Interview with Joan Pinkvoss and Nancy R. Barcelo
Two-part recorded testimonial about the work of Gloria Anzaldua and how it has impacted Joan Pinkvoss and Nancy Rusty Barcelo.
Joan Pinkvoss co-founded Aunt Lute Books (San Francisco, CA) in 1982, a nonprofit, multicultural press committed to publishing women writers whose voices and visions are underrepresented in mainstream presses by race, ethnicity, sexuality, socio-economic background, and or age. Aunt Lute has published such acclaimed authors as Alice Walker, Audre Lorde, and Gloria Anzaldúa.
Nancy “Rusty” Barceló is the former president of Northern New Mexico College; she is a leading figure with the National Initiative for Women in Higher Education (NIWHE) and has chaired Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social (MALCS) as well as the Washington State Native American Advisory Board (NAAB). In 2004, Barceló was awarded the Ohtli Award, which is a special recognition presented by the Mexican government to Mexicans or Latinos whose work has benefited Mexicans living abroad.https://scholarworks.utrgv.edu/gloriaanzalduatestimonios/1007/thumbnail.jp
Faculty Women of Color in the Academy 6th Annual Conference Program
Our goal this year is to help women connect with one another, support each other, and leave empowered to continue to succeed in the academy. The national and local planning committees have created a dynamic program focusing on career development, leadership, personal well-being, and scholar activism. Women of color need opportunities to come together to uplift one another and build lasting professional connections that will strengthen our communities.
The conference program includes a lineup of outstanding keynote speakers including Maria Hinojosa and Brittney Cooper. The conference also continues its partnership with the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, founded by Kerry Ann Rockquemore. This year, the center offers two workshop: Solo Success: How to thrive in the academy when you’re the only _____ in your department, and Post-Tenure Pathways. Rosemarie Roberts of Connecticut College facilitates these workshops.
In response to participant requests to hear from women in leadership positions, a panel of Women of Color presidents representing diverse institutions has been organized. We are pleased to have Dr. Nancy “Rusty” Barcelo, former President of Northern New Mexico College, Dr. Cynthia Lindquist, President of Cankdeska Cikana (Little Hoop) Community College, and Pareena G. Lawrence, President of Hollins University. The panel will be facilitated by Johanna B. Maes who co-authored the book Journeys of Social Justice-Women of Color Presidents in the Academy with me.
Workshops and poster exhibits prepared and delivered by our community of scholars complement our keynotes. This year, we are pleased to offer a post-conference academic writing retreat led by Michelle Boyd of Inkwell Academic Writing Retreats
Health Hazard Evaluation Report: HETA-93-0751-2408: Providence Ambulatory Health Care Foundation, Inc., Fox Point Health Care Center; Providence, Rhode Island
In response to a request from the Providence Ambulatory Health Care Foundation, an evaluation of the ventilation system at the Fox Point Health Care Center (SIC-8011), Providence, Rhode Island was conducted. The clinic served a population considered to have a high prevalence of tuberculosis (TB). The Fox Point Center was located in a building with a Boys and Girls Club of America and a public library. Visual inspection of the ventilation system indicated that the fan coil units were rusty and dirty, and there were no filters to remove particulates. There were times when there was no airflow in the building provided by the ventilation systems. No ventilation system was noted in the laboratory. All new patients were screened for TB using a tuberculin skin test on their first visit. There was no TB testing program for workers. The author concludes that deficiencies in the ventilation systems of this facility could potentially increase the risk of TB transmission if TB patients are present. The author recommends that improvements be made in the ventilation system, and the TB control program
Who is going to save the final girl? the politics of representation in the films halloween and the silence of the lambs
Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Inglês: Estudos Linguísticos e Literários, Florianópolis, 2014Abstract: This dissertation aims at analyzing female representations in two film productions of the North American horror cinema, specifically of its subgenre slasher films, namely Halloween, directed by John Carpenter (1978) and The Silence of the Lambs, directed by Jonathan Demme (1991). My main theoretical framework is film, representation, gender, feminist and queer theories (Butler, 1990, 1993; Clover, 1989; Dika, 1985, Halberstam, 1995; Hall 1973, 1997; Mulvey, 1975, 1981; 2006; Rockoff, 2006; Weedon, 1995). My hypothesis is that the figure of the final girl, in the two films selected for analysis, is not progressive as suggested by the author Carol Clover in her work Men, Women and Chainsaws (1989). On the contrary, the two female characters are represented, in the narrative, as subjugated by the patriarchal system that has been conventionalized in the slasher subgenre. In order to provide arguments for my hypothesis, I analyze general aspects of both form and content of the two films, as well as specific scenes, using the cinematic elements of mise-en-scène, props, characterization, editing and lighting in order to obtain relevant results for my research.
Two cultures, one room: investigating language and gender in Kuwait
PhDKuwait is a gender-segregated country. Its conservative cultural ideology is evident in all
areas of social life, including the way people communicate. Men and women have to
make conscious language choices during everyday interaction. Certain aspects of Kuwaiti
conversational registers are exclusive to either men or women, which reflects not only
men’s and women’s separate socialization as children but also separate lifestyles as
adults. Kuwait’s gendered context is therefore bound to be unique and of particular
sociolinguistic interest, especially since mainstream language and gender literature has
more often focused on English-speaking cultures. Thus, there is little knowledge of Arab
gender-segregated cultures and this could possibly be due to complications that the
researcher inevitably encounters when examining a sensitive issue such as gender within
these constraints. The present research study investigates mixed interaction between
Kuwaiti men and women in online chat rooms. In this particular online context, chat
room users employ interactional strategies to negotiate the norms of heterosexual
interaction which are often non-existent in offline Kuwaiti society. A combined
framework of sociolinguistic, ethnographic methods is adopted to examine chat room
interactional choices that enable men and women to construct gendered chat room
identities as well as create a virtual online community of practice without undermining offline gender norms
The television work of Alfred Hitchcock
The thesis uses close textual analysis to study and evaluate the television work of Alfred Hitchcock. The corpus consists of the twenty shows personally directed by Hitchcock, including his appearances before and after those shows. In response to most previous writing, which tends to compare the programmes with Hitchcock’s films (often unfairly) the thesis emphasises them as products of television. Programmes are evaluated on the basis of their perceived success as television- if they harness conditions related to television production and integrate them with narrative themes or to create meaning. Hitchcock is considered to be the major creative force in each programme.
Chapter One provides a variety of important contexts including a brief history of US television of the 1950s, key literature on Hitchcock and analyses of contemporaneous programmes not directed by Hitchcock. The textual analysis chapters (2-8) consider aesthetic or thematic programme aspects. Chapter Two studies the various roles played by Hitchcock’s appearances as series host. Chapter Three considers the impact of censorship on programmes frequently dealing with murder, violence and insanity. Chapter Four analyses Hitchcock’s implementation of varieties of voice-over narration, a common device in short dramatic forms. Chapter Five studies Hitchcock’s use of point-of-view shots, particularly in relation to their role in the delivery of the narrative twist. Chapter Six considers the key Hitchcock theme of detachment from the world. Chapter Seven looks at moments from the programmes which demonstrate how aesthetic is influenced by television production conditions.
Hitchcock created a number of television masterpieces. His achievements in television are in many ways comparable in quality and consistency to his theatrical films. Even when considered in the context of other 1950s US anthology dramas, the Hitchcock-directed programmes are superior on many levels. Elements of his film style were highly suited to television production. Many of his greatest achievements embrace and harness television production conditions in their presentation strategies to create an integration of style and meaning

