The theory and practice of utopia in our troubled times : a conversation with author Larissa Lai and critic Sherryl Vint

Amid current global crises, the international conference “The Knock at the Door: Utopian Dreams for Post-Covid Times,” jointly organized by the University of Huelva (Spain) and the University of Calgary (Canada) on May 21–24, 2023, at the University of Huelva, provided a forum for reflecting upon the role played by speculative fiction in (re)imagining better futures, while remaining vigilant to possible threats and dangers. The title of the conference, borrowed from philosopher John Rajchman,1 is intentionally ambiguous. Lying behind that door could be total liberation for all—or it could be secret police who lead us toward genocides, deportation, rapes, and mass graves. Taking this dichotomous trope, “the knock at the door,” as a point of departure, professors Larissa Lai (University of Toronto, Canada; recipient of a Maria Zambrano fellowship at the University of Huelva at the time of the interview) and Sherryl Vint (University of California Riverside, USA) engaged...Depto. de Estudios Ingleses: Lingüística y LiteraturaFac. de Ciencias Económicas y EmpresarialesTRUEpu

Sustainable mobility in the city of Larissa

    No full text
This paper on sustainable mobility in the city of Larissa, Greece, is from the proceedings of 14th international Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment in the 21st Century, which was held in Malta in 2008. Larissa is a dynamic industrial, agricultural and cultural centre in the mainland of Greece with around 200,000 inhabitants. The author first briefly reviews the history of urban planning in Larissa, which began in the 1970s and since then has included a series of plans and studies that have been elaborated and implemented, all aiming at sustainable development, urban renaissance and sustainable mobility in the city center. Larissa uses a wide pedestrian network, as well as a less extended bike network, as an integral part of an infrastructure that connects the administrative center to the traditional, older part of the city and to the river shores zone. The author stresses that this infrastructure and framework has improved the quality of life and have had a direct positive impact on the physiognomy of the city. The author concludes with proposals of further sustainable mobility and urban transport policy for Larissa, discussing how these could be applied in towns of similar scale in the wider European area

Effectiveness of reginalism for development: considerations for Latin America

The theories of development have had an historic and conceptual evolution through the XX Century. The Human Development Index, from United Nations, is the parameter considered the most adequate to measure the development of the countries. It is inspired on the research of the Indian economist Amartya Sen, and considers several elements at the countries HDI classification, all elements being what is believed to be the basic structure for every individual to be free to make its own decisions regarding its living. Trade an important issue to the development, as it allows the production specialization, considering the singular characteristics of each country and the increase in productivity, (because the commercial exchange guarantees the possibility of acquiring all the products necessary for living without having to make each one of them). For this reason, the international exchanges are an important tool for development, and its evolution has always target the freedom of trade, based at principles such as non-discrimination and elimination of trade barriers, which had a great impulse with the GATT Rounds and the formation of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The regionalism is an antique and complex movement, composed by geographic, political, economic, cultural and juridical variables, among others. Although its first manifestations can be found at the Ancient Age, the recent phenomenon is based on the proliferation of preferential commercial arrangements, accepted by the multilateral system as exceptions of the principle of the most favored nation (article XXIV of GATT), because it is believed that regional agreements facilitate the implementation of the multilateral system and generates the development of the countries. The great participation of developing countries and least developed countries in regional trade arrangements and its persistent subdeveloped condition when compared to the developed economies makes us question the statement that regionalism promotes development. Using the example of the Latin America, this thesis intends to analyze the issue and conclude on the efficacy of the regionalism in promoting the development of the involved countries

Larissa trendien parissa : Taustatyö trendiennusteblogia varten

    No full text
This study explored the history of trend forecasting to identify the main research methods used in the field. The author aimed to deepen her personal knowledge in the field of fashion and to distribute the obtained knowledge to design students who are interested in trend forecasting. The study focused on defining the concept of fashion and trends. The history of the 20th century fashion from the second world war to 1990s fashion is discussed in an attempt to explore the main factors that have an effect on fashion. Methods used in trend forecasting were applied to make trend forecasts for season spring/ summer 2014. An analysis of forecasts were used to discover the underlying motives for trends. These analyses explored why trends are moving in certain directions and demonstrated the author’s perception of the main factors that influence fashion. The study increased the author’s knowledge about trend forecasting and empowered the author with the requirements to apply the obtained knowledge to create realistic and professional fashion trend forecasts

Evaluation of the PrioCHECK™ Trichinella AAD kit to detect Trichinella spiralis, T. britovi, and T. pseudospiralis larvae in pork using the automated digestion method Trichomatic-35.

Trichinellosis is a potentially deadly parasitic zoonosis that is contracted by consuming undercooked infected meat. Reliable detection of infectious Trichinella spp. larvae in meat is therefore pivotal to ensure consumer's safety. The recently authorised PrioCHECK™ Trichinella Alternative Artificial Digestion (AAD) test kit appears promising when used with the standard magnetic stirrer method, but evaluation with other apparatus types is lacking. In this study, the performance of the AAD kit in an adapted Trichomatic-35 (TM35) instrument was evaluated, first, at the Swiss National Reference Laboratory for trichinellosis (NRL); second, in a ring trial involving four Swiss official laboratories. Proficiency pork samples spiked with larvae of Trichinella spiralis, T. britovi, or T. pseudospiralis were tested with the AAD kit and with the reference pepsin-HCl digestion method in TM35 instruments. At the NRL, both methods yielded identical qualitative and similar quantitative results independently of the Trichinella species. In the ring trial, satisfactory results were obtained for 47/50 (94.0%) (AAD) and 62/67 (92.5%) (reference method) of the analysed samples. Technical problems impairing analysis were more frequently observed with the AAD kit (n = 22) than with the reference method (n = 5) and were mainly (16/22) reported by one of the external labs. When no technical issues were recorded, the performance of both methods was comparable, in agreement with the observations at the NRL; however, these results suggest a need for further training with the kit and standardisation of the adapted TM35 instruments

Larissa L. Albina and Anthony R. Strugnell : New Research on the Identification of Diderot's Books. Following earlier research begun by A. Wilson and V.S. Lioublinski, a new study of the volumes in the Leningrad Library from the foreign section of the Ermitage Imperial Library has made it possible to establish criteria for identifying those belonging to Diderot. These criteria concern the organisation of the library, the works referred to in Diderot's writings and marks in the books themselves (including on occasion a few notes or a dedication by the author to Diderot) . As a result, the authors have drawn up a list of about eighty volumes (including some previously listed as belonging to Voltaire's library) which can be more or less certainly identified as having belonged to Diderot.Albina Larissa L., Strugnell Anthony. Re-Visiting Palestine con Larissa Sansour: Oltre i confini dell’appartenenza?

    No full text
