, strategies for cooperation, decision-making models, cultural contexts, and local knowledge. Fishery management depends on an understanding of the interactions between humans and aquatic resources, and in case of indigenous or of native populations, forestry resources are also considered for livelihoods. Acquiring an understanding of the local knowledge about fish and other resources, of collective local arrangements and institutions, of market interactions, and of the decision-making processes of fishers is fundamental for the management of artisanal fisheries. This review includes historical and current approaches associated with the management of artisanal fisheries. These approaches include the following: (a) cultural and human ecological approaches, including ecological models such as optimal foraging theory; (b) institutional approaches, including processes of cooperation associated with local knowledge and institutions; and (c) current ecological-economic propositions towards fishery management, such as payments for environmental services. No full textThis article investigates the folk taxonomy of four artisanal fisheries communities in Ilhabela/SP. The local folk taxonomy shows how these fishermen identify, name and classify fish resources in the environment exploited by them. Forty-two fishermen from four different local communities of Ilhabela were interviewed through a structured questionnaire and photographs of fish species with occurrence for the southeast region of Brazil. Respondents identified the 24 species listed as 50 generic names and 27 binominal specific names, mainly related to aspects of fish species morphology such as color, shape and size. These fish were classified into eight groups according to local criteria related to the morphology, ecology and fishing forms associated with the capture of species. The morphological aspect was identified as the most used feature by respondents to name and classify local fish, followed by ecological aspects such as behavior, diet and habitat. What Do People Think About Pollution? Contributions Of Human Ecology To The Study Of River Pollution With A Focus On Brazil
No full textRiver pollution has been reducing water quality for human consumption and affecting ecological integrity and biodiversity. Notwithstanding the biological focus of many studies addressing river pollution, it also has a relevant social dimension: pollution is caused by people and affects people in turn. The research area of human ecology studies the relationships between people and their environment. The main purpose of this chapter is to provide a brief review of studies on human ecology in Brazil, addressing three major approaches involving river pollution. First, studies of fish consumption by local riverine fishers reveal not only those preferred fish, which people regularly eat, but also the food taboos involving fish, or rules that lead people to avoid or to limit the consumption of certain types of fish A broad survey on fish food taboos among riverine fishers in the Brazilian Amazon shows that people tend to avoid the large piscivorous fish, which are top predators more prone to accumulate toxins. According to an independent study on mercury content in fish from an Amazonian river, some of the tabooed fish are also those showing high mercury content. On the other hand, in an urban river located in southeastern Brazil, people avoid eating bottom-dwelling fish due to increased seasonal levels of organic pollution, which is more noticeable. However, these people do not seem to perceive the danger of mercury pollution and its effect on fish. Such studies can provide indirect insights about water quality and the patterns of human consumption of contaminated fish. Second, some studies address the perception that people have about the ecosystem's integrity, comparing such perception to the literature or biological surveys. One such study shows that local farmers in southeastern Brazil overestimate the water quality and ecological integrity of streams located inside their properties, due to patterns of water use and to the financial opportunity of allowing reforestation on their land. Third, local fishers usually show a detailed knowledge about the behavior and ecology of the exploited fish. Such local knowledge may be a first-hand and invaluable source of information to deal with the biological pollution, or the invasive exotic fish (and other aquatic organisms), which can quickly colonize an aquatic habitat, often with drastic and unknown consequences to the local biological communities. Local Knowledge And Training Towards Management
No full textThe urgency of managing marine resources is based on the fact that half of the world stocks are fully exploited, excluding those stocks that are already depleted. Artisanal fisheries in Brazil, both inland and coastal, are responsible for about half of the country's catches. Therefore, management of local artisanal fisheries is a necessity that provides an additional benefit, considering the observation that decentralization and the use of local ecological knowledge (LEK) in management have given better results than centralized, top-down management. In this study, a third system of knowledge-based on practice and training-is built from the local and scientific systems of knowledge, and a method to accomplish practical steps in local management is shown. Four elements are considered for the process of linking systems towards management: (1) an understanding of the natural environment of the fishery and on the use of natural resources by locals; (2) the knowledge of the marine area used by fishers, i.e., location of fishing spots for each species; (3) the understanding of fisher behavior, e.g., using tools from optimal foraging theory; and (4) the knowledge fishers have of the biology and ecology of species and their LEK, based on studies of the ethnobiology, ethnoecology, and ethnotaxonomy of fish. Considering the availability of publications on topics 1 and 2, illustrative cases are shown using optimal foraging models in Itaipu Beach, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo Bagre, Cananéia, São Paulo, and using common snook, Centropomus undecimalis, as an example for a target species.
