Brand Borges: A Computer-Assisted Analysis of the Works of Jorge Luis Borges (1923-1955)
There is a particular idea about the Argentine author, Jorge Luis Borges, that has proliferated over time and has continued to maintain popularity in both the scholarly literature and in popular culture until the present. The general sentiment of this idea—referred to as “Brand Borges” in this dissertation—presumes that Borges is disconnected from Argentina and from reality in general. He is deemed to be more concerned with that which is not real, and when he does engage with the real world, he is thought to be more focused on international affairs rather than the events and traditions of his own country.
This study uses a variety of digital tools, such as methods of computer-assisted text analysis and those developed in geographic information systems, to analyze the first thirteen major works of Borges and challenge the idea of Brand Borges. By interpreting the results of digital analyses of Borges’s oeuvre, and assessing the people, places, and other elements explicitly mentioned, it is argued that he in fact does appear to be connected to both reality and Argentina.
For that which is implicit in Borges’s work, this dissertation then uses traditional methods of literary interpretation to examine a selection of texts and reveal that even when a story is set in a foreign land with international characters, it is often described in such a way as to relate the events, setting, or characters back to Argentina and reality

Gas injection consolidation of miniature natural fiber beams
The internal structure of natural fiber composites can be manipulated by controlling the spatial distribution of fiber orientation and internal chemical and thermodynamic conditions during their consolidation. Objects highly tailored to specific service demands may thereby be produced. Techniques to form miniature structural beams from oriented hemp and random wood fiber networks with phenol formaldehyde (PF) adhesive have been explored. Beams have been consolidated in a specially developed rectangular gas injection pressing system using ammonia as a softening agent and an ester as a low-temperature adhesive catalyst. A range of natural fiber and adhesive types for use in producing the small composite beams are reviewed and hemp and wood fibers selected. Anatomical, tensile strength, and bonding characteristics of hemp fibers are explored. Adhesion kinetics of PF adhesive with both individual hemp strands and fiber networks in the presence of methyl formate at 50°C was also studied. Methyl formate was found to hasten the rate of strength development and final network strength by 51% and 22% respectively. The presence of waxy epidermal surfaces on hemp fibers has been found to limit strength of PF adhesive-to-fiber bonds to approximately 1 .OMPa, while opposing surfaces bond well (4.5MPa). The effect of testing temperature on the strength of partially cured PF resin-to-wood bonds was investigated to explore the possibility of reducing hot pressing time in conventional hot pressing processes of wood-based composite manufacturing and also to take advantage of temperature control that may be affected in sealed pressing methods. The shear strength of partially cured PF-to-wood bonds was found to be significantly increased by reducing temperature. This temperature effect was greatest at the beginning of bond formation and progressively decreased to zero with increasing isothermal cure. Chemicals have been selected to sequentially stimulate fiber softening (anhydrous ammonia) and adhesion (methyl formate) in the sealed pressing system under near-ambient temperature conditions. It was found that density gradients can be created within beams by injecting ammonia from one platen. Stress analysis of a density graded beam showed that such a beam performs more efficiently than homogeneous beams of the same weight
Patient-reported understanding and dentist-reported management of periodontal diseases:A survey: Do you know what gum disease is?
