Video "Visitatori".
"Visitors" is the title of a video and fifteen digital works conceived and created by Dal Falco. For the video he curated the animation with the author Daniele Spanò, while the music is by Fabio Recchia.
In the last years, Dal Falco has collected a vast archive of images, photographing surfaces of materials to which it draws to create videos and digital works. His research is inspired by the metamorphosis of matter and the stratification of signs, identifying over time the great weaver of memories.
The project, a video and fifteen digital images, was born following a trip to Egypt and the idea of representing the coexistence between Western and Muslim culture through the emergence of images of people of different origins who visited the ruins of Luxor in an extended period of time. In the video, visitors, taken from postcards and photographs found on the site, emerge from a wall engraved with hieroglyphs revived by the passage of flying carpets, and then again sucked into the stone that preserves the memory and traces of their passage
Yeast Metabolites of Glycated Amino Acids in Beer
Glycation reactions (Maillard reactions)
during the malting and
brewing processes are important for the development of the characteristic
color and flavor of beer. Recently, free and protein-bound Maillard
reaction products (MRPs) such as pyrraline, formyline, and maltosine
were found in beer. Furthermore, these amino acid derivatives are
metabolized by Saccharomyces cerevisiae via the Ehrlich
pathway. In this study, a method was developed for quantitation of
individual Ehrlich intermediates derived from pyrraline, formyline,
and maltosine. Following synthesis of the corresponding reference
material, the MRP-derived new Ehrlich alcohols pyrralinol (up to 207
μg/L), formylinol (up to 50 μg/L), and maltosinol (up
to 6.9 μg/L) were quantitated for the first time in commercial
beer samples by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography
tandem mass spectrometry in the multiple reaction monitoring mode.
This is equivalent to ca. 20–40% of the concentrations of the
parent glycated amino acids. The metabolites were almost absent from
alcohol-free beers and malt-based beverages. Two previously unknown
valine-derived pyrrole derivatives were characterized and qualitatively
identified in beer. The metabolites investigated represent new process-induced
alkaloids that may influence brewing yeast performance due to structural
similarities to quorum sensing and metal-binding molecules
Metallo bianco
Metallo bianco “Prodotti e applicazioni”.
Architettura Design Moda, Rdesignpress, Roma 2014 e in altre pubblicazioni scientifiche (do.co.mo.mo. giornale, Imprese edili) dell’autrice.
“Products and applications” In the Italy of the '30s, the production of metals underwent a strong impulse and at the same time a specific technical literature developed. In particular, Aluminum and its alloys are presented in the main specialized magazines as symbols of modernity. Their applications, also as a result of self-construction, constitute an important "stratification" of material culture that in addition to architecture includes emblematic and commonly used artifacts. The cold qualities of white metals, often coupled with innovative types of glass, have consistently expressed the modernist aesthetic, corresponding to the needs of abstraction and artificiality of the figurative languages and becoming one of the constants of the constructive and morphological characteristics of the Italian building heritage. The essay returns, through a research on the technical literature of the time and on the main specialized magazines, an overview of the main products and applications of white metals in architecture and design.
The contribution “Authors and works” describes some exemplary applications of white metals from architecture to design. Aluminum alloys, considered at the time one of the most appropriate responses to the natural evolution of taste, have been used to create constructive details and furnishings of significant architeture and design of Italian Rationalism.
The contribution “Conservation techniques” - which explores the issues related to the maintenance and restoration of materials produced or worked in Italy during the 1930s during economic autarky - is in continuity with the studies and publications conducted by Dal Falco starting from his PhD thesis in Technology dell'Architettura (1993, Innovative materials in the architecture of Italian rationalism: aluminum alloys and glass products Technologies, maintenance, restoration) pursued with the CNR research of 1994 (Repertory of building materials and innovative technical solutions in the decade 1930- 1940) and in the research carried out for the Project finalized Beni Culturali CNR 1197-2001 (Restoration of the architecture of the modern movement - Case study: the railway stations of Angiolo Mazzoni, Prof. L. Cupelloni scientific manager). This theme is included in the volume: F. Dal Falco, Styles of Rationalism. Anatomy of fourteen works of Italian rationalism, with writings by A.A.V.V., Gangemi, Roma 2002, in the book F. Dal Falco, Autarchic Products. Architecture Design Fashion, Rdesignpress, Rome 2014 and other scientific publications (do.co.mo.mo. newspaper, Building contractors) of the author.
