Inverse modeling for three-dimensional nanometric localization of electrostatic charges in thin dielectrics
Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) appears as a very useful and versatile instrument for imaging surfaces and for characterizing materials properties at nanoscale such as electrical properties of thin layer materials. The electrical characterization notably involves a three-dimensional localization of the space charge within the submicron materials. Techniques derived from the AFM such as Electrostatic Force Microscopy (EFM) or Kelvin Force Microscopy (KFM); provide a considerable advantage, allowing the acquisition of new information down to nanoscale on the charge build up in dielectric materials and on their ability to store and dissipate charges. Concerning charge density determination, these techniques have been limited by their lack of in-depth sensitivity, i.e. it failed to determine precisely the spatial distribution of the charges in thin dielectric. Knowing charge distribution in the volume is mandatory for a better understanding of charge transport and trapping phenomena in thin dielectric films and at metal/dielectric interface. To overcome this issue, a new technique named Electrostatic Force Distance Curve (EFDC) has been proposed. The EFDC is based on the measurement of the electrostatic force between the AFM probe and the sample. Preliminary experimental results show that the EFDC seems to be sensitive to the location of the charge in 3D, or to electrostatic potential localization. However, the relative contribution of charge distribution (density, lateral/in-depth spreading) is unknown and need to be identified to point out EFDC ability to determine 3D charge distribution. The aim of this thesis is therefore to understand the relationship between the shape of EFDC and spatial distribution of the space charge in the material. In particular, answers have to be provided as the possibility to determine the relative contribution of charge distribution (density, lateral/in-depth spreading) using only EFDC. This is an inverse problem to be solved in order to recover, from experimental measurements, the electrostatic forces (EFDC) created by the charges, the spatial distribution of the charges (density, lateral/in-depth spreading). The thesis is divided into 3 parts. The first part is devoted to develop a realistic and complete model for electrostatic interaction between an AFM probe and a flat thin dielectric layer. In order to reproduce experimental conditions and to base the work on a well-controlled source of force, EFDCs were simulated over a polarized buried electrode within the dielectric. Results reveal a very good agreement between the model and experimental data. The second part is devoted to study EFDC sensitivity to charges localization in thin dielectric using this model. Numerical simulation is implemented to estimate the electrostatic force exerted on the AFM probe induced by a half-ellipsoid charge distribution. The sensitivity of the EFDC shape to charge localization is investigated for the charge cloud parameters as lateral radius, depth and charge density. Finally, we developed an inverse model to localize the injected charge in thin dielectric layers. This model will take an experimental force curve (EFDC) as the input and its output will be the charge cloud parameters: the radius, the density and the depth. Several optimization techniques are tested. The results show that different sets of parameters induce the same force curve (local minimums): charges with high depth and with low density seem to give the same results as surface charges with high density. In addition, we have proposed an original method to determine the lateral spreading of charges knowing only the distribution of the surface potential of the dielectric. By enriching the inverse model with this information, the results show that each EFDC corresponds to a single charge configuration. The optimization algorithm converges towards a global minimum; a unique triplet is then identified: radius, depth and charge density
Modelling and signal processing of a pulsed electroacoustic cell for studying space dielectrics charging
This thesis is in the context of the reliability of satellites subjected to a space environment. Indeed, satellites are made of various dielectric materials which may be charged by electrical particles (electrons and ions). The local accumulation of these particles is called space charge that tends to modify chemical, mechanical and electrical properties of dielectric materials. These modifications cause some physical phenomena, as electrostatic discharges (ESD), that may damage satellite elements and then render obsolete some of its functions. In order to avoid these kinds of scenarios, the National center for space study (CNES) and the "Laboratoire plasma et conversion d'énergie" (LAPLACE) seek to characterize dielectric materials employed in space environment using techniques to probe the charge in time and space. The PEA, or Pulsed Electro-Acoustic method, is one of these techniques. The objective of this thesis to optimize the signal processing of a PEA measurement bench in order to better estimate the time-space distribution of the charge inside a dielectric sample. To achieve this, an original method, based on an optimized PSpice model of the PEA measurement bench, has been developed to allow the characterization of a transfer function of the bench. Using a regularization technique, based on the Tikhonov's one, the results show that the recovery charge obtained from a calibration signal correspond fully to the applied experimental charge. This new signal processing developed during this thesis will allow to study samples: (i) that attenuate and disperse too much the acoustic waves; (ii) that are multilayer; (iii) for which the charges are localized near the irradiated surface; (iv) that are too thin (some tens of microns)
This work is a contribution to the modelling of an electrical arc in the low voltagebreaking devices: circuit breaker, contactor, switch and switch-disconnector. The 2Dmodelling of free burning argon made it possible to validate the numerical code and to studythe influence of the geometrical, physical and numerical parameters on the physical variablesof thermal plasma. According to this study, a 3D modelling in a stationary flow of anelectrical arc in the air with an intensity of 50 A is realized for each breaking devices. Theangle of the aperture of the contacts and the presence of the current feeds are considered. Twoparticular shapes are analyzed: a shape in "U" in the case of the circuit breaker and a shape in"5"' in the case of the contactor, the switch and the switch-disconnector. The results show theinfluence of an external magnetic field on the curve, the shape of the electric arc. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
