Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Évaluation de la régénération naturelle dans les plantations d'épinettes blanches au bas St-Laurent
Get PDFRÉSUMÉ : Dans l'est du Québec, l'aménagement forestier a profondément altéré les paysages forestiers, transformant ainsi des forêts mixtes avec des structures complexes vers des structures plus homogènes. Aujourd'hui, de nouveaux concepts sylvicoles basés sur les écosystèmes ont vu le jour, et tendent à imiter les perturbations naturelles, et leur application vise à agir sur la dynamique des forêts aménagées. En 2008, un essai sylvicole a été mis en place pour initier une conversion structurelle des plantations d'épinettes blanches (Picea glauca) vers des peuplements inéquiennes ou irréguliers. La première étape de la conversion consiste à effectuer une éclaircie commerciale neutre par dégagement d'arbres élites. Une éclaircie par le bas et un témoin sans aucune intervention font aussi partie du plan expérimental. Des trouées de différentes tailles (0.05ha et 0.01ha) ont également été installées. En 2019 des placettes de régénération ont été intégrées au système existant pour évaluer l'état de la régénération naturelle à la suite de la première éclaircie. La hauteur totale ainsi que l'accroissement annuel de tous les semis régénérés de façon naturelle ont été mesurés dans les placettes de régénération. De nombreuses variables identifiées comme pouvant être altérées par les interventions sylvicoles et pouvant modifier elles-mêmes les conditions de développement des semis ont été mesurées. La lumière, considérée comme un des principaux facteurs agissant sur la régénération, a été quantifiée grâce au rayonnement photosynthétiquement actif. Les traitements ont eu un effet sur la compétition exercée par les arbres matures entourant les placettes de régénération. La compétition a aussi joué un rôle important dans le développement des semis, puisqu'elle a été le facteur principal altérant le rayonnement photosynthétiquement actif. Ce dernier a été une ressource majeure dans le développement des semis de sapin baumier (Abies balsamea). Les trouées de 0.05 ha ont eu un effet indirectement négatif sur les semis, la grande quantité de lumière atteignant le sol favorisant le développement de végétation compétitrice au détriment du sapin et de l'épinette blanche. L'utilisation de l'éclaircie par dégagement d'arbres élites (100 arbres élites/ha) et l'éclaircie par le bas se sont révélées intéressantes quant à la gestion de la lumière et de la compétition dans le sous-bois, et donc dans le renouvellement des futures cohortes en plantation. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en français : Régénération naturelle, épinette blanche, sapin baumier, éclaircie par dégagement d'arbres élites, aménagement écosytémique. --
ABSTRACT : In eastern Quebec, forest management has deeply altered natural stands, transforming much of the complex/heterogeneous forests to homogeneous even-aged stands. New sylvicultural methods are being implemented in order to better mimic natural disturbances. In 2008, a silvicultural trial was carried in white spruce plantations (Picea glauca) in order to initiate their conversion from even-aged to uneven-aged/irregular stands by using thinning from below or early crop tree release with or without gaps of various sizes. In 2019, regeneration plots were placed in the permanent plots and in the gaps, in order to assess the abundance and growth of natural regeneration. Total height and the annual increment were measured for each seedling in the regeneration plots. Important factors that are influenced by the sylvicultural treatments were also measured. The amount of light (Photosynthetic Active Radiation, PAR) which reaches the ground was thus recorded. Treatments were found not to influence seedling growth, as competition around the regeneration plots was a more important factor. The intensity of competition had, however, an impact on the amount of light which reaches the understory. The results showed that the PAR was a strong factor which had an impact on the balsam fir (Abies balsamea). However, the amount of light in the large gaps favored competing vegetation such that very little natural regeneration was found. Species of interest like white spruce and balsam fir grow better in shade and small gaps with less understory vegetation. Early crop tree release (100 elite trees/ha) and thinning form below were two interesting methods when talking about managing light and competition in the understory, hence managing the renewal of future cohorts in operational stands. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Natural regeneration, white spruce, balsam fir, commercial thinning by elite tree release, ecosystem based management
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
