    Revenge of a Jinn

    No full text
Assalamu Alaikum, this tale I heard from my grandfather. When he first came to this village [toba], it was in a serene forest which did not contain any sign of a nearby human settlement and visibility was very limited. This was in sharp contrast to today's conditions with much water shortage when people often travel for miles to collect drinking water. Over time, as the population increased, the canal from which people used to collect water also slowly changed its course. We used to go there collect water and this is how our life was passing by. There was another village close to our village and its people are very kind and polite. People used to come and go back and forth between the village for basic trade. I made a friend there named Kareem Baksh a very good and hospitable person and we used to go together to collect firewood in the forest spending the whole day together. One day, Kareem Baksh's wife got very sick and we became worried. We took her to the village healer for help. The local doctor checked her up but he could not find any disease in her that he could treat. He advised us to take her to the Peer Murshid so that he could perform rituals on her and she would recover. However, with time, the condition of my friend's wife worsened even more. We returned home, took our camels and went towards the Peer. It was a long journey, it took us two days to get there and to return. Finally, we came back with the Peer Sahib who looked at her and after a little started performing some rituals. He sensed someone (some jinns) in her and started talking to them. He asked them what was going on. The jinns replied: "She went to canal to wash clothes and there she has killed (accidentally) our children." Then Peer said: "But she cannot see." They replied: "This is not our fault." So, after performing some more rituals the peer went back and a few days later, my friend's wife passed away.2.9.12.

Libraries world over have always been recognised as an important social institution which helps in spreading the literacy and inculcating the reading habits among large section of population. Governments world over were sensitive enough to realise this very mission of the libraries and Indian Government have never been lacking behind to understand this aspect. Historically speaking, India has long and rich traditional in education, arts, culture and scientific research. The Seventh Plan Working Report of the Planning Commission states that “ No community, institution or organization is considered complete without a good library services. The gradual spread of the concept of democracy of socialist pattern of society, the extension of education, the intensification of research activities , the rapid increase in the production of recorded knowledge both in print and non print forms, and vast innovations in information and communication technology have led to the expression of libraries, information centres and systems as well as development of their services.” The significant slogan of the Hon’ble Union Minister of Tourism and Culture, Shri Jagmohan that “THE NATION THAT READS, THE NATION THAT LEADS” speaks itself about the mind set of the Government and importance given to the libraries. Recognising the importance of the libraries, the Government of India and different State Governments have been formulating policies and bringing out reports on various issues concerning the libraries. There has been a persistent demand from the policy planners and library professionals that all the important Reports of the Government of India should be brought out at one place so that it becomes easy for them to refer and look to the focus and attention given by the Government in Library sector. This document is an attempt to compile some of the Reports of the Government of India and also from different States which are presently available in printed and mimeograph form for the pre and post independent India at Central Secretariat Library. There are many more such documents which were brought out by the Government from time to time and CSL intends to compile them in continuation to this venture and update the same for posterity. In addition to publishing them in full, an attempt has been made to provide a brief summary of each Report in a systematic manner which reflects the importance of the document

This paper attempts to examine the factors affecting cotton production in Multan region using primary source of data. A sample of 60 small farmers, 25 medium and 15 large farmers was randomly selected from two Tehsils namely Multan and Shujabad of district Multan. The Cobb-Douglas Production Function is employed to assess the effects of various inputs like cultivation, seed and sowing, irrigation, fertilizer, plant protection, inter-culturing / hoeing and labour cost on cotton yield. The results depicted that seed, fertilizer and irrigation were found scarce commodity for all category of farmers in district Multan. The Cobb-Douglas Production Function results revealed that the coefficients for cultivation (0.113) and seed (0.103) were found statistically significant at 1 percent level. The Cost-Benefit Ratio for the large farmers was found higher (1.41) than that of small (1.22) and medium (1.24) farmers. There is a dire need to ensure the availability of these scarce inputs by both public and private sectors as these inputs were major requirement of the cotton crop.Cotton; Cobb- Douglas Production Function; Cost Benefit Ratio; Marginal Value Product; Allocate Efficiency of Critical Inputs; Multan District; Pakistan