Thanksgiving Day, a legal holiday in Canada and the U.S., is on Monday October 14th. It was first celebrated in early colonial times in New England. After the first colonists completed their harvest in Plymouth, Mass, in 1621, Governor W. Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving & prayer, shared by all the colonists & neighbouring Indians. The custom of annually celebrating thanksgiving began after the harvest. During the American Revolution a yearly day of national thanksgiving was suggested by the Continental Congress.
In 1817 New York State became the first to adopt Thanksgiving Day as a custom. By the middle of the 19th century many other states had begun the custom. Canada started observing this day in 1879 & in 1957, Parliament made Thanksgiving a statutory holiday in Canada, always held on the 2nd monday in October.

Standing up for his rights
A woman got on a crowded bus and held tightly to
a strap. A man seated in front of her started to rise,
whereupon the woman pushed him back into his
Seat
“Please don’t get up for me. I’m a liberated woman
and I can stand,” she said with a smile.
The man tried again and again, and the woman
refused to let him up each time.
Finally on his fifth try, the man said firmly, “You
must let me up, madam. I’ve already gone 10 blocks
past my home.”

The Magrath Stinger Tadpoles faced off
against the Picture Butte Tadpoles. The
Stingers were full of steam and the scoring
spree started off with Chase Hofer & Devin
Millward getting one goal each, they both got
two goals each for the Stingers!
Taylor Evans put the "wrap around" move on
the other teams's goalie & came out the victor!
Cody Foggin followed with one goal with an
assist pass from Robbie Karren.
Tyson Hudson played a great game with two
goals both on fast paced breakaway. Carson
Foggin played a tough face off center position
and passed the puck to the team.
Matt McClenan kept the puck out of our end
and got the puck off to his teammates.
Doran Johnson got a 1st time goal and
brought the puck across the line and got his
goal! Tyler Hansen passed and kept the other
team on their toes.
Some awesome goalie work by Taylor Evans
and Nigel Atwood. One goal attempt by Picture
Butte put Nigel on the run out of the crease &
some pressure sent him scrambling back to the
net to make the save! Nigel made the 11th goal
and this ended the game 11-4. Way to go team!
