Podcast With Oleg Benesch - Co-Author Of "Japan's Castles Citadels Of Modernity In War And Peace"
We caught up with Oleg Benesch to talk about his new book "Japan's Castles: Citadels of Modernity in War and Peace," co-authored with Ran Zwigenberg.
In the podcast Dr Benesch talks about what motivated them to write a book about castles that is not military history; writing a book with another author who lives in another part of the world; the meaning of modernity; the ambiguous relationship between history and heritage; and why issues of “space” matter in history
OLEG NEGRUȚA’S COMPOSITIONAL VISION ON NICCOLÓ PAGANINI’S CAPRICE No. 24
Among the musical works dedicated by the composer Oleg Negruţa to the wind instruments is his Fantasy on a Theme by Paganini for piano and clarinet. Borrowing from the great violinist’s form and thematism, the author blended some neoclassical elements with others, typical of the jazz manner, featuring to the famous capriccio another character than the original one. In addition, combining three different terms – fantasy, capriccio and theme with variations – Oleg Negruța signed a piece whose form, structure and content are dictated rather by the composer’s free fantasy than by some traditional techniques. This article is proposed to highlight some aspects in order to demonstrate the authenticity of the author’s compositional vision on Paganini’s theme

Works of Oleg Pavlov in Context of Literary Reflection: A Review of Research
This article addresses the issue of literary reflection on the artistic legacy of contemporary Russian writer Oleg Pavlov. The study is based on critical and journalistic articles, literary analyses of the author’s works, and selected literary pieces. It presents an attempt at a systematic description, generalization, and analysis of Oleg Pavlov’s poetics. For the first time, the article proposes a periodization of the writer’s oeuvre. The author identifies and interprets the classical stages of Pavlov’s creative biography — early (“biographical”), mature (“critical-journalistic”), and late (“reflective”). It is established that literary criticism has offered a mixed assessment of the writer’s artistic mastery, presenting contradictory judgments ranging from condescending and tolerant to sharp and accusatory. On one hand, his prose is associated with the classical literary tradition; on the other hand, a cliché of the “gloomy” writer has emerged. The article highlights a sustained interest in Oleg Pavlov’s works within academic literary studies, identifying mythopoetic, philosophical, historical-cultural, and linguistic research directions. The author concludes that current philological reflection opens up research perspectives in the study of Pavlov’s poetics as a representative of “new realism” in contemporary Russian literature
The Interplay between National Security and Freedom of Expression Online in the Post-Soviet Countries
For his study, the researcher selected a group of post-Soviet countries. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the countries morphed into quite different sovereign states, with different centres of global attractions and alliances. In the present work the author tested his hypothesis that regardless of individual historical paths − and despite differences in evolving political and institutional regimes − there exists a commonality of Internet regulation practices that is shared by most of the countries in question. To set the stage, this work presents the research design and methodology before moving on to describe the context in the post-Soviet region. Next, the work takes a detour from the analysis of regional characteristics to introduce the definitions of national security, terrorism, extremism and the interplay of these issues with the principle of freedom of expression. The research further explores the way emerging Internet technologies changed the playing field when it comes to the expression of views that are legally acceptable, however, potentially could be causing a threat to national security. The author then outlines the existing good practices, drawing mostly upon the experiences of the ‘old’ democracies, before moving on to explore case studies conducted in the post-Soviet space. The scope of legislative interventions in the countries of the region is examined through the lens of the legitimisation of disputable practices of curtailing free online expression and the methods employed. It should be noted that the hypothesis involving the commonality of legislative interventions is only partially corroborated. Still, the author identified a number of initiatives that legislators of the countries under scrutiny could implement to align their respective legislature with the best practices of online regulation, based on the premises of legality, legitimacy, and proportionality as regards restrictions to freedom of expression
Kedrovyi Sor : la vie quotidienne dans un camp du goulag à l'époque stalinienne
Kedrovyi Sor: daily life in a Gulag camp during the Stalinist period, Oleg Azarov.
Our knowledge of the Soviet concentration camp universe is beginning to be nourished by direct access to archives. The author, a young Russian scholar, has been able to work on a rich collection of documents concerning the camp of Kedrovyi Sor, in the Pečora bassin. Through his study of the camp's administrative structure, its financial operation and its economic activities, and through an analysis of the inmates and their living conditions, he provides, almost in the raw, a concrete and precise description of the daily functioning of a Stalinist camp from the early 1930s to the 1950s.Azarov Oleg, Laurent Natacha. THE VARIATION OF GENOME SITES ASSOCIATED WITH SEVERE COVID-19 ACROSS POPULATIONS: THE WORLDWIDE AND NATIONAL PATTERNS
SUMMARY Background The knowledge of clinically relevant markers distribution might become a useful tool in COVID-19 therapy using personalized approach in the lack of unified recommendations for COVID-19 patients management during pandemic. We aimed to identify the frequencies and distribution patterns of rs11385942 and rs657152 polymorphic markers, associated with severe COVID-19, among populations of the world, as well at the national level within Russia. The study was also dedicated to reveal whether population frequencies of both polymorphic markers are associated with COVID-19 cases, recovery and death rates. Methods We genotyped 1883 samples from 91 ethnic populations from Russia and neighboring countries by rs11385942 and rs657152 markers. Local populations which were geographically close and genetically similar were pooled into 28 larger groups. In the similar way we compiled a dataset on the other regions of the globe using genotypes extracted or imputed from the available datasets (32 populations worldwide). The differences in alleles frequencies between groups were estimated and the frequency distribution geographic maps have been constructed. We run the correlation analysis of both markers frequencies in various populations with the COVID-19 epidemiological data on the same populations. Findings The cartographic analysis revealed that distribution of rs11385942 follows the West Eurasian pattern: it is frequent in Europeans, West Asians, and particularly in South Asians but rare or absent in all other parts of the globe. Notably, there is no abrupt changes in frequency across Eurasia but the clinal variation instead. The distribution of rs657152 is more homogeneous. Higher population frequencies of both risk alleles correlated positively with the death rate. For the rs11385942 we can state the tendency only (r=0,13, p=0.65), while for rs657152 the correlation was significantly high (r=0,59, p=0,02). These reasonable correlations were obtained on the Russian dataset, but not on the world dataset. Interpretation Using epidemiological statistics on Russia and neighboring countries we revealed the evident correlation of the risk alleles frequencies with the death rate from COVID-19. The lack of such correlations at the world level should be attributed to the differences in the ways epidemiological data have been counted in different countries. So that, we believe that genetic differences between populations make small but real contribution into the heterogeneity of the pandemic worldwide. New studies on the correlations between COVID-19 recovery/mortality rates and population’s gene pool are urgently needed
Contemporary human's problems in Oleg Bogayev's dramas
Last two decades of Russian dramaturgy extremely shows the crisis of values that affected the generations living at the interphase between the two epochs. One of the authors who was particularly sensitive to contemporary humans' situation was Oleg Bogayev. He was interested in disintegration of personality, emotional coldness and lack of interpersonal ties. In his dramas, Bogayev presents a very pessimistic vision of the reality enriching it by a fairytale - like fictional universe. By using esthetics of postmodernism, the dramatist devises reflections on being alone in the crowd, a feeling of alienation and a lack of wider interpersonal relations. The author is also interested in the state of culture and art, that have been knocked off the pedestal of uniqueness and are no longer playing the role of higher values source. This article is an attempt of analysis of authors work in the context of problems that contemporary human is facing