Introduction Mild-to-moderate gingivitis is treatable by effective toothbrushing with appropriate over-the-counter oral health care products; however, rates remain high.Aim To determine patient knowledge of gingivitis and dentists' views on management. Methods Surveys were completed by dentists and dental hospital patients. Results In total, 224 patients and 50 dentists participated. Clinical health, gingivitis, or periodontitis was detected in 2%, 33% and 56% of patients, respectively; 32% reported never suffering gingival bleeding. Moreover, 74% of patients reported gingival health as very important but only 53.7% with gingivitis occasionally/often were moderately-extremely worried about their symptoms. More than 50% of patients knew gingivitis causes poor oral health but <20% knew it elevated risks of other systemic conditions. Patients thought education on risks associated with poor oral health and product recommendations were most likely, and daily reminders least likely, to improve compliance with oral health advice (OHA). Also, 40% of dentists thought their patients were relatively unaware of the importance of gingival health, 76.9% of their patient-base had gingivitis, and 96% give OHA to these patients but only 30% thought this effected improvement. The most useful tools for improving oral health were better patient knowledge of the consequences and one-to-one instruction. Conclusion Patients struggle to attain oral health following OHA. Education about gingivitis-associated risks might improve OHA compliance
A nationless state? Malta, national identity and the EU
This article discusses the relationship of Malta with the European Union in the light of Malta's status as an example of a 'nationless state'. The article first develops the relevance of this under-researched concept by locating it within the discussion of postcolonial, small island nationalism. It then provides a historical critique of the emergence of the Maltese nationless state and of its various integrationist attempts with France, Italy, Britain and, most recently, the EU. Finally, the article explores the possible dialectics of an emerging nationalism with an entrenched two-party political system and its totalising discourse.PT: J; CR: *UNICE, 2002, COMM MALT 2002 REP C, P1 ANCKAR D, 1995, SCANDINAVIAN POLITIC, V18, P220 ANDERSON B, 1983, IMAGINED COMMUNITIES BALDACCHINIO G, 1998, ASIA PACIFIC VIEWPOI, V39, P267 BALDACCHINO G, 1989, HYPHEN MALTA, V6, P98 BALDACCHINO G, 2000, LESSONS POLITICAL EC BARTMANN B, 2002, QUEST SOVEREIGNTY UN BEETHAM D, 1984, IDEA MODERN STATE, P209 BOISSEVAIN J, 1974, FRIENDS FRIENDS NETW BUTTIGIEG J, 1997, J FACULTY EC MANAGEM, V8, P53 CHRISTIANSEN T, 1996, PUBLIUS J FEDERALISM, V26, P93 COHEN R, 1987, POLITICS DEV SECURIT, P212 CONNOR AW, 1994, ETHNONATIONALISM QUE, P208 DUCHACEK IV, 1988, PUBLIUS J FEDERALISM, V18 ERIKSEN TH, 1992, US THEM MODERN SOC E, P24 ERIKSEN TH, 1993, ETHNICITY NATL, P99 FALZON MA, 2001, BANK VALLETTA REV MA, V24, P73 FRENDO H, 1972, BIRTH PANGS NATION M FRENDO H, 1988, BRIT COLONIAL EXPERI, P210 GELLNER E, 1964, THOUGHT CHANGE, P169 GELLNER E, 1983, NATIONS NATL GOFFMAN AE, 1961, ASYLUMS GOTTLIEB G, 1994, FOREIGN AFF, V73, P100 GRILLO R, 1980, NATION STATE EUROPE, P1 HACHE JD, 1998, COMPETING STRATEGIES, P60 HIRCZY W, 1995, EUROPEAN J POLITICAL, V27, P258 HOEFTE R, 1991, EUROPE CARIBBEAN, P71 HOUBERT J, 1985, ROUND TABLE, V74, P146 HOUBERT J, 1992, J MOD AFR STUD, V30, P465 HUNTINGTON SP, 1996, CLASH CIVILIZATIONS, P137 KELLAS JG, 1991, POLITICS NATL ETHNIC KING R, 1999, SMALL WORLDS GLOBAL, P3 LAFFAN B, 1997, EUROPEAN INTEGRATION, V1 LAITIN DD, 1997, POLIT SOC, V25, P277 MILES WFS, 1985, ELECTRIONS ETHNICITY MITCHELL J, 2001, AMBIVALENT EUROPEANS NAIPAUL VS, 1972, OVERCROWDED BARRACOO, P254 PIROTTA GA, 1997, MALTA PUBLIC SERVICE PIROTTA J, 1987, FORTRESS COLONY FINA, V1 PREMDAS R, 1990, SECESSIONIST MOVEMEN, P12 SCHAFFER AB, 1975, DEV POLICY SMALL COU, P25 SCHLESINGER P, 1994, NATIONALISM, P316 STREETEN PP, 1993, WORLD DEV, V21, P201 SULTANA RG, 1994, MALTESE SOC SOCIOLOG WARNES AM, 1998, INT J POPULATION GEO, V4, P113 WEALE D, 1992, ISLAND J, V8, P81 WINCHESTER S, 1985, OUTPOSTS JOURNEYS SU ZAMMIT EL, 1984, COLONIAL INHERITANCE, P41; NR: 48; TC: 3; J9: WEST EUR POLIT; PG: 16; GA: 612ZESource type: Electronic(1
Preliminary Studies on Chitin Decomposition in Lake Erie Sediments