The contibution “Project and restoration” investigates the issues concerning the protection and restoration of systems of objects and architectural details made of white metal, questioning the methodologies and the complexity of the different practices: maintenance, restoration, musealization, refunctionalization, re-editions. The bibliography, attached is from p. 442 on p. 443
Why are American kestrel (Falco Sparverius) populations declining in North America?: Evidence from nest box programs
Declines in American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) populations are widely reported, and Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data suggest that the North American population declined significantly from 1984 to 2007. Potential factors include the spread of West Nile Virus (WNV), increases in populations of Cooper's Hawks (Accipiter cooperii), and loss of suitable habitat.Peer reviewedReprint from: Journal of Raptor Research v.43 (4) 2009 p.274-28

Ellissi e predicazione. La significazione nel campo simbolico del linguaggio
In Theory of language (Sprachtheorie) Karl Bühler deals with Ellipsis and propositions. His remarks are based on his two-fields theory: deictic field and symbolic field. The paper proposes the path traced by the author in his best-known work Sprachtheorie (1934), in which some considerations about ellipsis are introduced through the symbolic field’s analysis. The contribution consists in a set of notes and reflections about deixis, proposition and predication analyzed by the author. Indeed Buhler’s study of proposition and ellipsis combines syntactic and pragmatic aspects through the “Synsemantic field” analysis and the “Symbolic field” one. The purpose of this article is to emphasize the central role of deixis in communication following Bühler’s thought. He thinks about deixis as an important contribution to the understanding of meaning. Ellipsis and proposition’s analysis become ways to demonstrate the importance of deixis in languag
Preface Special Issue: Differential Linear Logic, Nets and Other Quantitative and Parallel Approaches to Proof-Theory
This special issue is devoted to some aspects of the new ideas that recently arose from the work of Thomas Ehrhard on the models of linear logic (LL) and of the λ-calculus. In some sense, the very origin of these ideas dates back to the introduction of LL in the 80s by Jean-Yves Girard. An obvious remark is that LL yielded a first logical quantitative account of the use of resources: the logical distinction between linear and non-linear formulas through the introduction of the exponential connectives. As explicitly mentioned by Girard in his first paper on the subject, the quantitative approach, to which he refers as ‘quantitative semantics,’ had a crucial influence on the birth of LL. And even though, at that time, it was given up for lack of ‘any logical justification’ (quoting the author), it contained rough versions of many concepts that were better understood, precisely introduced and developed much later, like differentiation and Taylor expansion for proofs. Around 2003, and thanks to the developments of LL and of the whole research area between logic and theoretical computer science, Ehrhard could come back to these fundamental intuitions and introduce the structure of finiteness space, allowing to reformulate this quantitative approach in a standard algebraic setting. The interpretation of LL in the category Fin of finiteness spaces and finitary relations suggested to Ehrhard and Regnier the differential extensions of LL and of the simply typed λ-calculus: Differential Linear Logic (DiLL) and the differential λ-calculus. The theory of LL proof-nets could be straightforwardly extended to DiLL, and a very natural notion of Taylor expansion of a proof-net (and of a λ-term) was introduced: an element of the Taylor expansion of the proof-net/term α is itself a (differential) proof-net/term and an approximation of α
Principi di una sematologia generale nella Sprachtheorie. Metodi, temi e nozioni
The paper focuses on the principles of Karl Bühler’s general sematology through the main concepts presented in the Sprachtheorie (1934). According to the author, a unitary theory of language has its scientific foundation in sematology, meant as a general theory of the sign. In the articlesome important notions for semiotic reflection will be explored, such as sign, field, value and abstractive relevance, from which it is possible to deepen the themes of a Bühlerian sematology. They can be summarized in the significative and instrumental nature of language, and linguistic forms. The goal is to place the author’s work in the broad scenario of semiotic disciplines
Falco: A quick and flexible single-cell RNA-seq processing framework on the cloud
© The Author 2016. Published by Oxford University Press. All rights reserved. Single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) is increasingly used in a range of biomedical studies. Nonetheless, current RNA-seq analysis tools are not specifically designed to efficiently process scRNA-seq data due to their limited scalability. Here we introduce Falco, a cloud-based framework to enable paralellization of existing RNA-seq processing pipelines using big data technologies of Apache Hadoop and Apache Spark for performing massively parallel analysis of large scale transcriptomic data. Using two public scRNA-seq datasets and two popular RNA-seq alignment/feature quantification pipelines, we show that the same processing pipeline runs 2.6-145.4 times faster using Falco than running on a highly optimized standalone computer. Falco also allows users to utilize low-cost spot instances of Amazon Web Services, providing a ∼65% reduction in cost of analysis.link_to_OA_fulltex
