Rob Ball is interested in materiality, temporality and process. Working predominantly with tintype, Ball constructs darkrooms in-situ, ensuring photographic plates are both created and developed in the location depicted. Ball’s current practice centers on the physical nature of making a tintype image and the experience this creates for the artist, sitter and viewer. Working often as an itinerant, Ball engages with the history of the medium and its repeated obsolescence to generate new creative engagement and thinking

Between around 1880 and World War II, Coney Island was the largest amusement area in the United States attracting several million visitors each year. At its height, three enormous amusement parks – Luna Park, Dreamland, and Steeplechase Park – competed for visitors with the latest thrills and spills. Consequently Coney Island became a focus for the latest technological innovation, with electric lights, roller coasters, and even baby incubators appearing there in the 1900s.
Rob Ball explores Coney Island to tell a story of a resort rich in history and with a special cultural significance for many New Yorkers. Ball articulates this historical context through the use of the handmade and unpredictable tintype process, once widely used in Coney Island. This is balanced by his colour work documenting the area’s current diversity and popularity, with images made during the busy summer period.
For Ball, this is part of long-term photographic project engaging with the history of coastal resorts and their cyclical rise and fall in popularity. It is also a sequel to his previous book, Dreamlands, that looked at the popular amusement park in Margate. As with Margate, Coney Island in Brooklyn has undergone a period of repair after years of neglect and this is reflected in the work

He then earned his Master of Divinity at Asbury Seminary. Rob has served as pastor of Upland United Methodist Church the past 12 years. He married his wife Tammy (“Z”) 30 years ago. Stephen Clarke’s contribution: exhibition development; twenty black&white photographic prints of the seaside resorts of Blackpool and Rhyl; display of Stephen Clarke’s photozine titled Blackpool 1980s - 1990s (2023) published by Café Royal Books; text panel; short article for Canterbury Christ Church University blog titled Change Always Given: Holidays and Slot Machines (posted 4 April, 2023); presentation of photographic work to an audience online with Alan Meades and Rob Ball (19 April 2023); attendance at public ‘meet the photographer’ event at Daphne Oram Gallery, Canterbury Christ Church University (22 April 2023). The photozine Blackpool 1980s - 1990s (2023: CRB) was available for sale in the University Bookshop.An exhibition looking at the amusement arcade in British popular culture. It was proposed by Dr Alan Meades (Canterbury Christ Church University), author of a history of the British arcade from the 1800s to the present: Arcade Britannia (2022, MIT Press). The exhibition was developed by Alan Meades, Rob Ball (Canterbury Christ Church University) and Stephen Clarke. Clarke contributed twenty black&white photographs taken in the 1980s and 1990s of the seaside resorts of Blackpool and Rhyl. These photographs are part of his ongoing project about the British seaside. Many of the prints included were being exhibited for the first time; some works had been previously published by Café Royal Books
BALL TRACKING IN FOOTBALL
No full textThis study outines the evaluation of VICON TRACKER software in tracking a ball in a large test area. A 22 camera VICON system and VICON Tracker software was used to track a soccer ball both indoor (22 m x 12 m) and outdoor (22 m x 28 m). Different ball marker setups were evaluated for accuracy and percentage data capture manipulating the number and type of reflective markers, as well as software settings, ands whether the system identified the centre of the ball. TRACKER achieved greater than 90% data capture percentage using the half dome markers or nine flat marker setups. Importantly a pre-test setup of the ball object and a 200 Hz (as opposed to 100 Hz) sample rate was needed. The ball centre was also captured by the software. Future work will examine if this system can perform in larger spaces and with multiple players in the area
