Remarks on Early Medieval legal charters — The legend of “dux Ingo” and his “carta sine litteris”
Enea Silvio Piccolomini in his work entitled
De Europa
written in 1458, tells an interesting story defined as a legend in terms of genre about a duke called Ingo, who lived during the reign of Charlemagne. This narrative claims that in 790
dux gentis
Ingo held a feast for the inhabitants of his province where food was served to the peasants allowed to appear before him in golden and silver bowls, while to the dignitaries standing further away from him in bowls made of clay. The researchers’ attention is deservedly raised by the query how come that this parabolical story with biblical tone was included in Enea Silvio’s work; if it had been borrowed who the
auctor
might have been he borrowed it from. The answer seems to be very simple: from the
Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum
drafted regarding the lawsuit proceeded against Methodius. In the case narrated in the
Conversio
Ingo sent a charter or much rather a parchment without any writing, or letters on it
(carta sine litteris)
, which provided his legate with sufficient authenticity to demand obedience from the people. In this study-after having compared the two narratives and outlined the place of De Europa in Enea Silvio Piccolomini’s oeuvre and the circumstances of the drafting and tendencies of the Conversio Bagoariorum et Carantanorum-the author attempts to answer the following questions. To what extent can duke Ingo, mentioned by Enea Silvio and not questioned in the literature for long centuries, be considered a real historical person? Does the Conversio refer to Ingo as a duke, and if it does, what is his existence as a duke and introduction in the literature as a duke owing to? What could the meaning of carta sine litteris referred to in Conversio have been, and why did Enea Silvio not take this item over although he could have put it forward as a further proof of Ingo’s dignity? To what literary prefigurations can the description of the feast held by Ingo be traced back to, and what role did it play in the Conversio? Regarding the borrowing of the Ingo story by Enea Silvio, what possible intermediary writing and author can be reckoned with

Authorship as cultural performance: new perspectives in authorship studies
This article proposes a performative model of authorship, based on the historical alternation between predominantly 'weak' and 'strong' author concepts and related practices of writing, publication and reading. Based on this model, we give a brief overview of the historical development of such author concepts in English literature from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. We argue for a more holistic approach to authorship within a cultural topography, comprising social contexts, technological and media factors, and other cultural developments, such as the distinction between privacy and the public sphere

Morphology and electronic structure of gold clusters on graphite
The morphology and the electronic structure of gold clusters on graphite have been studied using a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS).The cluster samples have been prepared by controlled condensation into preformed nanometer-sized pits on the surface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). Depending on the Au exposure the cluster sizes vary from some 10 atoms up to several 10000 atoms. Small Au clusters significantly below 1000 atoms do not show facets whereas large clusters consisting of more than 10000 atoms exhibit hexagonal facets on top with a (111) orientation. The local density of states has been measured on these facets by spatially resolved STS. The observed pronounced patterns in the dI/dV maps could be explained by a Shockley surface state confined to the cluster facet. The symmetry of the patterns as well as the energetic position of the quantized states are in well agreement with the results of a simple model. The pronounced features in the dI/dV curves of smaller, non-faceted clusters show systematic trends for certain size ranges. The growth process has been investigated by in situ UPS and STM measurements during the preparation of the cluster sample. A semi-quantitative model has been used for the data analysis. For the interpretation of UPS data of clusters on surfaces the so-called dynamic final state effect has to be taken into account. This effect results in a broadening and an asymmetric shift of spectral features due to a convolution with a distribution function P(W). The dependence on the photon energy has been demonstrated explicitly by a combination of UPS and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Deconvolution algorithms based on the adaptive kernel maximum entropy method (AK-MEM) have been proved to be well-suited for the extraction of P(W) from the experimental data. Finally, the spatial resolution of STS is combined with the angle-resolved information of the UPS data. Due to the dynamic final state effect a correction of the angle-resolved photoelectron spectra is necessary for the direct comparison of the data. This results in a complete and consistent view of the confined surface state on the top facets of large Au clusters on graphite
Letteratura come progetto alternativo?
The article examines Ingo Schulze’s novel Die rechtschaffenen Mörder (2020) in the light of the considerations on estrangement expressed by the author in his speech for the Brecht Prize in 2013. This paper highlights how the novel is about two types of ‘estrangements’: the first, along Brecht’s lines, is at the service of committed literature, capable of representing an “alternative project” for society; the second, on the other hand, is functional to the author’s self-reflective moment and characteristic of the postmodern novel. The analysis of the novel argues that ‘estrangement’, from being a tool of political and social commitment aimed at demystifying power relations, ultimately becomes a merely formal device that preserves the status quo in the market of artistic forms produced by the “mass-democratic postmodernity” (Kondylis) in which Schulze operates, thus counteracting Brecht’s and perhaps even Schulze’s own initial aim.The article examines Ingo Schulze’s novel Die rechtschaffenen Mörder (2020) in the light of the considerations on estrangement expressed by the author in his speech for the Brecht Prize in 2013. A Structural Solution to Roaming in Europe
This paper suggests that international roaming markets suffer from structural flaws in the way that roaming agreements are established in Europe. The initial roaming interventions by the European Commission in 2007 have been very welfare enhancing and the transfer of producer surplus to consumers has brought significant benefits to end users. Nevertheless, there are clear opportunity costs of maintaining and/or extending the current roaming Regulation. The price for wholesale roaming services in a given country is driven principally by the amount of traffic that an operator is willing to send back to the country requesting a price offer and not on the basis of the roaming services requested. The paper suggests that by breaking the link between the prices offered in one country and the volume of returned traffic will enable the wholesale market for international roaming to operate competitively. It is further suggested that retail price regulation is unwarranted when the wholesale market can operate competitively irrespective of the issue of the retail elasticity of demand for these services. Preliminary, suggestions are put forward as to how policy makers could transition from the current regime to a future market based regime by putting a number of required enablers in place.Roaming regulation, mobile telephony, European single market

É desta articulação, que defendemos ser possível reextrair, no próprio autor, o que aqui denominamos ética do feminino que, longe de romper com a ética do desejo proposta por ele, a suplementariaThis research starts from a lateral statement by Lacan in Seminar XX: More, still about the possibility of rewriting his Seminar VII: The ethics of psychoanalysis. We seek to apprehend the tacit meaning behind this statement. Our hypothesis is that the possible ethical engagement present in the SXX is related to the possibility of an articulation of the logical demarcation of jouissance beyond the phallic jouissance, established at this moment of its teaching by a division into two distinct modalities, the phallic and the phallic. the other, supplementary, situated on the feminine side and defined by a contingent logic. As a methodology, we opted for an approximate and comparative reading of the two seminars studied here, as well as for following, throughout the Lacanian teaching, the changes that occur between them in the notion of jouissance. This new formulation on jouissance makes it possible for Lacan in 1972-73 to elaborate on the feminine that he could not have at the time of the Ethics Seminar. Although, as we have also tried to highlight here, the feminine was already present in the Seminar of 1959-60, albeit in a diffuse way. It is from this articulation that we argue that it is possible to re-extract, in the author himself, what we here call the ethics of the feminine which, far from breaking with the ethics of desire proposed by him, would supplement i
