Canonical Effective Subalgebras of Classical Algebras as Constructive Metric Completions
Full text linkWe prove general theorems about unique existence of effective subalgebras of classical algebras. The theorems are consequences of standard facts about completions of metric spaces within the framework of constructive mathematics, suitably interpreted in realizability models. We work with general realizability models rather than with a particular model of computation. Consequently, all the results are applicable in various established schools of computability, such as type 1 and type 2 effectivity, domain representations, equilogical spaces, and others

Evaluation of Mobile Phones for Large Display Interaction
Full text linkLarge displays have become more and more common in the last few years. While interaction with these displays can be conducted using standard methods such as computer mouse and keyboard, this approach causes issues in multi-user environments, where the various conditions for providing multiple keyboards and mice, together with the facilities to employ them, cannot be met. To solve this problem, interaction using mobile phones was proposed by several authors. Previous solutions were specialized interaction metaphors only for certain applications. To gain more insight into general interaction patterns realizable with smart phones, we created a set of general test cases using a well-known taxonomy for interactions. These test cases were then evaluated in a user study, comparing smart phone usage against the traditional keyboard/mouse-combination. Results (time and user satisfaction) show strengths and weaknesses when using the new interaction with the smart phone. With further evaluations we draw conclusions on how to improve large display interaction using smart phones in general

Can the Internet Swing the Vote? Results from a study of the 2007 Danish parliamentary election
Full text linkThis article investigates whether political use of the Internet affects users politically. Using a combination of log- and survey data from a study of Internet use during the Danish 2007 parliamentary election, and inspired by theories on agenda setting and on the active/interactive user, three hypotheses are tested: 1) that those who use the Internet most intensively politically are also the most politically affected, 2) that "net activists" (web 2.0 users) are affected more by their political Internet use than "information seekers" (web 1.0 users), and 3) that those who are somewhat or little interested in politics are those most affected by their political Internet use in an election period. All three hypotheses are verified with some modifications. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that socio-demographic factors like age, gender, education and income are of little importance in explaining variation in how voters are affected by their political Internet use. Rather, the level and type of political activity on the Internet and political interest seem to be the most important factors in explaining the degree to which voters are politically affected by their Internet use.political Internet use, parliamentary election, political effects of Internet use, web 2.0, political interest, political media
