From risk management to ERM
At one point in time, there was self-insurance. Then came risk management. Now comes the era of enterprise risk management(ERM). Traditional risk management will always be necessary, but ERM will complement existing risk activities by extending the field to cover all core risks as well as emerging and strategic opportunities, because without taking risks, organisations gain no value. This paper will present the main elements of an ERM framework and characteristics of different types of ERM.ERM, CRO, risk management, risk designation, risk framework, risk system, risk culture, governance, risk intelligence, risk capital, GIR
Evaluation of the influence of the ERM II mechanism on the internal and external balance
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the ERM II mechanism and to explain it's positives and negatives for the internal and external economic balance. In the first part of this thesis the author engages in the ERM II system and other applied exchange mechanisms. Further he focuses in detail on the theory of internal and external economic balance. In the analytic part of the work the author uses chosen indicators to monitor the influence of ERM II mechanism on the internal and external balance of three selected countries - Malta, Cyprus and Latvia. In the closing part the author summarizes the outcome of the analysis
Open-source electronic resource management systems: A collaborative implementation
Librarians and strategists at Simon Fraser University (SFU) have collaborated with a team of middle-sized libraries to expand the open-source CUFTS reSearcher suite of tools to include an electronic resource management (ERM) system called CUFTS ERM. This article focuses on the development and implementation of CUFTS ERM; the interoperability between CUFTS ERM and integrated library systems; and the impact of the ERM system on acquisitions, serials, and collections workflows and staffing at SFU Library and the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) Library. Investigation of risk management changes in insurance companies
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. This thesis studies the change process of risk management practices associated with the
implementation of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and the extent to which it can lead to
changes in capital allocation practices. The study develops a theoretical framework to study risk management changes, which draws on structuration theory (Giddens, 1979, 1984) and institutional theory, particularly the institutional framework of Burns and Scapens (2000), as well as new institutional sociology theory. A two-stage empirical study was undertaken in non-life insurance companies. The first stage was a field study of 10 listed non-life insurance companies, while the second stage was a case study of a large non-life insurance company. Multiple data collection methods were used including semi-structured interviews, documentary evidence, annual reports, and publicly available data. Findings show internal, coercive, and normative pressures have mainly driven the ERM adoption decision. The literature supports the impact of coercive, mimetic, and normative pressures on the trend toward ERM in financial industries. However, the study finds that internal pressures related to achieving the company's objectives are either equal to or surpass
the external pressures. The study also provides empirical evidence of the changes in risk management practices, which include capital allocation change process associated with ERM implementation. Effective capital allocation requires the incorporation of ERM elements in the whole process of allocating capital. Furthermore, new capital allocation routines and institutions are produced. The study shows that the risk-based capital allocation method is intra- and extra-institutionalised at the company level. The main contribution of this thesis is to identify the nature of ERM adoption and
implementation in insurance companies. More specifically, this study provides a better
understanding of the institutional forces driving ERM adoption and offers empirical evidence on ERM implementation and the change in risk management practices (routines) within nonlife insurance companies. Moreover, this study avoids the limitations of previous research that was based on surveys, and it does so by conducting an exploratory field study and
explanatory case study to address the changes in risk management practices. Practices and process need to be located in their institutional context and hence cannot be reflected in surveys

An Examination of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Practices among the Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) in Malaysia Associate Professor in Risk Management, Faculty of Business Management & Accountancy (FBMA) Senior Lecturer in Enterprise Risk Management
