Dr. David Baker is the author of four chapbooks and four full-length collections of poetry. “Laws of the Land”, “Haunts”, “Sweet Home Saturday Night”, published by the University of Arkansas 1991, and forthcoming from that same press “After the Reunion”. He is a professor of English at Denison University and holds a PhD in English from the University of Utah. He’s won numerous honors, including the Society of Midland Office Book of the Year Award, 1992. A Pushcart Prize, he was named Poet of the Year by the Ohio Poetry Association, has been a Bradlow Fellow, has held an NEA fellowship and other honors. The discussion opens with David reading his poem "Murder". Stan and David talk about the mechanics of the poem and the event it portrays and the language and what it does to convey what is happening and what matters most in that piece. They go on to touch on to talk about the American practice of not thinking in poetry, or a fear of critical thought, that it would somehow ruin the poetry altogether. The conversation moves to how the poems come through for Dr. Baker as lyrics and their connection to his history and experience with music. This segues into David discussing how he writes with reader in mind due to performing with a guitar and having to adjust to the mood of the audience; more to his point, "…the poem isn't complete without the reader." David talks about his editing process and how his wife is integral to the improvement of his work. He knows a piece is finished only when it has an "unassailable shape" to it. The discussion closes with David talking about the origin and driving force for the creation of "After the Reunion".Archived web conten

Oral history interview with Illinois State Normal University alum David Baker, Class of 1978. The interview was conducted on October 29, 1983 by Nancy Dattilo, then a member of the Student Alumni Council. Baker reminisces about the casual yet academically rigorous atmosphere of ISU, highlighting events like the Rites of Spring music concert. Regarding university officials, he mentions the positive impact of President Lloyd Watkins and recalls influential professors from the Biology Department, such as Dr. Brockman and Eleanor Dilks. Comparing the educational experience, Baker suggests that while academics may be equally or more challenging in the early 1980s, there might have been more outside funding for student expenses during his time. According to Baker, extracurricular activities like intramural sports and attending basketball and football games were popular among students, along with visits to Capen Cinema. Baker provides insights into the cost of living in ’78 and describes the typical mode of dress for classes and church. The most important national event he remembers is the 1973-74 oil embargo. Baker notes the supportive relationship between the towns of Bloomington-Normal and the university and recalls the campus\u27s attitude toward alcohol, particularly considering the lower drinking age at the time. Fond memories of ISU include its friendly atmosphere and the ability to form connections despite its size. Baker also observes significant physical and academic changes to the campus since his graduation, expressing positivity toward its growth and development.https://ir.library.illinoisstate.edu/aoh/1028/thumbnail.jp

The Antarctic Deep Freeze oral history project was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation and supported by the Antarctic Deep Freeze Association. The original paper copies and unaltered tapes have been deposited in the library of the National Science Foundation.Newly commissioned Ensign David Baker, an experienced winter mountaineer, eagerly volunteered for Antarctica, even when assigned to be a parachuting dogsled driver (for never-used rescue service). After hurried training in both dog handling and parachuting, he became the youngest officer to winter over at McMurdo during Deep Freeze I. He conducted survival training for South Pole construction teams, including tent-camping with full polar equipment and dog sleds, one of the dogs' few uses in this mechanized expedition. He was also the camp's communications officer. For Baker, steeped in polar history, it was a thrilling, life-changing experience to live in the shadow of the heroes of the polar continent.National Science FoundationAntarctic Deep Freeze Associatio
