An investigation of cochlear dynamics in surgical and implanation processes
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. The aim of this research is to improve the understanding of the impact on the
cochlear dynamics corresponding to surgical tools, processes and hearing implants
such that these can be designed more appropriately in the future. The results suggest that enhanced performance of implants can be achieved by optimisation of the location with respect to the cochlea and have shown that robotic surgical tools used
to enable precise, simplified processes can reduce harm and offer other benefits.
With an ageing population, and where exposure to noise on daily basis is increased
rather than industrial settings, at least two factors of age and noise, will contribute to a greater incidence of hearing loss in the population in the future.
In the research a mathematical model of the passive cochlea was produced to
increase understanding of the sensitivity and behaviour of the fluid, structure and
pressure transients within the cochlea. The investigation has been complemented by
an innovative experimental technique developed to evaluate the dynamics in the
cochlear fluids while maintaining the integrity of the cochlear structure. This
technique builds on the success of the state-of-the-art surgical robotic micro-drill.
The micro-drill enables removal of bone tissue to prepare a consistent aperture onto
the endosteal membrane within the cochlea. This is known as preparing a ‘Third
window’. In this technique the motion of the exposed endosteal membrane is treated
as the diaphragm element of a pressure transducer and is measured using a Micro-
Scanning Laser Vibrometer operating through a microscope. There are two principal outcomes of the research: First, the approach has enabled disturbances in the cochlea to be contrasted for different surgical techniques, which it is expected to allude preferential methods in future surgery in otology. In particular it was shown that when using the robotic micro-drill to create a cochleostomy that the disturbance amplitude reduces to 1% of that experienced when using conventional drilling. Secondly, an empirically derived frequency map of the cochlea has been produced to understand how the location of implants affects maximum power transmission over the required frequency band. This has also shown the feasibility of exciting the cochlea at a third window in order to amplify
cochlear response
Dopiero w 2001 roku trzy figuralne witraże kaplicy Ukrzyżowania poddane zostały gruntownej konserwacji w toruńskiej pracowni Władysława i Wojciecha Koziołów.The stained-glass windows of the Calvary in Wiele in Kashubia from 1915–1922 constitute important decorative and conceptual elements of a large landscape architecture project. The construction of the complex started by rector Józef Szydzik during the Partition of Poland was continued when Poland regained independence by his successor priest Józef Wrycz. The direct ideological motivation for the erection of the Calvary was the desire to commemorate the sacrifices of the local community on the front line of World War I and to manifest the Polish religious spirit of the Kashubians. The complex includes altogether 14 chapels, 7 carving compositions, “Scalae Sanctae” and a hermitage, which makes it possible to classify it as one of the so-called great Calvaries. The author of the project of the establishment was Theodor Mayr, an architect from Munich. The complex is stylistically consistent with the modernist interpretation of Baroque forms with a tendency use them freely. At the same time, it is not deprived of references to the elements of the regional Kashubian architectural style. The earliest five buildings were fitted with stained-glass windows manufactured in renown Munich workshops of Franz Xavier Zettler and Hans Bockhorni to designs by Bavarian artists Gebhard Fügel and Theodor Baierl. The most important decorative elements of the interior of the main chapel of Crucifixion are three impressive stained-glass windows designed by Theodor Baierl from 1916. In terms of the message they convey, these stained-glass windows serve as a medium of religious symbolism, but they also make reference to contemporary events and preserve images of the of local people in a specific situational context.
During World War II, on the initiative of occupational authorities, who incorporated the Calvary into the German cultural heritage, the renovation of the chapels was carried out. After the war, the buildings gradually deteriorated, and some of the stained-glass windows were completely destroyed. It was only in 2001 that three figurative stained-glass windows of the chapel of the Crucifixion underwent thorough renovation in the workshop of Władysław and Wojciech Kozioł in Toruń

The article deals with an unknown Latin version of the miʿrāǧ the author has discovered in the Archive of the Pontifical Gregorian University within an booklet written by Baldassarre Loyola Mandes S.J. (1631-1667), a Moroccan Muslim prince converted to Christianity who then joined the Society of Jesus. The aim of the article will be to demonstrate how this Latin miʿrāǧ relied on an Arabic source related to the ḥadīṯ literature. As a method for reaching our aim, we will make a comparative study of the sources of which Baldassare may have had knowledge. We will further show the way Baldassarre tried not only to polemicize with the Islamic tradition, but also the strategies he used for Christianizing it.El artículo versa sobre una versión latina desconocida del miʿrāǧ que el autor ha descubierto en el Archivo de la Pontificia Universidad Gregoriana dentro de un opúsculo escrito por Baldassarre Loyola Mandes S.J.