Abstract Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a new concept of managing risks holistically and in Malaysia, such a concept is still relatively new among Malaysian companies. On a positive note however, the ERM concept appear to be receiving much attention over the recent years from various businesses and industries in Malaysia. This particular study aims to determine the level of ERM adoption among the Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) and to examine the influence of Chief Risk Officers (CROs) and Board of Directors (BODSs) on the ERM implementation itself. Findings of the study showed that the more established GLCs were more receptive to the adoption of ERM as compared to the less established ones. Also, companies that adopt ERM were found to have appointed the Chief Risk Officers (CROs). In addition, the quality of Board of Directors (BODSs) was also found to play a significant role in respect of ERM implementation
Snail regulates the motility of oral cancer cells via RhoA/Cdc42/p-ERM pathway
The transcriptional factor Snail has been reported to possess properties related to cancer progression; however, the mechanism for it is not fully understood. Our data showed that Snail knockdown by small interfering RNA in two OSCC cell lines, WSU-HN6 and CAL27, significantly inhibited cell migration and invasion which also resulted in decreased cell motility, such as impaired cell spreading on type I collagen substrate, reduced filopodia, and premature assembly of stress fibers. In addition, Snail-silencing decreased Cdc42 activity but increased RhoA activity, accompanied by the downregulation in both p-ERM expression and cell motility. Meanwhile, endogenous p-ERM was found specifically co-precipitated with activated Cdc42, but not RhoA, and this co-association was decreased by Snail-silencing. The small molecule inhibitors of Rho-associated kinase (Y27632) markedly enhanced Cdc42 activity and the association of p-ERM with activated Cdc42, increasing cell motility remarkably. Using immunohistochemistry, Snail and p-ERM overexpressions were found in OSCC tissues correlated with nodal metastasis and shorter survival. Taken together, these results demonstrate that Snail regulates cell motility through RhoA/Cdc42/p-ERM pathway and may serve as a biomarker to predict prognosis for OSCC patients. Although RhoA and Cdc42 are concurrently regulated downstream of Snail, there is a direct interplay between them, which indicates RhoA has to be inactivated at some point in cell motility cycle. Dynamics and function of ERM proteins during cytokinesis in human cells
The molecular mechanism that governs cytoskeleton-membrane interaction during animal cytokinesis remains elusive. Here, we investigated the dynamics and functions of ERM (Ezrin/Radixin/Moesin) proteins during cytokinesis in human cultured cells. We found that ezrin is recruited to the cleavage furrow through its membrane-associated domain in a cholesterol-dependent but largely Rho-independent manner. While ERMs are dispensable for furrow ingression, they play a pivotal role in contractile activity of the polar cortex. Notably, when anillin and supervillin are codepleted, ERMs increasingly accumulate at the cleavage furrow and substantially contribute to the furrow ingression. These results reveal a supportive role of ERMs in cortical activities during cytokinesis, and also provide insight into the selective mechanism that preferentially associates cytokinesis-relevant proteins with the division site
A study on Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) practices in oil and gas industry / Alia Abdullah Saleh, Al-Hafzan Abdullah Halim and Anas Zafirol Abdullah Halim
The recent development of oil and gas industry has seen the aggressive and rigorous activities by the organizations directly and indirectly involved in exploration and production of oil and gas. Realizing the importance of risk management of which, once were the secondary activities to the organizations in Malaysia, this dissertation titled "Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Practices in Oil and Gas Industry" is documented. This first objective of doing this research is to identify the ERM practices in oil and gas industry in particular to PETRONAS Berhad and CNPE Services Sdn Bhd as the case studies. The second objective is to analyze the opinion from personnel on ERM implementation within the oil and gas organization. Analysis for the research comprises of comparative and descriptive approach as well as qualitative analysis which are based on case studies and questionnaire-guided interview. The findings revealed that ERM practices is systematically established, implemented and enforced as part of risk management tool in oil and gas industry in Malaysia. In addition, the opinions gathered from respondents in oil and gas industry shows that ERM practices and implementation are very encouraging. The information is obtained from oil and gas a personnel working in multiple disciplines within the organization comprises of oil and gas operators, consulting companies and service providers, where the results were then thoroughly analyzed. From the observations and findings, the author anticipate that this research would provide better perception to the readers on the scenario of ERM practices within oil and gas industry and the extent of risk management awareness in Malaysia. It is suggested that an in-depth research on the ERM practices are undertaken within the oil and gas industry or related industry to establish the degree of effectiveness and as a benchmark for adoption by the other industries
