Status of the theoretical study of microwave heating in EBT
Get PDFThe basic strategy of the theoretical study of microwave heating in the ELMO Bumpy Torus (EBT) is outlined and the current status of the various aspects of the study is described. There are four broad areas which are being investigated: (1) heating and wave damping mechanisms, (2) the geometrical optics of microwave propagation in EBT, (3) reflection and mode conversion effects at regions such as cutoff and resonances where the geometrical optics approximation breaks down, and (4) nonlinear effects such as ponderamotive effects and parametric decay. Details are given of the geometrical optics code which has been developed to do ray tracing in arbitrary three dimensional (3-D) plasma equilibria. Examples are given for plasma parameters characteristic of EBT-I and EBT-II. Details are also given of the stochastic heating model currently in use with the 1-D transport code and of the linear wave damping model used in the ray tracing code. The most pressing problems of physics yet to be addressed and the directions for future work are indicated

The charge for the talk was not to summarize the present status of the field and what we can do, but to assess what we will need to do in the future and where the gaps are in fulfilling these needs. The objective was to be complete, covering all aspects of theory and modeling in all frequency regimes, although in the end the talk mainly focussed on the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF). In choosing which areas to develop, it is important to keep in mind who the customers for RF modeling are likely to be and what sorts of tasks they will need for RF to do. This occupies the first part of the paper. Then we examine each of the elements of a complete RF theory and try to identify the kinds of advances needed

We all want neighborhoods with the necessary roads, green areas, social facilities, affordable housing and public spaces of high quality. At the same time, nowadays, governments are facing severe cuts in public expenditure. So who is going to pay for all that quality? In the Netherlands and in many other countries, achieving these public goals has become a problem, especially in the regeneration of deteriorated inner cities sites. This book offers insight in how the economic value increase that arises from urban development can serve to finance the quality we want, without the need for public subsidies. The findings and recommendations made in this book focus on Western Europe, mainly on successful and alternatively less successful recent experiences in Spain, England and the Netherlands. Public bodies can use the recommendations to create the necessary conditions to improve the involvement of property developers and landowners in the financing of infrastructure and facilities. Property developers and landowners can find formulas for private-public partnership that can lead to lower development costs and risks, allowing them to pay for good infrastructure and facilities while maintaining profitability. Scholars will find here the theoretical backgrounds for this relevant topic.
