Jacob Viner’s Reminiscences from the New Deal (February 11, 1953)
This paper presents and reproduces an unpublished oral history interview given by Jacob Viner in 1953. The interview released by Viner for the Columbia Oral History Project gives us a valuable opportunity to throw light on his advisory activity during the New Deal Era. In our introduction we attempt to make a critical appraisal of Viner's reminiscences and to state the contribution they can provide to our general knowledge of the period. In addition, we also attempt to find out some biographical and interpretative elements useful to understand Viner’s own vision and his contribution to important economic policy processes during the New Deal.
Measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters from muon neutrino disappearance with an off-axis beam
The T2K Collaboration reports a precision measurement of muon neutrino disappearance with an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. Near detector measurements are used to constrain the neutrino flux and cross section parameters. The Super-Kamiokande far detector, which is 295 km downstream of the neutrino production target, collected data corresponding to 3.01×1020 protons on target. In the absence of neutrino oscillations, 205±17 (syst) events are expected to be detected while only 58 muon neutrino event candidates are observed. A fit to the neutrino rate and energy spectrum, assuming three neutrino flavors and normal mass hierarchy yields a best-fit mixing angle sin2(θ23)=0.514±0.082 and mass splitting |Δm322|=2.44-0.15+0.17×10-3 eV2/c4. Our result corresponds to the maximal oscillation disappearance probability

Photoemission sources and beam blankers for ultrafast electron microscopy
Observing atomic motions as they occur is the dream goal of ultrafast electron microscopy (UEM). Great progress has been made so far thanks to the efforts of many scientists in developing the photoemission sources and beam blankers needed to create short pulses of electrons for the UEM experiments. While details on these setups have typically been reported, a systematic overview of methods used to obtain a pulsed beam and a comparison of relevant source parameters have not yet been conducted. In this report, we outline the basic requirements and parameters that are important for UEM. Different types of imaging modes in UEM are analyzed and summarized. After reviewing and analyzing the different kinds of photoemission sources and beam blankers that have been reported in the literature, we estimate the reduced brightness for all the photoemission sources reviewed and compare this to the brightness in the continuous and blanked beams. As for the problem of pulse broadening caused by the repulsive forces between electrons, four main methods available to mitigate the dispersion are summarized. We anticipate that the analysis and conclusions provided in this manuscript will be instructive for designing an UEM setup and could thus push the further development of UEM.ImPhys/Charged Particle Optic

Ion beam analyses in titanium nitride technology
TI e technology of hard coatings based on stoichiometric titanium nitride thin films has been inovated since the past few years in order to fulfill the demands for better performance and lower processing cost put by the large xale industrial users. The different strategies used to improve the performance consist in (i) modifying the coating composition by introducing otlier elements than Ti and N in the film (multicomponent coatings), (ii) modifying the coating structure by using multilayered composites, and (iii) altering the coating density and porosity by using plasma and ion beam assisted processes. All these different strategies bring about new materials which have to be characterized as an essential part of the refearch and development work. In the present article the use of ion beam analyses is de jcribed (mainly Rutherford backscattering and nuclear reaction analyses) to characterize the thickness, composition, depth profile, contamination and structure of new thin film protective coating materials based on titaniun nitrid
Single step phase optimisation for coherent beam combination using deep learning
Coherent beam combination of multiple fibres can be used to overcome limitations such as the power handling capability of single fibre configurations. In such a scheme, the focal intensity profile is critically dependent upon the relative phase of each fibre and so precise control over the phase of each fibre channel is essential. Determining the required phase compensations from the focal intensity profile alone (as measured via a camera) is extremely challenging with a large number of fibres as the phase information is obfuscated. Whilst iterative methods exist for phase retrieval, in practice, due to phase noise within a fibre laser amplification system, a single step process with computational time on the scale of milliseconds is needed. Here, we show how a neural network can be used to identify the phases of each fibre from the focal intensity profile, in a single step of ~ 10 ms, for a simulated 3-ring hexagonal close-packed arrangement, containing 19 separate fibres and subsequently how this enables bespoke beam shaping. In addition, we show that deep learning can be used to determine whether a desired intensity profile is physically possible within the simulation. This, coupled with the demonstrated resilience against simulated experimental noise, indicates a strong potential for the application of deep learning for coherent beam combination.</p
