Road safety strategic analysis in Brazil: indicator and index research
The intense economic growth that Brazil has experienced in recent decades and its consequent
explosive motorization process have resulted in an undesirable impact: the continuously
increasing trend in traffic fatality numbers. This study presents a research on indicators and
indexes with the objective of delivering both overall and disaggregated evidence about the
road safety performance and targets in fatality reduction in Brazil at the state level taking the
exposure into account. The intention is to support road safety strategic analysis in the country
and to contribute to improve this critical scene. The methodological structure of this thesis
consists of the following three main parts: (I) diagnosing the road safety situation at the state
level using final outcome related information, in particular traffic fatality risk data; (II) setting
a target number of traffic fatalities based on the relationship between the exposure level and
the number of traffic fatalities in each state; and (III) suggesting domains for improvements
based on the research of safety performance indicators representing three domains (road user,
environment and vehicle) throughout the states. From a benchmarking point of view, we
divided the Brazilian states into three separate clusters in order to provide more realistic state
performance comparisons. After a data collection and indicators selection step, Data
Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was the method used for executing the different steps, with the
application of four different types of models specially developed for the identified research
purposes. In addition, by means of bootstrapping the DEA scores we measured the sensitivity
of the results to possible variations in the input data, for example concerning data quality and
availability. As a result, we provided a road safety diagnosis per state as well as traffic fatality
targets according to different perspectives: the entire group of road users (motorized and nonmotorized
ones), motor vehicle occupants, and finally a disaggregated performance evaluation
by running four separate DEA models (for motorcycle, car, truck and bus). Moreover, the SPI
research including a hierarchy of 27 safety performance indicators expressed the state’s
relative performance on the main road safety domains. Lastly, state profiles compiling all this
information summarized the “per state” findings

What medicines do people with Parkinson's disease want?
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a heterogeneous condition that presents variable clinical, neuropathological, and biomarker features. Disease progression can also vary significantly. It is essential to consider this heterogeneity when considering the medicines that people with Parkinson's (PwP) want. Potential PD medicines may be classed as disease modifying (DMT) or symptomatic (ST). The ultimate hope of PwP is that, sooner rather than later, the core of the PD pharmacopeia will provide personalised cocktails of drugs that not only deliver motor and non-motor symptom relief, but also slow, stop and then reverse disease progression. Generally, PwP are less interested in the scientific details, they are more focused on maintaining or improving quality of life. For those people at risk of PD, diagnosis in the pre-motor stage may herald the introduction of new medicines that arrest the progress of the disease before symptoms are manifest. One way to understand the medicines that PwP want is to ask which symptoms are the most bothersome, and target them accordingly. In practice, medicines that present optimal efficacy and convenience, at an affordable price, will be more likely to be accepted. Interactions between researchers and PwP should be encouraged in order to deepen the understanding of each other's needs and motivations. Finally, it is important to remember that PwP are individuals with emotions and concerns. As such, moderation in the communication of prognosis and of the potential of new medicines is essential, so that PwP can maintain hope rather than being misled by hype.Plain language summary Parkinson's disease (PD) is a highly variable condition for which no effective disease-modifying interventions exist. Disease variability is seen from person to person, from day to day, and even at different times of the same day. Currently, symptoms can be managed using medicines, surgical interventions, or lifestyle interventions. Major efforts are under way to discover new medicines, so it is important to ask the question, ‘what medicines do people with Parkinson's (PwP) want?’. A way to respond to this question is to assess which symptoms are the most troublesome, then to translate this information to help develop drugs that target them. Together with drugs to slow, stop and reverse the progression of PD, options will be available from a portfolio of drugs that enable PwP to maintain their quality of life for longer. New drugs should also provide efficacy and convenience and not present any barriers to their administration. Interactions between researchers and PwP should be encouraged in order to deepen the understanding of each other's needs and motivation. We also need open and direct communication about the real potential of new drugs, so that we can distinguish the hope from the hype.Parkinson's disease (PD) is a heterogeneous condition that presents variable clinical, neuropathological, and biomarker features. A Journey Around Tiago Rodrigues’ Room
Tiago Rodrigues is, today, one of the most credited European theatre artists.
From an actor who wrote and often directed his own texts, Rodrigues quickly began to establish
himself also as an author and director. There is an undoubtable singularity in Tiago
Rodrigues’ theatre. He is one of the clearest examples in contemporary world performance
of a Goethian drive for “world literature”. It is our argument that one of Rodrigues most
perceivable dramaturgical axes is a desire to pay homage to European humanistic traditions
as a gesture of political resistance through art and memory. His literary journey through the
words and titles of the past aim poignantly to supersede the failures of the present.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
AbstractThis article aims to present an individual perspective on Tiago Baptista’s work. In it, we find a deep relationship with a universe of concerns related with the identification of our human flaws. In this wider context old legends about the History of Painting are called upon his work, mixed with several references of notable artists who integrate that same history. Through the praxis of this author, through his own words, and the words that others have found faire to create about this ambiguous representations, it is important to understand this specific symbiosis which supports the images made by Baptista
