Three-component velocity measurements in a momentum-conserving, axisymmetric, turbulent jet

Experiments have been performed on a momentum conserving axisymmetric turbulent jet, the turbulence characteristics of which are well known [1]. Simultaneous three-component velocity measurements are acquired with high spatial and temporal resolution, using a new triple-sensor hotwire probe. Velocity and directional calibrations are performed using a dedicated automatic calibration system. Two experiments are performed; one for capturing the average velocity field in a 3D volume, and one for investigating the turbulence spectra in specific points in space. In the first experiment, measurements are performed in 9 equidistant cross-planes, from 10- to 50-diameters downstream of the nozzle using a computer-controlled traversing system. The spatial resolution is as low as 1 mm and the sampling rate was 10 kHz. In the second experiment, long velocity time histories are acquired with 50 kHz sampling rate to perform power spectral density computations for each velocity component. Preliminary results of velocity capture confirm the general characteristics of the turbulent jet. The power spectra at different positions indicate that the turbulent fluctuations are not isotropic at lower frequencies

Performance improvements for unplanned high density wireless LANs

Chaotic unplanned IEEE 802.11 WLAN deployments are becoming the norm and such residential deployments have many nearby access points (APs) and stations on the same channel, either due to lack of coordination or insufficient available channels. Thus, inter-cell interference in these high-density settings is common but not well-understood. Our evaluations for such interfering deployments reveal that up-to two-thirds of the WLAN system capacity may be lost in a typical large-apartment building with 50 interfering WLANs In this thesis, we first report on our analysis of high-density unplanned WLANs' performance under realistic scenarios. We find that with a typical TCP-dominant workload, cumulative system throughput is characterized by the number of actively interfering APs rather than the number of clients. We verify that due to TCP flow control, the number of backlogged stations in such a network equals twice the number of active APs. Thus, a single AP network proves very robust even with over one hundred clients, while multiple interfering APs lead to a significant increase in collisions that reduces throughput and affects multimedia traffic. Based on our analysis, we suggest a practical contention window adaptation technique, WiPhi, using information on the number of nearby APs rather than clients. We also point out the need for collision-resilient rate adaptation in such a setting. Together these techniques can largely recover the loss in cumulative throughput in a setting with strongly interfering APs. We then propose an alternative ISP-level solution, HeedNet, recovering lost performance by scheduling the IP packets of the bulk traffic at the ISP edge-router towards interfering APs. It requires no changes to the MAC protocol and the APs of the network, making it a viable solution for ISPs. We evaluate HeedNet via simulations and an actual deployment to show that a significant portion of the lost system capacity can be regained (more than 2.2X improvement compared to legacy). HeedNet also increases the fairness, reducing starvation among WLANs. Additionally, we show that HeedNet improves the performance of the non-scheduled (i.e., non-bulk) traffic considerably, such as VoIP, due to the reduced-collision rate environment it creates.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical referencesIncludes vitaby Mesut Ali Ergi

The role of texture evolution and strain hardening on the anisotropic response of polycrystalline metals:

Anisotropy and texture plays an important role in deformation of Aluminum alloy sheets. The development of anisotropy during metal forming is a key factor as in the standard industrial use of AA-6022 as stamped automotive body enclosures where a close estimation of anisotropy can deduct costs on both machinery and inventory. In this thesis, we provide a methodology to predict the anisotropic behavior of polycrystalline metals depending on its processing history. The methodology suggested is based on single crystal plasticity model of Cuitino and Ortiz where the mechanics of dislocation motion through forest dislocations is estimated statistically. In that context, we first study the role of uncertainties and responses of the initial parameters such as initial yield stress and dislocation density. R-values, which is a measure of anisotropy, of a sample undergone hydraulic bulge test are obtained by a uniaxial tensile test simulation and found to be in good agreement with the experimental findings. An optimization method to capture the texture while reducing the number of orientations is introduced and compared with random sets of orientations. Gradual work hardening effect is captured by adjusting the dislocation density carried over through consecutive simulations of rolling and uniaxial stretching. However more accurate models of rolling simulations is necessary to provide r-values and work hardening effect without the need of texture.M.S.Includes bibliographical references (p. 2-5)by E. Negotiating participation : vulnerable children in family law proceedings

    No full text
Drawing upon a Swedish study of vulnerable children as social actors in family law proceedings this paper explores how children themselves approach and negotiate the issue of participation. The discussion is based upon thematically structured interviews with children whose father has been violent to their mother and who have met with social workers in the context of a legal dispute about custody, residence or contact. The analysis reconstructs how these children have dealt with encounters with social workers and to what extent they used the space for action they perceived that they had. What children are doing in this situation – that they all are somehow prepared for– can be seen as intentional at least to some extent. Therefore the concept of strategy seems appropriate: actions and non-action are chosen for a purpose. Children’s strategies are outlined and it is discussed how different child strategies may be linked to children’s perspectives on participation expressed in these interviews, and what these links between children’s perspectives and their strategies can tell us about children’s participation in the context of a difficult life situation.</p

La répartition de la pression statique dans la volute des pompes centrifuges

Static pressure distribution in the volutes of centrifugal pumps. The static pressure distribution in the volute of a centrifugal pump is seen not to be evenly distributed around the impeller periphery, even when the pump is running at normal conditions. To deal with the obvious drawbacks of this phenomenon, the Author proposes a theoretical method for obtaining a suitable volute shape with an even distribution. The method is essentially based on the assumption that the water leaves the impeller in the form of a number of successive jets diffusing in the main volute flow. By means of certain assumptions, a method can be obtained for designing the various volute cross-sections. The value of this method was verified by means of a number of tests on a standard volute and one designed by the proposed method. The result was an overall increase of about 2 % in the efficiency in the redesigned volute.