This study critically analyses the teaching practices of English language in the context of Lasbela district, the southern district of Balochistan, a province of Pakistan. The survey method was applied to collect data through classroom observation, Checklist and interview protocol from randomly selected secondary public schools in Lasbela district were applied. The research demonstrated that Translation Method of Teaching was adopted instead of Direct Method of Teaching. It also revealed that the manner of teaching the English Language was similar to the teaching of other subjects, such as Pakistan Studies, General Science. This teaching approach is teacher-centred and students are not provided with the opportunity of developing language skills through practice in classrooms. This research also identif ies that the factors responsible for this approach of teaching the English language are lack of capacity building programs/courses for language teachers, overcrowded classrooms, teachers’ workload, poor infrastructure, examination system and ineff icient monitoring mechanism. This study recommends that teachers of English language must be trained accordingly prior to embarking on the language teaching profession

Ghayat al-amani and the life and times of al-Hadi Yahya b. al-Husayn: an introduction, newly edited text and translation with detailed annotation

The thesis is anchored upon a text extracted from an important 11th / 17th century Yemeni historical work. This text deals primarily with al-Hādī ilā 'I-Haqq, the founder of the Zaydī Imamate in the Yemen that lasted well over a thousand years. AI-Hādīs imamate, of considerable significance in itself, also coincides with one of the most turbulent periods of early Yemeni mediaeval history. The- edited Arabic text, with its accompanying apparatus criticus. Is to be found at the opposite end of this volume. The Introduction considers various aspects of Imam al-Hadī’s life, religious ideas and aspirations and matters directly connected with the edited text and the work of which it forms a part. Among the most important subjects discussed are the MSS used in the production of the edited text, the problem concerning the authorship of Ghāyat al-amānī and the relationship of the latter work to Anbā' al-zaman. A short biography of al-Hādī is provided, together with a treatment of the historical background to ai-Hādīs imamate. The introduction also describes the editorial method followed with regard to the text, and certain key personal names and toponyms are dealt with there. The method employed by the author of the Ghāyat is to record the events of any one year by Itself. I have translated one year at a time and then followed it by the annotations appertaining to it. It is hoped that by means of these annotations. (some of which through necessity are quite detailed ), the text will be better understood. The numerous personages, tribal names and toponyms are considered, as well as problems concerning points of chronology and various matters of historical and religious significance. Specific comment is made upon certain interesting terms or any unusual or striking vocabulary. The thesis concludes with maps, genealogical tables and a comprehensive bibliography

    Strategic management of population programs

    Get PDF
Formal strategic planning and management appear to contribute to organizational effectiveness. The author surveys the literature on strategic management in private/for-profit organizations and applies lessons from that literature to population programs. Few would argue that population programs would not benefit from strategic planning and management, but it would be inadvisable to initiate the process when the organization is faced with a short-term crisis; during or immediately before a change in leadership; or when implementation is unlikely. Public sector programs seem to have the latitude to manage strategically. Models available for adoption include life-cycle models, strategic issues management, stakeholder analysis, and portfolio analysis. The model selected may be a function of: (1) who will use it (life-cycle/evolutionary models may be well-suited to the planning needs of donors); (2) the presence of challenges to the survival of the program or to key components of it (stakeholder analysis would find ready application in those circumstances); and (3) the relative success and stability of the program (portfolio analysis may help a program balance its activities in a stable environment whereas strategic issues management is useful in responding to a dynamic environment.) It is important to marshall top-level support, designatewho will do the leg work, analyze the organization's history and current situation, assess internal strengths and weaknesses and external threats and opportunities, and summarize critical issues facing the program. Then a strategy may be developed. Among the available approaches are: (1) scenario developments (useful for a program that senses a need to change its approach to clients); (2) critical issues analysis (useful for refining successful programs); and (3) a goal approach (useful for programs with diffuse, ill-defined objectives). There are no short-cuts, it is argued. A strategic plan typically contains: (1) a mission statement that describes the social need to be addressed, what is unique about the organization, what its values are, and who the principal stakeholders are; (2) a statement of the population to be served and goals for service delivery and quality standards; (3) a service delivery strategy; (4) a financial strategy; (5) a marketing strategy; and (6) support strategies. Most organizations will find that there is no ideal structure - all require tradeoffs - and that attention should focus on eliminating patently dysfunctional aspects of the structure.Health Monitoring&Evaluation,ICT Policy and Strategies,Agricultural Knowledge&Information Systems,Educational Sciences,Enterprise Development&Reform