Author Institution: Department of Microbiology, Ohio State UniversityEnrichment studies, biproduct analyses, and slides coated with chitin were employed to examine chitin decomposition in Lake Erie sediments and the watersediment interface. Enumeration studies of sediment indicated the presence of approximately 106 ml1 heterotrophic bacteria of which approximately 10% (105 ml1) displayed chitinolytic ability. Chitin-coated slides buried in a mud jar gave preliminary evidence of a succession of microorganisms active in chitin degradation in both the aerobic and anaerobic zones of the sediment column. Enrichment studies of frozen core sections showed the potential activity of microorganisms in the sediments to degrade chitin with the release of NH3. Tests for release of the subunit of chitin, N-acetylglucosamine, from enriched sediments were not successful
Cult: A Composite Novel
Cult (redacted)
The first component of the thesis is a composite novel called Cult which falls into two parts with seven narratives in each. Part 1 tracks the protagonist, Ellen, from her first involvement with the cult through to her eventually leaving it. Although fiction, the first half of the book answers the kinds of questions the author is asked when people discover that she was once a sannyasin (a follower of the guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh). While the experiences of meditation, group therapy and communal living are all faithfully rendered within the stories, the need for strong characters, narrative drive and a lightness of touch takes precedence.
Part 2 picks up Ellen’s story some twenty or so years later and explores what becomes of her in middle age. It also looks at other groups in society, such as academia, the law and the internet dating community which each have their own jargon, hierarchies, rituals and rules but are not considered to be cults.
The book examines the question raised in the Epigraph, ‘how do we be together when we feel so alone’ with a focus on relationships other than the familial and the romantic.
Collisions, Chasms and Connections: a Performative Exploration of the Composite Novel Form
The second part of the thesis is both a critical and creative response to three contemporary American books: Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout; A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan; and Legend of a Suicide by David Vann. The critical element comprises a close reading of the three books; a chronological reconstruction of their overarching storylines; and a consideration of what their authors have said about writing the books. It concludes that, in the composite novel, the simultaneous presentation of multiple views and storylines operate much like a 3D image to give the impression of depth to the characters and situations rendered. The creative element of the essay is a playful and personal response to the texts
Meta-analyses identify 13 loci associated with age at menopause and highlight DNA repair and immune pathways
To newly identify loci for age at natural menopause, we carried out a meta-analysis of 22 genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in 38,968 women of European descent, with replication in up to 14,435 women. In addition to four known loci, we identified 13 loci newly associated with age at natural menopause (at P < 5 × 10(-8)). Candidate genes located at these newly associated loci include genes implicated in DNA repair (EXO1, HELQ, UIMC1, FAM175A, FANCI, TLK1, POLG and PRIM1) and immune function (IL11, NLRP11 and PRRC2A (also known as BAT2)). Gene-set enrichment pathway analyses using the full GWAS data set identified exoDNase, NF-κB signaling and mitochondrial dysfunction as biological processes related to timing of menopause
Dynamic Manipulation of Spatial Weights Using Web Services
Spatial analytical tools are mostly provided in a desktop environment, which tends to restrict user access to the tools. This project intends to exploit up-to-date web technologies to extend user accessibility to spatial analytic tools. The first step is to develop web services for widely used spatial analysis such as spatial weights manipulation and provide easy-to-use web-based user interface to the services. Users can create, transform, and convert spatial weights for their data sets on web browsers without installing any specialized software.
